Modern Warfare 4 Sells Campaign Access After the Game Pass Cut
Digital pre-orders unlocked the Modern Warfare 4 campaign on October 16, while Game Pass waits until Holiday 2027 and multiplayer until October 23.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 opened its campaign on October 16 for digital pre-orders, a week before the October 23 launch and a year before Game Pass. Infinity Ward’s story is playable now. Multiplayer is not, and a subscription will not get you in.
That split is the commercial design. After two Black Ops games arrived on Game Pass on day one, this Modern Warfare entry is a full-price sale, and the campaign week is how Activision collects the money before Friday’s playlist opens.
Digital Pre-Orders Opened the Campaign on October 16
Activision’s Call of Duty account posted on October 16 that campaign early access was live, and Infinity Ward quoted the same beat within minutes. The window covers the full story mode on every platform that is selling a digital Standard or Vault edition, including Nintendo Switch 2.

Multiplayer stays closed until October 23. DMZ, the extraction mode built around Hajin, opens for the same digital buyers on October 20, three days before launch. A boxed copy bought from a retailer does not unlock either window, even if the disc was reserved months ago.
THE MW4 UNLOCK CLOCK
| Mode | Opens | Who gets it |
|---|---|---|
| Campaign | October 16, 2026 | Digital Standard or Vault pre-order |
| DMZ | October 20, 2026 | Same digital pre-orders |
| Multiplayer | October 23, 2026 | Everyone, including physical copies |
| Game Pass | Holiday 2027 | Subscribers; no exact day named |
Start times can slip by platform and time zone, and Activision still has not posted a region-by-region hour for the October 23 unlock. Plan around the date, not a midnight promise that is not on the official blog.
The Holiday 2027 Game Pass Holdback
The COD Intel Team put the subscription terms in writing on October 15, the day before the campaign went live. Modern Warfare 4 “launches October 23 as a standalone release,” the post says, and players who want it at launch “must purchase it separately.”
To play the game at launch, players must purchase it separately; it will not be included with Game Pass until Holiday 2027.
COD Intel Team, Call of Duty blog, October 15, 2026
That Holiday 2027 Game Pass window is not a surprise sprung this month. On April 21, Xbox cut the top tier and took new Call of Duty games out of the day-one library in the same note, dropping Game Pass Ultimate to $22.99 a month from $29.99 and PC Game Pass to $13.99 from $16.49.
Beginning this year, future Call of Duty titles won’t join Game Pass Ultimate or PC Game Pass at launch. New Call of Duty games will be added to Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass during the following holiday season (about a year later), while existing Call of Duty titles already in the library will continue to be available.
Team Xbox, Xbox Wire, April 21, 2026
Black Ops 6 in 2024 was the first annual Call of Duty to launch inside the subscription after Microsoft bought Activision. Black Ops 7 followed in 2025. Modern Warfare 4 is the first new entry under the reversed rule, so a subscriber who treated the last two launches as a library extra now faces a store price instead.
Ultimate still holds the back catalog the Intel post names, including Black Ops 7, Black Ops 6, and Modern Warfare III. The new campaign is the title that sits outside that shelf until next year’s holiday season.
Who Qualifies for Early Access, and Who Does Not
Early access is a digital checkout perk, not a platform exclusive and not a Vault upsell. Standard at $69.99 and Vault at $99.99 both open the campaign and DMZ on the same dates. Xbox Play Anywhere means one Xbox purchase covers console and PC.
WHAT A DIGITAL PRE-ORDER UNLOCKS
- Platforms: Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, PlayStation 5, Battle.net, Steam, and Nintendo Switch 2 all qualify if the edition is digital.
- Campaign and DMZ: Story from October 16, extraction from October 20, both tied to the same pre-order.
- Launch cosmetics: Hunter Killer operator skin, Gilded Pearl camo pack, and the Inner Circuit M4 blueprint, with an Xbox 25th Anniversary treatment on Xbox consoles.
- Loyalty cut: 10% off Vault at participating stores if you already owned and played a qualifying Call of Duty from 2019 onward, including through Game Pass on the same account.
- Xbox multiplayer add-on: Online multiplayer on Xbox still needs Game Pass Essential, sold separately, even after you buy the game.
Vault piles on operator packs, a signature weapon set, a DMZ deployment bonus, and one season of BlackCell once the Season 1 battle pass exists in-game. None of that opens the campaign earlier than Standard. Physical editions are the full base game on October 23 and nothing before it.
Store pages have been blunt about the subscription gap for months. The Xbox listing for the game repeats that it is not in Game Pass at launch, then points buyers to Xbox Play Anywhere on console and PC as the consolation for paying once.
Private Park’s Invasion Is What Buyers Are Finishing
The product being sold this week is a 16-mission campaign, and people who paid are finishing it before the ranked playlists exist. You play as Private Park, a young South Korean soldier on mandatory service whose training exercise collapses when North Korea invades. Official copy places the opening in Hajin City, then sends the war through trench fights in Korea, close-quarters work in New York, chases in Paris, and SAS night raids in Mumbai.
Captain Price runs a second thread. After the events of Modern Warfare III, he is off the books, hunting a weapon that could shift the balance of power, and his plot is timed in the days before the invasion rather than beside Park on the same street. The official story primer frames him as an operator turned outlaw who has already killed General Shepherd and gone underground.
One mission, Stranded, drops Park’s squad behind the lines in North Korea on a large map with multiple objectives, which is also the campaign’s handshake with DMZ. Reviewers who sat with the full story called out that chapter as the swing for sandbox design, and they put more weight on Park’s squad than on Price’s revenge run. Early Steam user reviews have been strongly positive, a rare mood for this series in recent launches, and streamer TimTheTatman said the campaign “was one of the best CoD campaigns I have ever played.”
That warmth is useful to Activision this week. A liked story that can be completed before Friday gives digital buyers a finished single-player game while Game Pass users are still looking at a store tile. Some subscribers already say they will skip the $69.99 buy and wait for the free Warzone client instead of paying for a campaign they used to get inside a monthly fee.
A Perk That Vanished for Black Ops 6 and 7
Campaign early access is not a new trick. Modern Warfare II and Modern Warfare III both opened their stories for digital pre-orders a week before launch. Black Ops 6 and Black Ops 7 did not, and those were the two years Call of Duty launched on Game Pass. The perk returned for Modern Warfare 4 in the same cycle Xbox took new Call of Duty games out of the day-one library.
HOW THE WINDOW CAME BACK
- April 21, 2026: Xbox cuts Ultimate from $29.99 to $22.99 and says future Call of Duty titles will join the service the following holiday, about a year later.
- October 15, 2026: The COD Intel Team names Holiday 2027 as the Game Pass date and restates campaign early access for October 16 and DMZ early access for October 20.
- October 16, 2026: Digital pre-orders start the 16-mission campaign.
- October 20, 2026: The same pre-orders get all of DMZ, including the Hajin map and the Forward Operating Base loop.
- October 23, 2026: Multiplayer and physical copies go live. Warzone integration is still listed for Season 1, without a day.
Read in that order, the week of story looks less like a gift and more like a replacement for the day-one install Game Pass used to provide. Players who would have booted Black Ops from the subscription now have to decide by Friday whether the campaign they can already finish is worth the box price.
Disc Copies, Nintendo, and the Locked Modes
Retail discs ship on October 23. Activision’s editions page lists campaign and DMZ early access only on digital Standard and Vault, so a physical pre-order placed in June is still a Friday game. That split pushes buyers toward storefronts that take the money immediately and can gate the download.
Nintendo Switch 2 is in the digital list, which puts a current Modern Warfare on a Nintendo platform at launch. Pre-load and eShop checkout follow the same early-access rules as PlayStation 5 and Xbox. Cloud play on Xbox is listed with a Game Pass plan, but the Xbox page still requires a game purchase, so a subscription does not substitute for the $69.99 license.
What remains locked is the live service most Call of Duty hours actually go into. DMZ’s three-day head start will let digital buyers push Hajin progression, FOB upgrades, and bounties before the rest of the population arrives, which is a real edge in an extraction mode and the loudest fairness complaint around the October 20 window. Multiplayer, including Ground War-scale maps tied to the campaign’s war, stays dark until the 23rd.
Twelve New Maps Wait Until October 23
Infinity Ward’s pitch for day one is grounded gunplay and 12 all-new 6v6 maps, plus larger maps that mix vehicles and infantry. Ballistic Authority is the studio’s name for a weapon stack that drops bloom and ties recoil, audio, and visibility to the shot. None of that playlist is in the early-access build.
WHAT WE KNOW
- Campaign: Live since October 16 for digital Standard and Vault on the six named platforms.
- DMZ: Opens October 20 for those same accounts.
- Game Pass: Not at launch; official window is Holiday 2027.
WHAT IS UNCONFIRMED
- Season 1 date: Warzone integration and the Vault BlackCell season wait on a Season 1 battle pass with no published day.
- Friday unlock hour: Activision has not posted exact local times for October 23 on each store.
The campaign will still be there on Friday for anyone who waits, including disc owners and anyone who refuses the $69.99 gate. Digital buyers who already started Private Park’s war are simply a week ahead on the one mode Activision could ship without live servers, which is exactly the mode it needed to sell after Game Pass stopped carrying new Call of Duty at launch.
