Amazon Bets Blade Runner 2099 Can Pay After 2049
Prime Video’s Blade Runner 2099 trailer stakes Yeoh, Schafer, and a replicant-run Los Angeles against the franchise’s weak theatrical sequel math.
Prime Video dropped the full Blade Runner 2099 trailer at New York Comic-Con on October 10, 2026. All eight episodes land together on November 25, 2026. Michelle Yeoh and Hunter Schafer lead a Los Angeles the films never quite dared to show, one where the replicants already won.
That is the wager. After Blade Runner 2049 missed the theatrical number Alcon Entertainment’s founders had called a win, Amazon is trying the franchise as a binge, with new faces and a city that no longer belongs to people.
A Full Trailer and Four New Clips
The streamer first showed a teaser on July 24, 2026, in Hall H at San Diego Comic-Con. The New York panel went further. Yeoh, Schafer, showrunner Silka Luisa, series regulars Dimitri Abold, Lewis Gribben and Matthew Needham, and Alcon co-founders Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson walked through four unseen clips, then the finished trailer.
The official logline, from Amazon MGM Studios and Alcon Television, is blunt. Fifty years after Blade Runner 2049, Los Angeles has been reborn, just not by humanity. Cora, a fugitive in a last bid to stop running, takes on one last identity: a Blade Runner. Forced to partner with Olwen, a replicant days from dying, she hunts a runaway whose secret could collapse a fragile city.
WHAT THE NYCC PANEL PUT ON STAGE
- The hunt: Olwen is assigned to root out human insurgents, Luisa said, while she is really looking for a missing Blade Runner named Merrick.
- The cover: Schafer said Cora goes undercover with the LAPD after her work is raided, to protect a little brother.
- The clock: Yeoh said Olwen knows time is running out and does not like to leave things unfinished.
- The look: Luisa said 2099 needed a third visual language after the 1982 film and 2049, built on 360-degree sets with lights and graphics in the walls.
Jonathan van Tulleken, who directed Shogun, directed the first two episodes and is also an executive producer. Those hours set the show’s look. Luisa created the series and showruns it, after Shining Girls. The credit list still carries Ridley Scott, 2049 co-writer Michael Green, and Scott Free producers David W. Zucker and Clayton Krueger.
Blade Runner 2049 Stopped at $259.7 Million
The theatrical sequel is why this series exists as television. Denis Villeneuve’s 164-minute film opened in the United States on October 6, 2017, in 4,058 theaters, to $32.8 million. It closed with $92.1 million in North America and $167.6 million abroad, a worldwide box office of $259.7 million against a $185 million production budget, plus U.S. disc sales of about $30.4 million.
On the eve of that release, Kosove and Johnson said 2049 needed $400 million worldwide to be a win. It finished about $140 million short of that line. The movie won Oscars for cinematography and visual effects. It did not become the franchise engine Alcon had tried to build.
THE TWO WAGERS
| Title | Blade Runner 2049 | Blade Runner 2099 |
|---|---|---|
| Form | 164-minute theatrical film | Eight-episode limited series |
| U.S. date | October 6, 2017 | November 25, 2026 |
| Reach | $259.7 million worldwide at the box office | All episodes, more than 240 countries on Prime Video |
| Leads | Ryan Gosling and Harrison Ford | Michelle Yeoh and Hunter Schafer |
| Production budget | $185 million | Not disclosed |
Amazon is not asking 2099 to clear a theater gross. It is asking the series to behave like an event film on a Tuesday night, then keep both older movies for rent and sale on the same service. That is a cheaper kind of second chance than another $185 million shoot, and it still needs people to finish eight hours of a franchise that has never been easy to sell.
Humans Lost the Replicant Uprising
Luisa has been saying the quiet part since the summer press run, and she said it again in New York. Between 2049 and 2099 there was a war. The creations won.
We are 50 years after 2049, and bad news. The worst has happened. The replicant uprising that has been bubbling up in the films has taken place, and humans have lost. 2099 is taking place at a junction point when one species is ending and a new one is rising.
Silka Luisa, showrunner, New York Comic-Con panel
She has described replicants as the city’s power brokers and humans as second-class. Blade Runners in this version of Los Angeles hunt people who still fight back. The badge that used to protect the human order now polices it from the other side.
Johnson told the room that Luisa first brought him that idea several years ago, and that it felt less like tomorrow than like now. “Great science fiction isn’t actually about the future; it’s about the present,” he said, tying the show to a year in which artificial intelligence is no longer a thought experiment. Kosove called the undercover turn, a human pretending to be a replicant beside a replicant whose time is almost up, the core of the series, with clues that reach back through both films and before the first one.
The trailer’s loudest line of travel online was that premise, not a chase. People who already loved 2049’s cold palaces are also treating Amazon’s custody of this world as a risk. The films made their names by withholding. A streaming drop does the opposite. That tension is the show’s real weather, before anyone has seen episode one.
Olwen Has Days Left, Cora Has a Cover
Yeoh plays Olwen, a replicant Blade Runner in the last days of a fixed lifespan. Luisa has compared that arc to Roy Batty’s fight for more life in the 1982 film, told from the hunter’s chair this time. The body even quotes Batty. In a clip shown to the room, Olwen’s nail beds run blue, a marker Luisa said they took from the gnarly close-ups of Rutger Hauer’s hands, so the audience never forgets the clock while Yeoh still looks powerful.
“She knows the time is running out, and she’s a character that doesn’t like to leave things unfinished,” Yeoh said. Officially Olwen is sweeping up human holdouts. In fact she is hunting Merrick, a colleague who vanished, which Luisa said had not happened before. “The mystery is asking why Merrick, someone who fought and sacrificed for all this power, is now turning his back and walking away from it. And the question is for what?”
Schafer’s Cora is the human in the costume. “More or less a fugitive in hiding from LAPD Blade Runners,” Schafer told the panel. “Her work gets raided, and she’s gotta go on the run and make sure she protects her little brother, and ultimately undergo this mission where she goes undercover as a Blade Runner with LAPD.” Kosove boiled the pairing down to a human pretending to be a replicant and a replicant who is almost out of days, and what they do to each other.
That is also the commercial pitch. 2049 asked a mass audience to sit with Ryan Gosling’s quiet K and Harrison Ford’s buried Deckard for nearly three hours, and a lot of that audience stayed home. Yeoh arrives with the reach she earned after Everything Everywhere All at Once. Schafer arrives with a younger audience from Euphoria. Amazon is betting those two can pull people into a world the last movie could not.
Needham, in the supporting company with Tom Burke, Sheila Atim, Daniel Rigby, Johnny Harris, Amy Lennox, Katelyn Rose Downey and Maurizio Lombardi, called it a detective story with a philosophical argument stuffed inside. Abold and Gribben are billed as series regulars beside the two leads. Luisa has said the story sits far enough ahead that the film characters are gone.
Ridley Scott Says He Let the Rights Go
Prime Video still lists Scott as an executive producer. Luisa has talked about unpacking visual choices with him and calling him the visual author of Blade Runner. The press notes put him in the same block as Kosove, Johnson, Green, Cynthia Yorkin, Frank Giustra, Isa Dick Hackett, Tom Spezialy and van Tulleken.
Scott’s own account, from late August, is colder. He is not directing this, and he has described the rights as something that slipped.
I can’t blame my lawyers and my agents at that time, but somehow we let Blade Runner go. And when you’re not the author of the actual written word, you don’t have a piece.
Ridley Scott, director of Blade Runner, to the Los Angeles Times
Those two facts can sit together. A producing credit is not the same thing as control of the next sentence. Alcon has held the franchise since the long run-up to 2049, and Kosove and Johnson were the executives on the New York stage, not Scott. The original 1982 film adapted Philip K. Dick. Scott painted the weather. The people writing 2099 still wanted his blessing on canon points. The check, and the series order, sit with Amazon and Alcon.
For a streamer, the name on the slate still does work. For a director who has spent forty years watching other people extend his rain-soaked Los Angeles, the quote is the cost of never owning the underlying pages. The bet on 2099 does not need him on set. It does need his world to still mean something when the pause button is easy to hit.
A Red-Light District That Sells Experience
The clips that will actually test the wager are smaller than the uprising. Luisa described a red-light district that does not sell sex. It sells human experience to replicants who already run the city and still cannot get the lives they were copied from.
“Replicants are in control, but they are made in our likeness. So they still have desires, and they still want more than what they’ve been given,” she said. “Replicants still can’t get pregnant. They can’t get old. They still want more than what they’ve been given, and they see all these humans out there, and they have a life that they still can’t have.”
One clip, as described from the panel, puts a prosthetic belly and a wailing stand-in infant in a replicant’s arms. That is the show’s specimen: not a spinner chase, a purchased memory of being mortal. The original film watched replicants beg for more years. 2049 asked whether a built life could hold a soul. 2099, if Luisa means what she said, watches the winners of that war try to buy the parts of humanity the factory never installed.
She has also talked about a hotter, stickier Los Angeles than 2049’s orange dust, because the series is “about a birth,” of a city and a society, “hot, sticky, bright, chaotic.” That is a choice that will split people who wanted another slow cathedral of a movie. Some of the first public reaction to the trailer already treated the extra heat as a warning. The counter is sitting in those sets she described, the weathered desks and leftover cans, a fake world that looks lived in rather than designed for a still.
When Does Blade Runner 2099 Premiere on Prime Video?
The date is fixed. All eight episodes premiere November 25, 2026, exclusively on Prime Video in more than 240 countries and territories, in one drop. Ahead of that, Amazon is selling and renting the 1982 Blade Runner and 2049 on the same app. Luisa has called the run a complete story, with a beginning, a middle and an end, closer to a long movie than to an open-ended cop show.
THE ROAD TO NOVEMBER 25
- 1982: Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner opens, adapted from Philip K. Dick, and spends years becoming the film people argue about.
- October 6, 2017: Blade Runner 2049 opens wide in the United States, then stalls well short of Alcon’s $400 million win line.
- July 24, 2026: Prime Video unveils the first 2099 teaser in Hall H at San Diego Comic-Con and locks the November date.
- October 10, 2026: The full trailer and four clips debut on the Empire Stage at New York Comic-Con.
- November 25, 2026: All eight episodes go live at once.
Eight hours is the extra room Luisa wanted for a replicant who can name the day she dies, and for a human who has already misplaced herself inside a cover. It is also how a streamer turns a cult into a queue. The films never found a Saturday-night crowd large enough to match their budgets. The series asks for a holiday week instead, and for two actors the last sequel did not have, in a city the last sequel did not let the replicants keep.
Whether that holds the old ambiguity or sands it down is the part no trailer can settle. The episodes arrive together on November 25. After that the bet is with whoever finishes them.
