NOVUS Raises Eight-Figure Cash for a Slow California Bet
NOVUS closed an eight-figure round to take its €21,300 carbon Lightbike to California, while refusing the fast-scale path that wrecked earlier electric.
NOVUS closed an eight-figure round led by 468 Capital to launch its Lightbike in California in late 2027. The Braunschweig firm is already delivering the carbon two-wheeler in Europe, and it is trying not to scale the way failed electric motorcycle startups did.
The money also funds wider European sales and the NOVUS Two, a cheaper follow-on due in the same late 2027 window. The product on the road now is still a limited, expensive object aimed at people who want a bike as much as a commute.
468 Capital Leads an Eight-Figure Round
The company announced the round on October 19, 2026. 468 Capital, the Berlin and San Francisco firm that already led NOVUS’s seed, led again. The firm lists dual headquarters in Europe and the United States, which matches the California plan on paper.
NOVUS does not publish an exact figure. It describes the raise as eight-figure and double-digit million, and it says the cash goes to European distribution, the NOVUS Two, and a United States debut that starts in California before other states.
The 2024 seed was a mid-seven-figure round, also led by 468 Capital, with general partner Ludwig Ensthaler on the file. Angels had already put in more than €650,000 before that close. The company now says it has more than 30 investors and that no established two-wheeler maker is among them.
Co-founder and chief strategy officer Hannes A. H. Krieger said the point of the new money is not a sudden jump to thousands of bikes. He has watched other vehicle startups try that and stall when a single supplier slipped.
I’ve seen many manufacturers make the same mistake: they try to scale too quickly. They want to produce thousands or tens of thousands of vehicles almost immediately. Then a supply-chain problem emerges, and suddenly thousands of customers are waiting for delayed deliveries.
Hannes A. H. Krieger, Chief Strategy Officer, NOVUS
CEO René Renger, a former Volkswagen designer who worked on the Golf 8 and the ID. Buzz, still talks in larger terms. He has said NOVUS wants to be the world leader in urban light mobility. The near-term plan is smaller output, close contact with early buyers, and a second model before the factory is asked to run like a volume plant.
The Production Bike Weighs 121 kg
NOVUS calls the NOVUS One a Lightbike, a machine it places between an e-bike, a scooter, and a motorcycle. There is no clutch and no conventional gearbox. A hub-mounted drive and a self-supporting carbon frame do the work, and the company says most first-time riders learn the controls in about three minutes.
Series bikes are on the road. A company notice dated April 27, 2026 said the first production Lightbikes were being handed over in Munich as a Founders Edition limited to 100 units. Deliveries have since gone to customers in Germany and Spain, with the United Kingdom, France, and Italy next. The Doerr Group handles German retail. The bike won a German Design Award for motorcycles in 2024, after a German Innovation Award Gold in 2021.
The production numbers are not the ones floated with the early concept. In 2020 the company talked about 75 kg, a 4.3 kWh pack, and a €46,284 sticker. The bike that left the factory is heavier, stronger, and cheaper on the price list.
2020 CONCEPT VS 2026 PRODUCTION
| Spec | 2020 concept | 2026 production |
|---|---|---|
| Weight | 75 kg | 121 kg |
| Top speed | 120 km/h | 130 km/h |
| Peak power | up to 18 kW | 25 kW (33 hp) |
| Battery | 4.3 kWh | 6.2 kWh |
| City range | 100 km | 130 km |
| Price | €46,284 | €21,300 excluding tax |
The extra 121 kg versus 75 kg is 46 kg, a gap the company has not hidden. Peak torque is 430 Nm. The 0 to 50 km/h run is 1.9 seconds. Nominal power is 11 kW, which is the figure that matters for European 125 cc-class rules. A 0 to 80 percent charge is listed at 90 minutes. Three ride modes, over-the-air updates, phone pairing, and keyless start are standard.
Renger has said one early shock was a Bosch quote of about €1.5 million for a motor, after he had already left his job. The team used neighbours with battery and CAD skills, then built an architecture he compares to an e-bike rather than a combustion motorcycle, with no gears, no liquids, and no classic cooling stack. Assembly sits in Braunschweig, next to the wider Volkswagen supply base around Wolfsburg.
Hugo Boss Wove Its Logo Into the Carbon
The cap table is the tell. NOVUS recruited people who have scaled shoes, fashion, software rentals, and cars, and it did not go looking for Honda, Yamaha, or BMW Motorrad money. Krieger has said that in 2023 he and Renger started hunting operators who had already solved pieces of a manufacturing business in other industries.
Eric Bach, former senior vice president of product and chief engineer at Lucid Motors and a former Tesla engineering director, is an investor and board adviser on the vehicle. Martin Hoffmann, who was CFO and co-CEO of the Swiss running brand On and helped take it public, is in as well. Former Mercedes-AMG chief Philipp Schiemer is among the backers. Formula E driver Sophia Flörsch is a shareholder; she has called the Lightbike a vehicle from the future that is already on the road.
The company also lists founders and executives tied to Adidas, Audi, BMW, Chrono24, FINN, Grover, New Balance, Vay, and Xiaomi, plus family offices and Silicon Valley names. Several investors bought a bike first and wrote a cheque after. The NOVUS Club ties shareholders, customers, and partners together on purpose.
The fashion link is physical. NOVUS worked with BOSS, the core brand of Hugo Boss, on a limited Lightbike whose carbon skin carries the BOSS Double B. Cristex and Microtex wove a carbon and basalt hybrid so the motif sits in the cloth rather than as a sticker, then infused it with a cosmetic epoxy. Company posts say trophy bikes went to Jack Draper and Matteo Berrettini around the BOSS Open, and that the licensed BOSS Edition was due on July 29, 2025, after a year of design work that started before the vehicle was certified. Krieger’s line at the time was that Boss lent the startup some brand trust.
That is a consumer-product method. Make a scarce object people want, put familiar names on the tank, then argue that a second, cheaper model can widen the funnel. It is also why the missing motorcycle OEM on the shareholder list is not an accident.
Cake Raised More Than $70 Million
The cautionary file sits in Sweden. Cake, the design-heavy electric motorcycle brand, entered bankruptcy on February 1, 2024. It had raised more than $70 million and sold around 6,000 bikes. Plans at one stage included a Swedish plant budgeted at $25 million with a path toward 20,000 units a year. A funding round fell apart, cash ran out, and the inventory leftover in the United States ended up with a Florida dealer.
Cake has since been bought out of that collapse and has talked up a smaller second life, including a production tie-up with Keeway. The first version of the company is still the example Krieger is steering around: too many models, global distribution, and a factory story that outran the order book.
NOVUS is doing the opposite in public. It builds in one German city. It started with 100 Founders Edition bikes. It is taking UK, French, and Italian deliveries in sequence rather than all at once. Renger’s own advice to hardware founders is blunt. If you want an easy career, he said, do something else. He also tells people to work inside a car or factory company first, because deadlines there cannot be slid.
He has said that after showing an early model at CES in 2019 he got a call from Elon Musk’s secretary on the second day. Attention arrived early. Series metal arrived seven years later.
What Licence Do You Need in California?
In Spain, France, and Italy you can ride the 25 kW God Edition on a car licence, according to NOVUS. In California a two-wheel machine of this speed and power is still a motorcycle, and the highway patrol requires an M-1 endorsement. That split is the quiet problem inside a funding story sold as a straight jump from Germany to the West Coast.
The company can software-limit the same hardware as an L1e bike at 45 km/h or run it as L3e at 130 km/h. In Germany a standard car licence already covers the slow moped-class setup. The faster 11 kW tune fits the A1 box if the rider holds that class, or if the rider adds B196.
WHERE A CAR LICENCE IS ENOUGH
- Spain, France, Italy: NOVUS says the 25 kW God Edition can be ridden on a car licence.
- Germany, slow tune: The 45 km/h L1e setup sits in the moped class that a category B licence already includes.
- Germany, 125 class: Riders can add key number 196 on a car licence after a course of at least nine 90-minute units, four of theory and five of practice, with no extra test, if they are at least 25 and have held class B for five years. It is valid only inside Germany. Nominal 11 kW on a 121 kg bike is 0.0909 kW/kg, under the 0.1 kW/kg cap.
- California: The California Highway Patrol says two-wheeled motorcycles require an M-1 endorsement. A motor-driven cycle still needs M-1 on two wheels. A moped under those rules is a far slower, weaker device than a 33 hp bike with an 130 km/h top speed. Getting M-1 means a written exam and a riding test, or an approved novice course, and extra training if the rider is under 21.
Krieger has said hundreds of European test rides pulled in people who did not see themselves as motorcycle riders, because an e-bike felt slow, a scooter felt dull, and a conventional motorcycle felt heavy. During the 2024 seed raise the company said more than 45 percent of pre-orders, and more than 400 people on a DACH test-ride list, were not motorcyclists. That pitch is easier to keep in countries where a car licence, or a short B196 course, opens the throttle. It is harder to keep in a state that still treats the Lightbike as a motorcycle.
The terms page already quotes a $150 United States reservation fee beside the €150 European fee, so NOVUS is taking American names before the 2027 launch. Those customers will still need M-1 before they ride on California streets.
The Founders Edition Sells Equity With the Bike
The first 100 buyers are not only customers. They split 1 percent of Renger’s shares. The Founders Edition starts at €21,300 excluding tax, which is the working price, down from the €46,284 concept figure. Configurations run into the six figures on paper, and each bike is built to order.
1% of my shares will be split between them.
René Renger, CEO and Founder, NOVUS
Slots are rationed with cash. The company’s terms offer deposits of 3,000 or 15,000 euros, both credited to the price, with the larger cheque jumping the production queue. The rest is due when NOVUS says the bike is ready. Because each Lightbike is made to a customer’s specification, the firm says the usual consumer withdrawal right does not apply after configuration is approved.
That structure fits a 100-unit run. It does not yet prove a factory that can feed California dealers, employer schemes, and a second model at once. Krieger has pointed to German company-car style mobility perks as a later channel. Retail partners in big cities are supposed to offer test rides; elsewhere NOVUS will sell direct and handle delivery and service itself.
NOVUS Two Is the Volume Vehicle
The homepage already invites interest in the NOVUS Two. Production of that cheaper, higher-volume model is scheduled to begin in late 2027, the same window as the California start. Renger has also talked about using the lightweight architecture on four-wheel urban vehicles and about software that adapts to a rider, and he has boxed those as later ambitions, not features on the current bike.
FROM SKETCH TO THE 2027 WINDOW
- About 2010: Renger starts sketching a lightweight electric two-wheeler as a student project.
- 2019: He founds NOVUS in Braunschweig and shows an early model at CES.
- March 2024: 468 Capital leads a mid-seven-figure seed to pay for EU approval and series tooling.
- July 29, 2025: NOVUS and BOSS schedule the licensed BOSS Edition after weaving the Double B into carbon.
- April 27, 2026: The company says the first series Founders Edition bikes are being delivered in Munich.
- October 19, 2026: 468 Capital leads an eight-figure round for Europe, the NOVUS Two, and the United States.
- Late 2027: California sales are due to start, and production of the cheaper NOVUS Two is due to begin.
The round buys time, not a finished American business. California still wants an M-1 card, the production bike is 46 kg heavier than the 2020 sketch, and the volume product is a year out. The company is already taking NOVUS Two names on its site for that late 2027 slot, which is when the slow German bet either turns into a market or stays a 100-bike club with a famous carbon hole in the frame.
