Mercedes Bets Its Bestselling GLC on Electric First
The 2027 GLC Electric puts Mercedes’ volume SUV on 800-volt hardware at $64,950, while a $78,775 Pinnacle car and BMW’s 434-mile iX3 test the bet.
The 2027 Mercedes-Benz GLC Electric starts at $64,950 including destination and is rated up to 350 miles. Mercedes-Benz USA lists the launch model as the GLC 400 4MATIC Electric at a $63,500 MSRP plus a $1,450 delivery charge, and says the SUV arrives at U.S. dealerships in fall 2026.
This is the electric take on the company’s volume SUV, built as an EV first rather than as a copy of a gasoline GLC. Mercedes is wagering that the familiar name will move 800-volt hardware in numbers the EQE and EQS SUVs never did.
Mercedes Put Its Bestseller on Electric Hardware First
Mathias Geisen, the board member for sales and marketing, has called the GLC Mercedes-Benz’s most popular model and the segment leader worldwide for years. When German orders opened on October 29, 2025, the company set a list price of 71,281 euros and offered private leases from 475 euros a month, pitching a comparable price to the combustion models still in the showroom.
Following the outstanding start of the new CLA, demand for the new all-electric GLC is now also significantly exceeding our expectations.
Mathias Geisen, Member of the Board of Management, Mercedes-Benz Group AG, January 12, 2026 sales briefing
That line landed after a year in which Mercedes-Benz Cars delivered 1,800,800 vehicles, down 9 percent, and passenger-car battery EVs fell 9% to 168,800. Group sales were 2,160,000, down 10 percent. U.S. customer deliveries still rose 1 percent to 303,200, even as tariffs and stock management cut reported U.S. group volume.
The CLA, on the compact MMA platform, was the first electric-first nameplate. The GLC sits on Mercedes’ mid-size electric platform and is sold as a dedicated battery SUV, with a combustion sibling kept on a separate floor. Ola Källenius, chairman of Mercedes-Benz Group AG, has described 2025-2027 as the company’s biggest product and tech launch run, with MB.OS as the shared software layer across new electric and combustion cars.
On October 19, 2026, Mercedes-Benz Korea put the electric CLA and GLC on sale together. Shirin Emeera, chief executive of Mercedes-Benz Korea, called the pair the first cars on the new purpose-built electric platforms. The company said the electric GLC had drawn more than 2,500 preorders since July, against about 1,000 for the CLA since September. Local deliveries are due in mid-November 2026.
Dual Motors and a Two-Speed Gearbox Do the Quiet Work
U.S. cars come only as the GLC 400 4MATIC Electric at launch. Dual permanently excited motors make 483 hp and 590 lb-ft, and Mercedes estimates 4.2 seconds to 60 mph with a 130 mph limiter. That is 0.2 seconds slower than the gasoline AMG GLC 53 4MATIC+, and it is the quickest electric SUV Mercedes currently sells, sitting under the EQE and EQS SUVs on the price ladder.
Curb weight is 5,578 pounds. The wheelbase stretches to 117 inches, 3.3 inches longer than the combustion GLC, and Mercedes quotes battery-to-wheel efficiency of 93 percent on long runs. A week of mixed driving in a Pinnacle test car returned 3.3 miles per kWh, close enough to the window-sticker math that the EPA figures are not theater.
THE 800-VOLT KIT IN THE GLC 400
- The pack: A nickel-manganese-cobalt lithium-ion battery with 94 kWh of usable energy, on an 800-volt system with silicon-carbide inverters.
- The rear gearbox: A two-speed unit (11:1 and 5:1) in the rear drive, carried over in concept from the electric CLA, so hard launches and highway cruising are not a single-gear compromise.
- The front disconnect: The front motor drops out when extra traction is not needed, leaving the SUV in rear drive for efficiency.
- The charge ports: A native NACS inlet rated at 330 kW DC and a separate J1772 AC inlet at 11.5 kW, with a converter so 400-volt stations still work.
- The brakes: A one-box module that favors regen up to 300 kW; Mercedes says the hydraulic discs stay unused in over 99 percent of stops, and the old phantom pedal travel is gone on this car.
Mercedes quotes 22 minutes for a 10 to 80 percent DC charge and 10 hours for a 0 to 100 percent AC fill. Optional AIRMATIC air springs and 4.5-degree rear-axle steering, grouped in the $2,900 Agility & Comfort Package on the Pinnacle car, cut the wall-to-wall turning circle from 39.7 feet to 36.7 feet. At a calm pace the air and the rear steer blend; push hard and the body starts to wilt, which is the trade the chassis is tuned for. Towing is rated at 5,291 pounds braked, and a Terrain program can alter drive, steering, and brakes on dirt or gravel.
The GLC 400’s 350-Mile Rating Meets a Longer iX3
On low-rolling-resistance tires the EPA figure is 350 miles and 123/115/119 MPGe. All-season tires, the set most buyers will actually take, drop that to 331 miles and 106/98/102 MPGe. Drag is a Cd of 0.26, a hair behind the EQE SUV’s 0.25, yet the GLC still beats that older electric SUV where it counts. The EQE 320 4MATIC SUV, with a 90.5 kWh pack, is EPA-rated at 253 miles, 78 miles short of the GLC’s all-season number.
The car that actually crowds this price is BMW’s iX3 50 xDrive, the first Neue Klasse model in the United States. BMW of North America set a $61,500 MSRP plus $1,350 destination ($62,850 drive-away) and up to 434 miles of EPA range on a no-cost 20-inch summer tire pack. Standard 20-inch all-seasons are 383 miles. Peak DC is 400 kW, 10 to 80 percent is 21 minutes, and BMW says 185 miles can be added in 10 minutes. U.S. iX3 deliveries were set for September 25, 2026, so that SUV is already in stores while the GLC is still in its fall arrival window.
Audi’s 2027 Q6 e-tron quattro starts at $64,500 plus $1,395 destination ($65,895) and is EPA-rated at 325 miles with 19-inch wheels, with 456 hp and a 4.9-second 0-60. The GLC undercuts that dest-included sticker by $945 and leads it on the EPA sheet, then trails the iX3 on both price and range.
HOW THE GLC 400 STACKS UP IN U.S. STORES
| Model | Price incl. dest. | EPA range | Peak DC / 10-80% |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mercedes-Benz GLC 400 4MATIC Electric | $64,950 | 350 mi (331 all-season) | 330 kW / 22 min |
| BMW iX3 50 xDrive | $62,850 | 434 mi (383 all-season) | 400 kW / 21 min |
| Audi Q6 e-tron quattro | $65,895 | 325 mi (19-inch) | not quoted here / about 21 min |
| Mercedes-Benz EQE 320 4MATIC SUV | older lineup | 253 mi | 400-volt-class hardware |
Volvo’s EX60 P10 posts nearly the same range as the GLC in all-wheel-drive form and starts a few thousand dollars lower as a rear-drive base car. Genesis GV60 and Rivian R2 undercut this group on price, with a sharper drive or real off-road hardware, and they sit outside the traditional luxury peer set Mercedes wants the GLC to own.
What a Pinnacle GLC Electric Costs to Feel Finished
The $64,950 dest-included sticker is in line with the Q6 and about $2,100 above the iX3. The GLC that actually feels like a Mercedes in the test fleet was a Pinnacle car with an as-tested price of $78,775, $13,825 above that dest-included start.
That car wore leather, wood trim, the $2,900 air-spring and rear-steer pack, and MB.Drive Assist Pro prepaid for three years at $3,950, plus convenience items. U.S. specification still lists MB.DRIVE ASSIST PRO as a digital extra available at a later date, after the lawyers sign off on hands-free driving on city streets and highways. At launch the assist suite is the modern baseline: lane keeping, blind-spot assist, DISTRONIC, and a reversing camera, with parking and 360-camera extras on the sheet.
Standard U.S. kit is not bare. Twenty-inch wheels, a fixed glass panoramic roof with infrared film, a nappa steering wheel, heated power front seats, dual-zone climate with pre-entry cooling, Keyless-Go flush handles, dual wireless phone pads, and seven years of MBUX Navigation with Electric Intelligence are on the truck. Exclusive trim adds the lit grille panel, SKY CONTROL for the roof, the 14-inch passenger display, and 64-color ambient lighting. Pinnacle piles on DIGITAL LIGHT, a 15-speaker Burmester 3D system, and ENERGIZING air control. Pinnacle Plus is where the seamless 39.1-inch Hyperscreen, 19-speaker 4D Burmester, ventilated massage seats, and heated rears land.
Even at $78,775, stretches of the cabin still read like they belong on the base car. That is the bill for making this EV feel finished, and it is the part of the wager a GLC 300 owner will notice first.
The Light-Up Grille Is an Extra Most Owners Will Skip
Mercedes calls the new face “elevated design,” a brand-defining illuminated and animated chrome shield that is meant to replace the old EQ blankness. On the Pinnacle test car the panel lit up like a club fixture. The glow is hard to see in daylight, and the illuminated panel is not standard, so a lot of owners will live with a large, empty shield on a car that barely needs cooling.
The rest of the body is cleaner than that face. The sides step out from the greenhouse, the proportions are tighter than the blob-like EQE and EQS SUVs, and the star-shaped lamps that are spreading across the lineup recede a little against the shield. Online argument about this car keeps landing on that grille and on the glass dashboard, not on the two-speed gearbox or the 330 kW plug. For a volume SUV that is supposed to feel ordinary, the thing people fight about is the costume.
SKY CONTROL can darken the panoramic roof in separate segments, and some specs add a star pattern in the glass at night. AMG Line adds 20-inch wheels, a chrome splitter, and a star-pattern puddle show; AMG Line Plus brings 21-inch wheels, a black spoiler lip, and red MANUFAKTUR belts. Those packs dress the same shield. They do not make it smaller.
Screens Fill a Cabin That Still Uses Hard Plastic
Standard U.S. cars get a 10.25-inch driver display, a 14-inch center touchscreen, and a 14-inch digital trim panel, running fourth-generation MBUX on MB.OS. The optional Hyperscreen is a single 39.1-inch pane, the largest screen Mercedes has put in a production car. The passenger pane is easy to ignore. The center layout still uses a zero-layer of widgets over a map, and the cluster still paints colorful gauges that follow the ambient lighting. The operating system is the point: Mercedes wants features added later by update, because the first-drive software does not yet feel like a new product.
Hard plastics show up in places a $78,775 car should have left behind, and the seat-adjustment switches look borrowed from a cheaper model. Mercedes now sells a Vegan Society-certified interior pack, and high-end seats with massage and PRE-SAFE Impulse Side sit in Pinnacle Plus. The gap between those materials and the base touch-points is wide.
The cabin does the practical work. Front headroom is 40.9 inches and rear is 40.3; front legroom is 41.3 inches and rear is 40 inches, which in testing was 2.6 inches more in the second row than an Audi Q6 e-tron or Volvo EX60. Trunk volume is 20.1 cubic feet behind the seats and 61.4 with them folded, plus a 4.5-cubic-foot frunk that is large for this class. Europe quotes 570 liters, 1,740 liters folded, and 128 liters up front, with the frunk lid able to pop electrically. Rear passengers gain space from that 3.3-inch wheelbase stretch, which is the quiet win in a segment that still sells on the second row.
Order Books Already Run Into Late 2026
By January 12, 2026, Mercedes said electric GLC order books were already filled well into the second half of 2026. That window is now. U.S. cars are still described as a fall 2026 dealer arrival, Korea is taking mid-November deliveries, and extra drive units and battery sizes are promised after the 400. The commercial side of the wager is not theoretical. The product side still asks a GLC buyer to accept a lit shield, a wall of glass, and a long options list before the cabin matches the star on the hood.
HOW THE ELECTRIC GLC GOT TO MARKET
- September 7, 2025: World premiere of the electric GLC at IAA in Munich, billed as the first model in a new family.
- October 29, 2025: German sales open at 71,281 euros for the GLC 400 4MATIC, with online configuration already live across most of Europe.
- January 12, 2026: Geisen says demand exceeds the company’s forecast and that order books run well into the second half of 2026.
- September 9, 2026: Mercedes-Benz USA posts EPA figures of 350 and 331 miles and the $63,500 U.S. MSRP.
- September 25, 2026: BMW begins U.S. iX3 50 xDrive deliveries at $62,850 including destination, with a 434-mile EPA ceiling.
- Fall 2026: Mercedes schedules U.S. dealer arrival for the GLC 400 4MATIC Electric.
- October 19, 2026: Mercedes-Benz Korea launches the electric CLA and GLC, citing more than 2,500 GLC preorders since July.
- Mid-November 2026: Korean customer deliveries of the launch cars are due to begin.
U.S. stores are due to get the GLC 400 4MATIC Electric in fall 2026, in the same season BMW has already started iX3 deliveries. Mercedes is asking GLC money for an EV that still needs a long options list before the cabin matches the badge.
