YouTube Thumbnails Glitch on Samsung’s Video-First Fold 8
Samsung sold the Galaxy Z Fold 8 as a YouTube canvas, but thumbnails now land oversized, undersized, or off-grid on both screens.
YouTube thumbnails are landing too big, too small, or off-grid on the Galaxy Z Fold 8, the foldable Samsung sold as a video canvas. The glitch shows up on both the cover and the inner display, and it still has no confirmed fix.
Samsung spent Unpacked in July 2026 telling buyers this shorter, wider Fold was built for short clips and long videos. The first layout now failing on that canvas is YouTube’s own home grid.
Oversized Thumbs on Both Fold 8 Screens
A Galaxy Z Fold 8 owner posted the bug on Samsung’s community forum on Sunday, 11 October, with shots of video stills sitting in the wrong place. Samsung support replied and asked for more detail, including a screen recording of the feed.
The same week, another Fold 8 owner described thumbnails that were too large or too small, with some of them changing size on their own while the feed scrolled. That owner said a Galaxy Z Fold 6 never did this, which is why the new phone is getting the blame.
Plenty of Fold 8 units draw the grid normally. The split is what makes the fault look like software state, a cached layout, or a density guess, rather than a cracked panel.
WHAT OWNERS SAY THE FEED IS DOING
- Wrong size: Still images show up oversized in one row and undersized in the next.
- Off-grid: Tiles sit out of line on the cover screen and on the inner display.
- Live resize: Some thumbs snap to a new size while the user scrolls.
- Uneven fleet: Other Fold 8 owners say their YouTube grid looks fine.
Reviewer Josh Skinner, who uses a Fold 8, said the drawing fault comes and goes but hits often. Jeff Springer, also on a Fold 8, has seen thumbs look strange from time to time. That matches a bug that follows the app, not a single bad phone.
Samsung Pitched This Shape for YouTube
The Fold 8 is not a thinner Fold 7. Samsung gave it a passport-like body, a 5.5-inch cover (5.4 inches if you subtract the rounded corners), and a 7.6-inch inner panel, and it lists the phone at 201 grams.
In a 13 August note, Samsung said the shorter, wider design is shaped for the content you consume. The company called the 10:16 cover the right shape for messaging, browsing, and short-form video, and the 4:3 main screen the one you unfold for full-screen movies and e-books.
Kadesh Beckford, Samsung UK’s smartphone specialist, went further in a 28 August tips piece. Samsung’s own copy in that piece says you turn the inner panel to landscape for a 4:3 ratio suited to YouTube, streaming, and gaming.
For me, it’s all about the displays and aspect ratios. The Cover Display is excellent for quickly responding to messages and watching short-form content, while the expansive 7.6-inch Main Display transforms everything from web browsing to streaming into a truly immersive experience.

Beckford also called the Fold 8 the pick for entertainment, with “carefully optimised aspect ratios.” The same pages sell up to 3,000 nits on the inner panel and a 4,800 mAh battery that Samsung’s lab rated for up to 26 hours of continuous video playback on the main screen.
FOLD 8 VS FOLD 7 DISPLAYS
| Display | Galaxy Z Fold 8 | Galaxy Z Fold 7 |
|---|---|---|
| Cover size | 5.5-inch | 6.5-inch |
| Cover ratio | 10:16 | 21:9 |
| Inner size | 7.6-inch | 8.0-inch |
| Inner ratio | 4:3 (3:4 in portrait) | Nearly square |
The Fold 7 cover was a tall 21:9 slab, close to a normal candy-bar phone. The Fold 8 cover is shorter and wider. The inner panel shrank on the diagonal and got a 4:3 frame Samsung said would waste less space on 16:9 video. That is the geometry YouTube’s home grid now has to guess twice, once folded and once open.
Why the Fold 8 Feed Looks Crooked
A YouTube home row is a set of 16:9 stills packed into a column. On a tall phone that column is one card wide. On a tablet it becomes two or more. Foldables sit in the gap, because the app window changes when the hinge moves.
The Fold 8 makes that gap wider. The cover is no longer a skinny 21:9 strip, and the inner panel is no longer a near-square 8.0-inch sheet. If YouTube still bins the Fold 8 as “phone” or “tablet” from an older Fold, the first thing to slip is the size of those stills.
That also explains why some tiles resize while you scroll. The feed is laying out again as it loads, and the second pass disagrees with the first. It also explains why some phones look fine. A clean install, a different cached width, or a slightly different YouTube build can land on the right bin.
The hinge is the wrong suspect. A hardware fault would not spare other Fold 8 units, and it would not redraw a tile mid-scroll. The weak point is an app that still treats a foldable like a phone that sometimes becomes a tablet, then meets a body Samsung has never shipped before.
Fold 7 Already Broke the YouTube Grid
One Fold 8 owner said a Fold 6 never showed this. That can be true and still miss the generation in between. Fold 7 owners were already arguing about YouTube stills in July 2025, weeks after that phone shipped.
YOUTUBE ON GALAXY FOLDS
- 26 July 2025: A Fold 7 owner reports massive, cutoff YouTube thumbnails on the inner screen. Replies say some apps fail to tell the small screen from the big one, and that killing YouTube helps for a while.
- 30 July 2025: Another Fold 7 thread describes weird, inconsistent thumbnail sizes on the app, including the cover. Clearing cache fixes it for a time, then the fault returns within an hour. One reply says the phone seems confused about tablet mode.
- July 2026: Samsung unveils the Fold 8 at Galaxy Unpacked as a new form factor built around those two aspect ratios.
- August 2026: Fold 8 owners start posting a different YouTube fault, video that freezes while audio keeps playing, often after leaving the app and coming back, and sometimes when unfolding.
- 25 September 2026: That freeze cluster is already on the Korean Samsung forum, with about a dozen comments. The original poster said it hit about half the time. Most names in the thread are Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, with some Fold 8 and Galaxy S26 Ultra reports.
- 11 October 2026: The thumbnail misalignment post goes up on Samsung’s forum, now on both Fold 8 screens.
The freeze is a separate YouTube problem, and it is not the thumbnail bug. It still shows the same pairing: Samsung’s newest Fold line and Google’s video app failing in public, weeks apart, with no patch note that names either fault.
Fold 7 users who saw one giant still instead of a row of four were watching the same class of miss. The app picked a layout for a wide inner window, then failed to hold it. The Fold 8’s new ratios did not invent that miss. They made it obvious on a phone whose ads were about video.
The Cache Wipe Owners Keep Repeating
The workaround making the rounds is the same one Fold 7 owners used. Clear YouTube’s cache and storage, then reinstall the app. There is no confirmation that this holds. On the Fold 7, cache wipes bought less than an hour before the stills went wrong again.
If the Fold 8 behaves like that, a reinstall is a reset of the cached width, not a repair. The next time the app measures the 10:16 cover or the 4:3 inner panel, it can guess again. People whose grid already looks right should leave it alone, because a wipe can also throw away the lucky measurement.
YouTube is a Play Store app. Samsung can file the bug and lean on Google. It cannot ship a One UI patch that redraws another company’s home feed. That is why a support reply that only asks for a recording reads like triage, not a fix date.
Android’s Own Foldable Layout Guide
Google already publishes the rule this grid is breaking. Android’s adaptive-app guide says foldables can expose two different-sized screens, and that folding, unfolding, rotation, or split-screen can change the space an app gets while it is running. The docs say the window size class is dynamic, and the interface should follow it.
Those classes are coarse on purpose. Compact width is under 600 dp, the bin for almost every phone in portrait. Medium covers most tablets in portrait and most large unfolded inners in portrait. Expanded starts at 840 dp. A passport Fold with a 10:16 cover and a 4:3 inner can cross those lines in ways a tall Fold 7 did not.
If YouTube still keys its home row off a single snapshot of width, or off an old “is this a tablet?” flag, the first visible crack is the thumbnail strip. Cards sized for a 21:9 cover will look huge or tiny on 10:16. A two-up inner grid built for a near-square 8.0-inch sheet will sit crooked on 4:3.
That is an app job. Samsung can keep density and zoom defaults sane. Google has to measure the window YouTube actually occupies after each fold and after each scroll.
Samsung’s Reply Stops at a Screen Recording
Samsung has not posted a cause. It has not promised a One UI update, and YouTube has not posted a changelog that names the Fold 8 grid. The only on-the-record step is support’s reply on the forum thread, which asked the owner for a screen recording.
WHAT WE KNOW
- Both screens: Mis-sized and shifted YouTube thumbs have been shown on the cover and the inner display.
- Staff units: Josh Skinner sees it often, on and off; Jeff Springer has seen odd thumbs at times.
- Older Folds: One owner’s Fold 6 was clean; Fold 7 threads in July 2025 already described cutoff and inconsistent YouTube stills.
WHAT IS UNCONFIRMED
- The owner: No public statement yet on whether this is YouTube, One UI, or a cached width on some installs.
- The wipe: Clearing cache and reinstalling is unproven as a lasting repair on the Fold 8.
- The patch: No dated YouTube or Samsung update has been tied to the thumbnail grid.
Samsung sold this body as the Fold you unfold for YouTube. Until the app measures a 10:16 cover and a 4:3 inner as two live windows, some of those phones will keep drawing the home feed at the wrong size. Support is still waiting on a video of it happening.
