The 2027 BMW X5 Runs Five Powertrains Off One Line
BMW’s 2027 X5 keeps one body for five drives, so the new iX5 has to win on range and 460 kW charging.
The 2027 BMW X5 40 xDrive reached U.S. dealers in October 2026, months before the first electric iX5. BMW kept one body in Spartanburg, South Carolina, for gas, plug-in hybrid, battery power, diesel in other markets, and hydrogen later, then dressed that body in Neue Klasse screens and lights.
The shared line is how BMW funds its most important SUV while the iX5 sells a 144 kWh pack and 460 kW charging. Early drives still find the turbo six the one that feels like a BMW.
BMW Kept CLAR So One Body Can Take Five Drives
The fifth-generation X5, coded G65, wears Neue Klasse design and software. It does not sit on the dedicated electric platform used by the iX3. BMW reworked its Cluster Architecture so petrol, diesel, plug-in hybrid, battery-electric, and a later fuel-cell car can share mounting points, a cabin, and a paint shop.
That choice is the whole product plan. A pure Neue Klasse X5 would have forced a second body and a second factory recipe. This one lets Plant Spartanburg stay the first plant to run five drivetrains on a single assembly line, a point BMW made at the June 30, 2026 Home of X premiere.
THE FIVE DRIVES IN ONE BODY
- Gas mild hybrid: The X5 40 and 40 xDrive use a 3.0-liter inline-six with 48-volt assist and an eight-speed automatic.
- Diesel mild hybrid: A 40d xDrive is part of the global range and is not in the U.S. launch set.
- Plug-in hybrid: The X5 50e xDrive pairs that six with a motor inside the gearbox and a 26.5 kWh underfloor pack.
- Battery-electric: The iX5 60 xDrive is the first all-electric X5, on 800-volt Gen6 hardware borrowed from Neue Klasse EVs.
- Hydrogen later: The iX5 Hydrogen is slated as BMW’s first production fuel-cell vehicle, with a claimed range of up to 466 miles on the third-generation stack.
Dr. Joachim Post, the BMW AG board member for development, tied the old nameplate to the new kit when the car was unveiled.
With its imposing presence and flawless symbiosis of comfort and driving pleasure, the BMW X5 became a global bestseller. And now the latest generation also benefits from the technologies in the Neue Klasse and the widest possible range of drive systems.

U.S. shops get gas, the 50e, and the iX5 first. Diesel stays overseas. The V8 M Performance model is due later in 2027. Hydrogen remains further out, with flat tanks meant to keep cabin space when it does arrive.
Spartanburg Will Build Gas, Battery, and Hydrogen X5s
Plant Spartanburg has built the X5 since the original arrived for 1999 and founded BMW’s Sports Activity Vehicle line. More than 3 million X5s have been sold worldwide since then, and BMW says a third of them went to the United States. The factory assembled 412,799 X models in 2025, its seventh year above 400,000, and has built more than 7.3 million vehicles since 1994.
BMW closed a $1.7 billion South Carolina expansion at the same premiere, covering Spartanburg and the new Woodruff battery plant. The iX5 is set to be the first fully electric BMW assembled in the United States, with vehicle build starting late in 2026 and customer cars following in the first quarter of 2027. Chairman Milan Nedeljković called the spend a vote of confidence in U.S. production. Dr. Robert Engelhorn, president of BMW Manufacturing, said the future of X models will still be shaped in South Carolina.
FROM PREMIERE TO THE FIRST IX5
- 1999: Spartanburg starts X5 production and BMW’s SAV line.
- June 30, 2026: World premiere at Home of X, with the $1.7 billion South Carolina package marked complete.
- August 2026: Series production of the fifth-generation X5 begins in Spartanburg.
- October 2026: The X5 40 xDrive goes on sale in the United States.
- December 2026: Woodruff is scheduled to begin series production of iX5 high-voltage batteries, then haul them about 15 miles to the car plant.
- First quarter 2027: Rear-drive X5 40, X5 50e xDrive, and iX5 60 xDrive follow.
Woodruff is built around cell-to-pack assembly and, BMW says, uses no fossil fuels in normal operation. The iX5 pack is the largest high-voltage battery BMW has put in a production EV. Keeping that hardware 15 miles from final assembly is how a gasoline SUV plant starts building electric ones without splitting the nameplate in two.
The X5 40 xDrive Has Reached U.S. Dealers
The launch car is still a B58 turbo six. A new turbo raises output by 19 hp to 394 hp, and torque climbs from 383 lb-ft to 428 lb-ft. BMW quotes 0 to 60 mph in 5.1 seconds, or 4.8 seconds with a one-foot rollout, and an electronically limited 155 mph when the car is equipped for it.
The 48-volt motor inside the eight-speed can add up to 17 hp and 148 lb-ft for short bursts, and it smooths stop-start. The engine uses the Miller cycle, dual injection, and switchable exhaust rockers that cut drag on overrun so more energy can go back into the small battery under the load floor. Adaptive suspension is standard. Air springs, rear-steer, and the richer chassis packs remain extra.
On the road the 40 xDrive still does the old X5 trick. Highway miles stay quiet on the optional air suspension, and on a bent road the steering stays precise enough that the SUV does not feel like it is fighting its own mass. A Mercedes GLE or Volvo XC90 can match the comfort. They do not match that response. BMW quotes destination at $1,450 on every U.S. X5.
U.S. PRICES AND TIMING
| Model | MSRP | With destination | U.S. arrival |
|---|---|---|---|
| X5 40 | $69,800 | $71,250 | First quarter 2027 |
| X5 40 xDrive | $72,100 | $73,550 | October 2026 |
| X5 50e xDrive | $77,500 | $78,950 | First quarter 2027 |
| iX5 60 xDrive | $79,800 | $81,250 | First quarter 2027 |
The 50e uses the same six, now at 308 hp, plus a 194 hp motor for 483 hp and 516 lb-ft combined. BMW estimates 0 to 60 mph in 4.6 seconds, an 87 mph electric top speed, and 44 miles of electric range from tests that follow EPA methods, about 15 percent more than the last 50e. Leather is still optional. Veganza is the standard upholstery. Interesting paints remain on the options list.
Why the iX5 Has to Sell Range and Charge Speed
Because the body is shared, the electric X5 cannot lean on a skateboard platform to feel special. It has to win on the spec sheet that Neue Klasse hardware makes possible. Dual motors make 570 hp and 593 lb-ft. The rear electrically excited motor, the main drive, is rated 325 hp and 369 lb-ft. The front asynchronous motor adds 245 hp and 225 lb-ft and can switch off so the SUV runs rear-drive when that is enough.
BMW quotes 0 to 60 mph in 4.4 seconds and a 130 mph limiter. The cylindrical cells are 120 millimeters tall and 46 millimeters across, the same chemistry as the shorter cells in the iX3, with almost 30 percent more usable energy per cell and 20 percent higher pack density than Gen5 prismatic cells. A NACS port is standard. Two-way charging covers vehicle-to-load, vehicle-to-home, and vehicle-to-vehicle.
IX5 60 XDRIVE AT A GLANCE
- Pack: A 144 kWh cell-to-pack battery on an 800-volt system, the largest BMW has sold in an EV.
- Range claim: Up to 435 miles, a preliminary BMW figure from testing that follows EPA procedures, not a window sticker.
- DC peak: Up to 460 kW, with 10 to 80 percent in 22 minutes and an estimated 170 miles in 10 minutes.
- AC rate: Up to 15.4 kW on a home unit.
Those charge numbers assume a cabinet that can actually hold 460 kW. Most U.S. stalls cannot. BMW has already had to use a specially upgraded IONNA site to show the peak in public. The 435-mile claim will live or die on the EPA label that has not been posted yet. Until that sticker exists, the iX5 is selling a very large pack and a very fast theoretical plug.
In motion the electric SUV is the more complete machine on paper, with silent thrust, an available active anti-roll system, and BMW’s Heart of Joy computer tying drive, brakes, and regen together. You do not feel the extra battery mass the way older electric SUVs telegraphed it, and regen is strong enough for true one-pedal stops. It also sanded off the last bit of mischief. Where the gas X5 still takes a corner like a tall sports sedan, the iX5 does the same work in a cooler, flatter way. That is the cost of putting Gen6 hardware in a comfort-first CLAR shell.
Panoramic iDrive Runs Across the Windshield Base
The cabin is the other Neue Klasse transplant. BMW Panoramic Vision throws speed, limits, nav, and range across the base of the windshield, so the driver looks forward instead of down at a cluster. A free-cut 17.9-inch central screen sits below it, with Operating System X laying widgets on a map. An optional 14.6-inch passenger screen nests beside it and can go dark if the interior camera thinks the driver is watching a film.
The wheel is flat-topped so it does not block the projection, with clear haptic pads that change with the function in use. Optional slate on the console and glass on the shifter, volume knob, and seat switches replace piano black. Automatic doors are on the iX5. Winglet handles sit in the pillars and need a light touch, plus a stack of backup ways to get in if the fancy bits fail. Standard sports seats are heated. Massage, four-zone climate, and a Bowers & Wilkins set with Dolby Atmos cost extra. The panoramic roof’s two glass panels cover about 28 square feet.
The projection is thinner than Lincoln’s similar strip and uses a 3D effect that stays readable in hard sun. Voice control can find buried settings, including switching the strip from metric. The rest of the software still hides functions in menus. Designers at a Munich preview said this X5 has the tallest front end in the model’s history, which restores SUV proportions and also leaves a lot of sheet metal around a smaller kidney. The headlights can show an “X” graphic. The front-quarter view is the part that will keep people arguing, the same way BMW faces have for years. Sales of the last X5 suggest the plant can live with that fight.
BMW’s Symbiotic Drive idea is that aids should guess what the driver wants instead of fighting the wheel. Steer into the next lane, look that way, and skip the stalk, and the system can switch the turn signal on rather than bounce you back. The optional Highway Assistant allows hands-free running on divided highways, and a glance at a mirror can request a lane change. The same camera-and-infrared watch can lose the driver in late-day sun and then fire distraction warnings for small glances. If the cabin is going to be this full of glass, that watch needs to get less twitchy.
Rivals Keep a Third Row the X5 Dropped
Audi’s new Q7 still seats seven as standard. Mercedes still sells a cheaper four-cylinder GLE and a third row as an extra. The X5 is a five-seater, with the larger X7 left to do three-row duty, and BMW is asking more money than a base GLE for an inline-six and the new screens. Standard all-wheel drive is the German default in this class. BMW still sells a rear-drive 40, just not first.
That packaging is another CLAR leftover. A dedicated electric architecture might have freed underfloor space for a fold-flat third row. This body had to leave room for a six, a fuel tank, a 26.5 kWh hybrid pack, a 144 kWh EV pack, and, later, hydrogen tanks. Five seats is the compromise that makes five powertrains possible.
The 40 xDrive is the car in stock. The iX5 60 xDrive is scheduled to reach U.S. dealers in the first quarter of 2027, from $81,250 including destination, once Woodruff’s packs and Spartanburg’s line are both at rate.
