The $299 Apple TV 4K Is a HomePod Theater Hub
The new Apple TV 4K costs $299 as Apple turns the box into a four-speaker HomePod theater hub that older models cannot match.
Apple’s new Apple TV 4K costs $299 and ships on November 13. Pair it with four HomePod mini 2 speakers at $149 each and the living-room stack hits $895.
Siri AI also arrives as a beta on Apple TV 4K models from the 2nd generation on, so the extra money buys hardware older boxes never get: far-field mics, an A19 chip, and four-speaker HomePod sound.
Four HomePod mini 2 Speakers Turn a $299 Box Into an $895 Room
Bob Borchers, Apple’s vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing, did not sell the 4th-generation box as a cheaper way to stream Netflix. He called it the company’s “most immersive home theater experience yet,” then pointed at HomePod, HomeView, HomePod mini 2, and Apple Home Collection in the same breath.
The new Apple TV 4K is our most immersive home theater experience yet. With Siri AI, finding something to watch becomes a full-screen, conversational experience, and with built-in far-field microphones, it’s completely hands-free. Pair it with HomePod for the best surround sound setup we’ve ever offered, and it makes managing your Apple Home accessories easier than ever.

That surround mode is the feature a 2022 Apple TV cannot pick up in software. Apple’s footnote is narrow: four HomePod (2nd generation) or HomePod mini 2 speakers in matching pairs, front and rear, paired with Apple TV 4K (4th generation) on the latest tvOS. The original HomePod mini is out. Mixed pairs in the same row are out. The new box is the controller that hears where each speaker sits and sets timing and levels for the room.
Apple opened pre-orders on October 13 in the United States and 29 other countries and regions. The cheapest way into that four-speaker surround sound with HomePod mini 2 is four $149 speakers plus the $299 box.
THE $895 FOUR-SPEAKER STACK
| Setup | Speaker cost | Apple TV 4K | Total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Four HomePod mini 2 | $596 | $299 | $895 |
| Two HomePod (2nd gen) and two mini 2 | $996 | $299 | $1,295 |
| Four HomePod (2nd generation) | $1,396 | $299 | $1,695 |
HomePod mini 2 itself is $20 above the $129 price Apple had on the outgoing mini after June, and it ships earlier than the TV, on October 30, in pink, green, blue, white, and midnight. You can have four new speakers in the room before the box that makes them a theater even exists.
The Living-Room Box Already Jumped Twice This Year
The $299 tag is the third Apple TV price of 2026. Before June, the 3rd-generation model was $129 for 64GB and $149 for 128GB with Ethernet. On June 25, Apple moved those to $199 and $249 and raised HomePod mini from $99 to $129 and HomePod from $299 to $349.
Apple said then that AI data centers had created an “extraordinary surge” in demand for memory and storage, and that it had “never seen a component price increase this much, this quickly.” The same squeeze showed up across Macs and iPads in the June memory price hike on Apple products, and some shops still offered a MacBook Air at its pre-hike price after list prices moved. The living-room box took the steepest percentage hit then, and the 4th generation finishes the job by killing the 64GB SKU.
APPLE TV 4K PRICE MOVES IN 2026
- 2022: Apple introduces Apple TV 4K (3rd generation) at $129 for 64GB and $149 for 128GB with Ethernet.
- June 25, 2026: Those prices rise to $199 and $249 as Apple passes through memory and storage costs.
- October 13, 2026: Apple announces the 4th generation at $299, 128GB only, with Wi-Fi 7 and Ethernet in the single SKU.
- October 30, 2026: HomePod mini 2 reaches stores at $149.
- November 13, 2026: The 4th-generation Apple TV 4K reaches stores, with a six-month plan at $49.83 a month through Apple Card.
From the old $129 Wi-Fi box to $299 is more than a doubling. From the June 128GB price of $249, the new model adds $50 and drops the cheaper tier. There is no 64GB door left.
What the A19 Chip and Built-In Mics Add
The A19 chip, the same family that arrived in iPhone 17, is Apple’s answer to anyone who still has a 2022 box on the credenza. Apple says it delivers up to 50 percent faster CPU performance and up to twice the GPU performance of the previous generation, with snappier menus and smoother motion. A dedicated AV1 decoder is new, and Apple says it streams high-quality video while using less bandwidth.
The chassis is smaller and lighter than the 3rd generation: 1.22 inches high, 3.67 inches square, and 7.6 ounces (217 grams). Storage is a single 128GB configuration. Connectivity is the quiet upgrade people who keep a crowded Wi-Fi net will notice: Wi-Fi 7 with 2×2 MIMO, Bluetooth 6, Thread, HDMI 2.1, and Gigabit Ethernet, plus an IR receiver. The HDMI cable is sold separately.
Three far-field microphones with voice isolation sit in the box, so you can say “Siri” or “Hey Siri” without touching the remote, even while a show is playing. Echo cancellation is supposed to pull a voice out of the soundtrack. That hands-free path is the hardware older Apple TVs lack. Far-field listening is also limited by language: Apple lists Mandarin Chinese, Dutch, English, Finnish, French, German, Hebrew, Norwegian, and Swedish when that language is set as the primary tvOS language.
On paper this is a faster, lighter streamer with a better radio. In a house that never planned to talk to the TV from the kitchen, it is still a $299 way to open apps.
Siri AI Lands on the Apple TV You Already Own
The feature Apple put in the headline is not locked to the new silicon. Apple said Siri AI is available as a beta on Apple TV 4K (2nd generation or later) in tvOS 27.2. At launch that English-language beta covers the United States, Australia, Canada, India, New Zealand, Singapore, South Africa, and the United Kingdom.
The assistant is the rebuilt Siri tied to Apple Intelligence. On the TV it becomes a full-screen search: ask which Apple TV shows won Emmys this year and poster art from the Apple TV app fills the display, with follow-on rows such as more award-winning comedies. Mid-show, questions such as “Where was Pluribus filmed?” or whether a scene is right for a 15-year-old land in a small overlay. With a paired Apple Intelligence iPhone, it can take a personal-context request like “Play the show Alinda recommended.”
The catch is not the 4th-generation chip. The home owner in the Home app needs an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone or iPad on the latest software, with Siri AI turned on in a supported language. Personal-context requests need that paired device. Siri AI is not initially available in the EU on iOS or iPadOS, and some cloud features carry daily limits, with paid expanded access later. Apple TV HD and the first Apple TV 4K are left out.
So the software pitch works on a 2021 or 2022 Apple TV 4K. What those older boxes still cannot do is hear you from across the room without the remote, decode AV1 on a dedicated block, join Wi-Fi 7, or drive four HomePod mini 2 speakers as a calibrated surround set.
Buy the Siri Remote and Keep Your Current Box
The new Siri Remote keeps the clickpad shape and adds two find-it tricks. Find My with Precision Finding can walk you to the remote, and a speaker in the remote can play a sound. Apple is selling that remote on its own, and it works with Apple TV HD and every Apple TV 4K.
The fine print splits those tricks. Find My support already exists on Siri Remote (2nd generation or later). Playing a sound is exclusive to the newest remote. Precision Finding needs the 4th-generation remote paired with iPhone Duo, iPhone Air, or iPhone 17 or later, excluding iPhone 17e, on the latest iOS, and availability varies by region. A household on iPhone 16 gets a beep, not a walking path.
If the remote is the irritation, Apple has unbundled it. The $299 box is not required to stop crawling behind the sofa. The box is required if you want the mics in the puck, the A19, and the four-speaker mode.
Roku Ultra and Google TV Streamer Still Sit Near $150
A streaming box that still runs 4K apps on a 2022 A15 chip does not need a phone-class GPU. The $299 ask is for the microphones, the AV1 block, Wi-Fi 7, and the right to use four HomePod mini 2 speakers as a theater. That is a short list if you never planned to buy the speakers, and it is why the price reads as a cash grab in mixed-phone houses that just want HBO and YouTube to open fast.
Rivals spent 2026 raising prices too, just not into the same bracket. Google’s TV Streamer lists at $149.99 after a September move from $99.99. Roku lifted the Ultra to $149.99 in July, from $99.99. Amazon’s Fire TV Cube lists at $199.99 and already has built-in mics for Alexa. None of those boxes will run Apple’s four-speaker HomePod mode. They also do not need an iPhone 17 in the building to find a remote.
FLAGSHIP STREAMING BOXES AT LIST PRICE
| Box | List price | Hands-free mics | Four-speaker HomePod mode |
|---|---|---|---|
| Apple TV 4K (4th generation) | $299 | Yes, three far-field mics | Yes, with matching HomePod pairs |
| Google TV Streamer (4K) | $149.99 | No | No |
| Roku Ultra | $149.99 | No | No |
| Fire TV Cube | $199.99 | Yes, Alexa | No |
In a house split between iPhone and Android, the Apple TV’s best new tricks lean on Apple’s own phones, a HomePod stack, or both. The $150 class still does the job the old $129 Apple TV was built for: put 4K apps on a dumb screen.
Matching Pairs Decide Who Gets Apple Surround
The people who will pay $299 without a wince already live inside Apple’s rooms. They want Siri to dim lights and describe the doorbell camera without pausing the match. They will put two HomePod mini 2 speakers in front of the TV and two behind the couch, and they will let the 4th-generation box measure the space. For them the box is a $299 tax on an $895 (or $1,295, or $1,695) theater, and the A19 and Wi-Fi 7 ride along.
WHO THE $299 BOX IS FOR
- Four new speakers: You are buying HomePod mini 2 or HomePod (2nd generation) in matching front and rear pairs and need the 4th-generation Apple TV as the brain.
- Hands-free Siri at the TV: You want to talk to the set from the sofa without a HomePod nearby and without holding the remote.
- A lost-remote habit plus a new iPhone: Precision Finding is worth the new remote only if the phone is an iPhone Duo, iPhone Air, or iPhone 17 or later, excluding iPhone 17e.
- Stay on the 2022 box: You mainly want Siri AI, and a 2nd- or 3rd-generation Apple TV 4K will get the tvOS 27.2 beta.
HomePod mini 2 reaches stores on October 30. The box that can turn four of them into a theater shows up on November 13.
Frequently Asked Questions
What Comes in the Apple TV 4K Box?
Apple ships Apple TV 4K (4th generation), Siri Remote (4th generation), a power cord, and documentation. An HDMI cable is sold separately, and 4K HDR playback still needs a 4K HDR television.
Can Original HomePod mini Speakers Do Four-Speaker Surround?
No. Apple’s home-theater footnote names HomePod (2nd generation) or HomePod mini 2 in matching front and rear pairs, paired with Apple TV 4K (4th generation) on the latest software. The first HomePod mini is not on that list.
Does Precision Finding Work on iPhone 16?
No. Precision Finding on the 4th-generation Siri Remote works with iPhone Duo, iPhone Air, or iPhone 17 or later, excluding iPhone 17e. Older iPhones can still use Find My on 2nd-generation and later remotes, and only the newest remote can play a sound.
Is Siri AI on Apple TV Coming to the EU at Launch?
The English-language Apple TV beta at launch is limited to the United States, Australia, Canada, India, New Zealand, Singapore, South Africa, and the United Kingdom. Apple also says Siri AI will not be initially available in the EU on iOS or iPadOS, which is the phone and tablet side the TV feature depends on for the home owner.
How Does Apple TV 4K Handle Siri Audio Privacy?
The A19 chip includes Secure Exclaves, isolated runtimes that process microphone data apart from the rest of the system. Apple says tvOS, apps, the user, and Apple cannot read that data, and Siri requests can run on the device or through Private Cloud Compute, where Apple says the data is neither stored nor made accessible to the company.
