Lorne Michaels Runs Both Shows That Split Shane Gillis

Lorne Michaels executive-produces both Saturday Night Live and SNL UK, which used an off-week to roast Shane Gillis after his Oct. 10 gym monologue.

Shane Gillis told NBC’s Oct. 10 audience that women at the gym “dressed like whores now.” The clip sat on the official Saturday Night Live account while New York stayed off the air until Halloween.

On Oct. 17, SNL UK put his photo on Weekend Update and used a word NBC still cannot broadcast. Lorne Michaels executive-produces both shows.

What Shane Gillis Said on Oct. 10

Gillis was hosting for the third time, Season 52 Episode 3, with Rosalía as musical guest. The seven-minute stand-up monologue ran through hiking, a Bud Light spot, a sauna insult from Theo Von, and two older sisters. The gym turn is the line that left the building.

“I haven’t been to the gym in so long. I didn’t know women just dressed like whores now,” he said, according to the on-air transcript. He kept going: neon shorts “like artificial-bait colored,” wrinkles that “combine at the butthole,” and a warning not to look because “they are filming.” He said he was already in the background of “like ten TikToks.”

That is the bit, not a stray word. He framed it as a fat guy walking into a New York gym, then described women’s clothes as bait and treated looking as the forbidden move. Dan Levy, who hosted the show in 2021, answered on Instagram: “Women wearing short shorts at the gym does not make them whores. It makes the men calling them ‘whores’ misogynists.”

Maren Morris posted a gym video captioned as her being a whore at the gym. Jessica Valenti, the writer who publishes the Abortion, Every Day newsletter, tied the language to rape culture and asked what else denigrating women as bait is supposed to be. The argument on the official clip slid, fast, into a fight about whose offense counts, which is how these things travel now.

NBC’s own account posted the monologue the night it aired and left it up.

Gillis also dropped an unscripted f-bomb in a Green Eggs and Ham sketch with Andrew Dismukes and Mikey Day, then told the room, “Sorry about earlier.” That slip is a broadcast problem. The gym line was written, rehearsed, and kept.

London Used a Word NBC Still Bans

SNL UK airs live at 10 p.m. on Sky One. The Oct. 17 episode, hosted by James Norton with musical guest The Streets, was the first week New York was dark after Gillis. Weekend Update co-host Ania Magliano opened on a Munich Oktoberfest ride that handed women cycling shorts to stop upskirting. Then Gillis’s monologue photo landed over her shoulder.

Wearing the gym shorts will protect women from being upskirted, but it does make them vulnerable to something much worse. Last week on SNL, comedian Shane Gillis also caused controversy by dropping the f-bomb. Oh Shane, you’re not allowed to say that, you stupid fucking cunt.

Ania Magliano, Weekend Update co-host, SNL UK

The second punch is the license. Sky has rated 15 for profane language, plus sexual jokes and satirical racial language, and the London show runs after 10 p.m. NBC still plays by live-network rules, which is why Gillis’s f-bomb was a mistake and Magliano’s closer was the gag. James Austin Johnson also crossed the ocean that night as Donald Trump, a cameo that only existed because the U.S. show was off.

This is the first time the two Saturday Night Lives have talked trash on air. It is not a rogue British copy. It is the same franchise, on a week 30 Rock had no live slot, using a word the original still treats as an emergency.

Lorne Michaels Signs Both Payrolls

Saturday Night Live UK premiered March 21, 2026, with Tina Fey and Wet Leg, live from Television Centre in London. Broadway Video and Universal Television Alternative Studio’s U.K. team make it for Sky and NOW. U.S. viewers can find it on Peacock. Michaels is the executive producer, the same credit he has held in New York since 1975.

When Sky ordered 12 more episodes on May 7, Michaels said he was “incredibly proud of our team” and grateful to Sky. Phil Edgar-Jones, Sky’s unscripted chief, called the show the company’s most talked-about of the year. Series 2 started Sept. 12. Twenty staff writers feed it. Charlie Skelton runs Weekend Update. Magliano is in the original London cast, listed by Sky with Taskmaster and Live at the Apollo.

Martha Plimpton, after watching a documentary that showed the 8H cut meeting in Michaels’s office, said he needs more women in that room making decisions. She was talking about New York. London answered in public, on a show he also runs, without a statement from 30 Rock. That is not silence. It is a split job: one studio books the host, the other books the dunk.

Five Days on the Cast, Then Three Hosting Nights

Gillis has been through this machine before. The dates are short and they keep repeating.

THE SNL CLOCK FOR SHANE GILLIS

  1. Sept. 11, 2019: Named to the Season 45 featured cast with Bowen Yang and Chloe Fineman.
  2. Sept. 16, 2019: Cut after podcast clips using anti-Asian slurs and other language the show called “offensive, hurtful and unacceptable.”
  3. February 2024: Returns as host. Michaels later said NBC made the 2019 call and that he was angry, because he thought Gillis was “the real thing.”
  4. March 2025: Second hosting night.
  5. Oct. 10, 2026: Third hosting night. The gym line airs.
  6. Oct. 17, 2026: SNL UK Weekend Update punches the host the New York show just paid.

Michaels has been blunt about the first firing. He said Gillis “said something stupid, but it got blown up into the end of the world,” and that “200 Asian companies were going to boycott the show.” He also said he was “not on that side” of NBC’s decision, then stayed in touch and brought Gillis back. The 2024 return was the test. The 2026 booking is the habit.

A show that fires a cast member in five days and then hands him the hosting slot three times is not frozen. It is running a calculation: the audience Gillis brings is larger than the statement a firing once made. London’s roast does not undo the booking. It gives the franchise a clip for the people who hated the joke, without New York having to retract the monologue it still hosts on YouTube.

The Oct. 10 Show Was His Highest-Rated Hosting Night

Nielsen Live+Same Day figures put the Gillis episode at 4.4 million viewers and 1.1 million adults 18-49. That was up 1 percent in total viewers and 4 percent in the demo from Dakota Johnson’s episode the week before, and up 4 percent in viewers and 15 percent in the demo from the third episode of the prior season. It was also Gillis’s best Nielsen night of the three.

GILLIS ON SNL, NIELSEN LIVE+SAME DAY

Hosting night Total viewers Adults 18-49 Host screen time
February 2024 4 million 1 million 27:11
March 2025 4.3 million 895,000 27:22
Oct. 10, 2026 4.4 million 1.1 million 28:22

Those live numbers do not include Peacock or YouTube. By Oct. 19 the official monologue clip had 3.9 million YouTube views. It was not the episode’s biggest upload. A fake HVAC commercial, Upfront Heating & Air Conditioning, had 5.9 million. The Hegseth USS Lincoln cold open had 5.6 million. Green Eggs and Ham, the f-bomb sketch, had 2.4 million. The fight attached itself to a gym line that lost, on the show’s own channel, to a heating ad.

Gillis logged 28:22 of screen time, more than any other host on that measure since Jason Sudeikis in October 2021, and the highest of his own three visits. New York did not hide him. It used him.

Apatow’s Norm Film Landed in the Same Window

Judd Apatow’s Netflix film Norm: The Tale of Norm Macdonald began streaming Oct. 16, six days after Gillis and one day before Magliano. It is 2 hours 7 minutes of archival footage, built so Macdonald does most of the talking. The Weekend Update chapter is the one people reach for when SNL gets accused of blinking.

NBC entertainment chief Don Ohlmeyer pulled Macdonald off Update in 1997. Ohlmeyer was a close friend of O.J. Simpson. Macdonald had kept punching Simpson through the trial and after the acquittal, including the line that murder was now legal in California. He stayed in the cast, then left in March 1998. He died in 2021.

They asked him to ease up on all of the O.J. jokes because Don Ohlmeyer, the head of the network, was best friends with O.J. Norm and James Downey, who ran Update at that time, they just went harder. When he was let go for “not being funny,” it was clearly such a lie. All to protect a murderer, which is really what it was.

Judd Apatow, director, on Obsessed: The Podcast

That firing was a network executive protecting a friend. Gillis’s 2019 ouster was a network looking at advertiser boycott threats before he had done a sketch. His 2026 problem is different again. Nobody pulled the monologue. Nobody cut him from the credits. The same producer’s other show called him a name the first show is not allowed to say, then went on to the next host.

Macdonald doubled down and lost the desk. Gillis told the gym joke, kept the YouTube upload, and watched London take the moral close. Those are not the same act of nerve, and stacking them as one tale of SNL cowardice flattens both.

New York Stays Dark Until Halloween

The U.S. show’s next live episode is Oct. 31. SNL UK is on again Oct. 24 with Cynthia Erivo and Blossoms, still in its autumn block before a 2027 back half. Michaels has not spoken about Magliano’s line. Gillis has not posted a reply that turned up in public. The official New York account’s last big move on the episode remains the monologue it chose to promote.

WHO ANSWERED THE GYM LINE

  • Dan Levy: Called the whores line misogyny and said men need to defend women more.
  • Maren Morris: Shot a gym video that threw the word back at him.
  • Jessica Valenti: Framed the bait talk as rape culture, not a clothes joke.
  • Martha Plimpton: Aimed at the cut meeting and asked for more women in Michaels’s office.
  • Ania Magliano: Used the London Update desk, and a word NBC will not air, as the franchise’s on-camera reply.

30 Rock can still do what it always does on Halloween: cut the joke, keep the joke, or say nothing and start the next dress rehearsal. London already spent the off-week. The host New York keeps inviting is now also the punchline its other studio can afford to say out loud.
