Microsoft Pulls OneDrive Copilot Shortcuts It Put in Explorer
Microsoft is retiring eight OneDrive Copilot actions from File Explorer, 14 months after selling them as a few-click time saver, and leaving Ask Copilot instead.
Microsoft will begin retiring eight OneDrive Copilot actions from the File Explorer right-click menu in mid-November 2026. Only Ask Copilot stays in that menu. Microsoft 365 message center post MC1515940, published October 19, 2026, says the change should finish by early December 2026.
The shortcuts it is removing are the ones it added in September 2025. Back then, a Microsoft 365 subscriber could summarize a file, build an FAQ, compare documents, or ask a question without opening it.
Eight Copilot Actions Off the Right-Click Menu
The notice is tagged as a major change with user impact, admin impact, and retirement. Microsoft’s one-line reason is that it is simplifying how people use Copilot with OneDrive files in File Explorer. The company is retiring Copilot actions from File Explorer that now sit under the OneDrive entry when you right-click a cloud file.
The 8 commands leaving that menu are Summarize, Create FAQ, Compare Files, Ask a question, Explain image, Explain images, Compare images, and Extract text. Ask Copilot is a different command, and it remains. So does Copilot in the OneDrive activity center. Files opened through the surviving chat are attached by reference, so existing permissions and protections still apply.
THE EIGHT ACTIONS LEAVING THE MENU
| Copilot action | File Explorer right-click menu | Still available |
|---|---|---|
| Summarize | Retired | OneDrive activity center; Ask Copilot chat |
| Create FAQ | Retired | OneDrive activity center; Ask Copilot chat |
| Compare Files | Retired | OneDrive activity center; Ask Copilot chat |
| Ask a question | Retired | OneDrive activity center; Ask Copilot chat |
| Explain image | Retired | OneDrive activity center; Ask Copilot chat |
| Explain images | Retired | OneDrive activity center; Ask Copilot chat |
| Compare images | Retired | OneDrive activity center; Ask Copilot chat |
| Extract text | Retired | OneDrive activity center; Ask Copilot chat |
Who is affected, in Microsoft’s wording, is users who use Copilot with OneDrive files in File Explorer. Platforms listed are OneDrive, Copilot, and File Explorer. No admin setup is required to turn the change on, because the company is taking the entries out itself.
Microsoft Sold Those Shortcuts as a Few Clicks
On September 4, 2025, the OneDrive blog told Microsoft 365 subscribers that Copilot had arrived in File Explorer and the activity center. The pitch was daily file work, not a new app. On Windows 11, you selected a OneDrive file, right-clicked, hovered on OneDrive, and picked a command.
With just a few clicks, Copilot can help you summarize lengthy documents, generate an FAQ, compare files, or answer questions about your file.
Microsoft OneDrive blog, September 4, 2025
The same post said Copilot could summarize lengthy documents with a few clicks, build an FAQ, or answer a question from the file. Compare Files was the File Explorer special: select up to 5 files and Copilot would draw a short table of differences. Image tools came later, which is why Explain image, Explain images, Compare images, and Extract text now sit on the retirement list beside the original four.
A matching admin-center note that autumn said the feature was on by default and needed no admin configuration. Commercial tenants were told a qualifying Copilot plan was required and that the rollout was already under way from late August 2025. Fourteen months after that pitch, those dedicated clicks are the clutter Microsoft is clearing.
The March Pledge to Cut Copilot Entry Points
On March 20, 2026, Pavan Davuluri, EVP of Windows + Devices, wrote to Windows Insiders after months of feedback. He said the company would put AI where it was most meaningful, with craft and focus. File Explorer was on that quality list as a surface that had to launch quicker, flicker less, and handle everyday file tasks more reliably. Copilot in Explorer was not named in the first cut.
You will see us be more intentional about how and where Copilot integrates across Windows, focusing on experiences that are genuinely useful and well-crafted. As part of this, we are reducing unnecessary Copilot entry points, starting with apps like Snipping Tool, Photos, Widgets and Notepad.
Pavan Davuluri, EVP, Windows + Devices, Windows Insider Blog
That sentence is the through-line. Microsoft spent 2024 and 2025 putting Copilot on the taskbar, in Search, in Notepad, in Photos, in Snipping Tool, and under the OneDrive right-click. By March it was reducing unnecessary Copilot entry points in the small system apps first. The OneDrive File Explorer actions were still live then. MC1515940 is those actions joining the same retreat, even though the surviving Copilot path is a conversation Microsoft still wants people to open.
By early 2026, the File Explorer menu was already on the homemade list of Copilot hooks people were switching off, next to Search, Notepad, Photos, and Paint. The running complaint in those threads is that a later update puts the AI back. A company-wide retirement is the first time that cleanup is Microsoft’s idea rather than a setting buried in the OS.
Why the Context Menu Itself Is Being Rebuilt
The Copilot rows did not land on a quiet menu. Windows 11 already hid a long tail of commands behind Show more options, and every app that injected itself made the modern menu slower to draw. On August 17, 2026, in Insider Preview Experimental Build 26340.9212, Microsoft said the right-click menu had become a problem it needed to own.
The Insider post describes a context menu that became cluttered and sluggish, and it promises a faster default, fewer top-level items, and a Settings page under Personalization. A Customize menu command sits at the bottom of the new list. You can hide app extensions, turn built-in commands such as Send to on or off, put cloud storage in its own section, and restore a Windows 10 feel by lining Cut, Copy, Paste, Rename, Delete, and Share up as a vertical list and moving Properties to the bottom.
Those Copilot OneDrive rows were extra work for a menu Microsoft is now trying to open in less time. Each one used the same icon. On Windows 11 they lived in a flyout you reached by hovering OneDrive, which added a pause before the commands even appeared. Pulling eight of them out is the OneDrive team doing, for its own entries, what the Windows shell team asked of everyone else: fewer top-level actions, less identical chrome, a shorter path to a ready menu.
Ask Copilot Survives, the One-Click Tasks Do Not
The functions are not being deleted. Microsoft is deleting the dedicated buttons. Anyone who used Summarize as a named click now has to start a chat, or leave File Explorer for the activity center. That is the trade: one extra step for a specific job, a shorter right-click list for everyone else.
THE PATHS THAT STILL WORK
- Ask Copilot: Right-click a OneDrive file in File Explorer and choose Ask Copilot to open a conversation with that file attached.
- File Explorer Home: Hover a file in File Explorer Home and select the Copilot icon to start the same kind of chat.
- Activity center: Open the OneDrive activity center from the taskbar or notification area to reach the named actions that are leaving the menu.
Ask Copilot is the funnel. It matches the broader Windows habit of routing people into one Copilot box instead of a row of single-purpose commands. Compare Files is the command that loses the most from that shift, because the 2025 blog sold it as a File Explorer trick for up to 5 files at once. You can still ask Copilot to compare, but you are writing the request instead of picking the label.
WHAT WE KNOW
- The menu cut: The eight named OneDrive Copilot actions leave the File Explorer context menu worldwide between mid-November 2026 and early December 2026.
- The leftover command: Ask Copilot stays in the right-click menu, and a Copilot icon remains on hover in File Explorer Home.
- The other home: Microsoft says the OneDrive Copilot actions remain in the OneDrive activity center.
- Admin work: No tenant switch is required. Microsoft asks organizations to notify users and update training that still names the old menu clicks.
WHAT IS UNCONFIRMED
- Per-device timing: Microsoft has not given exact dates for individual PCs inside the mid-November to early December window.
- Compare as a chat: The notice does not say whether a typed Ask Copilot prompt matches the old 5-file comparison table.
- A later return: Microsoft has not said these dedicated menu rows will stay gone after early December 2026.
For people who already hid AI Actions, the visible change will be small. For anyone who trained a team on hover, OneDrive, Summarize, the muscle memory breaks in November.
Outlook’s Copilot Themes Freeze in October
The File Explorer cut is not a one-off. Message center post MC1492954, published October 9, 2026, says Microsoft is retiring Themes by Copilot in Outlook worldwide from mid-October 2026 through late October 2026. That window is already open. The feature created an AI-generated theme in Settings for people with a Copilot license, on new Outlook for Windows, Outlook for Android, Outlook for iOS, Outlook for Mac, and Outlook on the web.
Once the retirement hits an account, Themes by Copilot removed from Settings means you cannot pick a new Copilot theme or return to one after you switch. A theme that is already applied stays until you change it. A theme set to refresh automatically keeps its last image and stops cycling. Microsoft gave no product reason in that notice, and it said no admin action is required.
TWO COPILOT RETIREMENTS THIS AUTUMN
| Feature | Where it lived | Rollout window | What remains |
|---|---|---|---|
| OneDrive Copilot actions | File Explorer context menu | Mid-November 2026 to early December 2026 | Ask Copilot, File Explorer Home icon, activity center |
| Themes by Copilot | Outlook Settings | Mid-October 2026 to late October 2026 | Current theme until you change it, then no way back |
The two cuts are not the same product decision. Outlook is killing a decorative generator and freezing whatever image is on screen. OneDrive is keeping the file tools and moving them out of a right-click list. Together they show the same autumn pattern: Copilot surfaces that were easy to add in 2024 and 2025 are being taken off screens that Microsoft now wants quieter.
Rewrite the Guides Before Mid-November
MC1515940 is blunt about the paperwork. Notify users. Update training and help desk documentation that still tells people to right-click a OneDrive file, hover on OneDrive, and pick Summarize, Create FAQ, or Compare Files. Those sentences become wrong as soon as the retirement reaches a PC.
THE COPILOT CUTBACK CALENDAR
- September 4, 2025: Microsoft’s OneDrive blog adds Copilot actions to File Explorer and the activity center for Microsoft 365 subscribers.
- March 20, 2026: Pavan Davuluri tells Insiders that Windows will reduce unnecessary Copilot entry points, starting with Snipping Tool, Photos, Widgets, and Notepad.
- August 17, 2026: Windows Insiders get a rebuilt File Explorer context menu aimed at a faster, shorter, customizable right-click.
- October 9, 2026: Microsoft publishes MC1492954, retiring Themes by Copilot in Outlook from mid-October through late October 2026.
- October 19, 2026: Microsoft publishes MC1515940, retiring the eight OneDrive Copilot actions from the File Explorer context menu.
- Mid-November 2026: Removal of those File Explorer actions begins worldwide.
- Early December 2026: Microsoft expects that File Explorer menu cut to be complete.
The replacement language is already in the notice. Right-click and choose Ask Copilot. Hover in File Explorer Home and use the Copilot icon. Open the OneDrive activity center if you still want a named action. Organizations that printed screenshots of the old flyout have from the October 19 notice until mid-November 2026 to swap those images. After that, the clicks Microsoft sold as a time saver in September 2025 start disappearing from the menu they were built for.
