Apple HomeView Puts CarPlay on a $299 Kitchen Screen
Apple’s $299 HomeView is a 7-inch home screen that runs CarPlay apps, so YouTube and Netflix stay off it at launch.
Apple opened preorders on October 13 for HomeView, a $299 smart display that goes on sale November 13. The 7-inch square screen runs HomeView software, not iOS, and it has no App Store.
Third-party software arrives the way a dashboard does. If an audio or video app already speaks CarPlay, it can appear on the kitchen counter without a new build from the developer.
CarPlay Apps Show Up on the Kitchen Counter
Greg Joswiak, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing, said the product is shared by everyone in the home yet feels personal to each user. That line sells a family tablet. The software underneath is closer to a car screen that happens to sit next to the sink.
Apple’s own developer notes state that CarPlay apps work on HomeView unmodified. The company put that rule in public the same week it showed the hardware, which is how a kitchen display inherits whatever catalog automakers already have.
CarPlay audio and video apps also work on Apple HomeView without requiring you to make any modifications to your app.

The iOS developer agreement was updated in the same window to name HomeView as a destination for CarPlay apps and for iOS widgets. That is a shipping path, not a rumor about a later store.
HOW APPS REACH THE DISPLAY
- Built-in set: FaceTime, Messages, Safari, Apple Music, Apple Podcasts, Calendar, and a small cluster of other Apple tools sit on the device.
- From the phone: Apple TV, Apple Books audiobooks, Apple Music Classical, and Apple News can ride over from a paired iPhone, and some of that playback uses AirPlay rather than a native HomeView app.
- CarPlay catalog: Audio apps already built for cars, including Spotify, can appear automatically when they are installed on the owner’s iPhone.
- Launch gaps: YouTube, Netflix, and Disney+ are not on the Home Screen at launch, and video for those services goes through Safari unless the companies ship CarPlay video apps.
A parked-car video template is a thin substitute for a living-room store, which is why the missing streamers will dominate the first week of arguments. The louder long-term limit is that a new device class now takes its third-party map from the dashboard, not from the App Store.
Two Models at One $299 Price
Both versions use an A18 chip, a 12-megapixel Center Stage camera with an ƒ/2.4 lens, and a Liquid Retina panel that Apple lists as 7 inches diagonal (6.98 inches when measured corner to corner). Resolution is 1088-by-1088 at 220 ppi. Brightness runs from 500 nits down to 0.3 nits, which Apple is using as a nightstand setting.
The tabletop model is an aluminum screen on a domed speaker base, joined by a stainless steel hinge so the panel can tilt. It comes in silver, starlight, rose pink, and space gray, each with a matching cable. The wall model uses the same panel in silver or space gray and hangs on three Schneider Home mounts that are sold separately.
TABLETOP VERSUS WALL
| Spec | HomeView | HomeView (Wall Mounted) |
|---|---|---|
| Price | $299 | $299 |
| Weight | 2.1 pounds (952 grams) | 0.63 pound (286 grams) |
| Colors | Silver, Starlight, Rose Pink, Space Gray | Silver, Space Gray |
| Speakers | Two full-range drivers, down-firing woofer, two force-cancelling passive radiators | Two full-range drivers, tuned for a wall |
| In the box | Display, 1.5 m USB-C cable, 30W adapter | Display only |
The wall unit needs a compatible mount, a USB-C cable, and a power adapter of at least 20W, all sold separately, and ADT can install it in most U.S. areas. Wireless radios are Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 6.0, and Thread, and the chassis includes an ambient light sensor plus temperature and humidity sensing that later thermostats can read.
Spatial Audio with Dolby Atmos is listed for music and video. Computational audio retunes loudness and bass as the volume changes. Four microphones feed far-field Siri, and the same array listens for smoke and carbon monoxide alarm tones, then pings an iPhone, iPad, or Apple Watch.
What HomeView Needs From Your iPhone
Setup and multiuser support need an iPhone on iOS 27.2 or later, or an iPad on iPadOS 27.2 or later, plus Wi-Fi. Early write-ups said an iPad could not finish setup. Apple’s spec sheet allows either device, and that is the rule buyers should use.
Siri AI runs in beta in HomeView software 27.2. Anyone in the room can ask general questions, hold a longer conversation, and get better music suggestions, even if the paired phone is too old for Apple Intelligence. Personal context is the gated layer. Calendar details, Messages, and actions across apps need a paired Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone or iPad with Siri AI turned on in a supported language, which Apple currently lists as English.
Server-side Apple Intelligence features are subject to daily usage limits, and Apple says wider access will be sold later. Expressive Siri voices are edited on a paired compatible device, then copied to HomeView. Conversations that start on the display continue in the Siri app on iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, or Apple Vision Pro through iCloud.
Handoff is physical: put the iPhone in front of the screen and a song from the car or a walk keeps playing. Intercom can hit one room or the whole house, reaching other HomeView units, HomePod speakers, and personal devices. Live Activities surface a timer, a track, or an incoming Intercom blast without opening an app.
A kitchen mode turns a web recipe into step-by-step cards with hands-free timers. That is a useful demo. It is also Safari doing the work a YouTube cooking app would have done on an Echo Show.
Siri AI Ships in Pieces Across Three Hubs
HomeView is the screen in a three-product hub refresh announced the same day. The speaker arrives first and the assistant arrives last, which is the part of the launch that will age poorly if the software slip lasts.
THREE HUBS, THREE SIRI CLOCKS
| Product | U.S. price | On sale | Siri AI |
|---|---|---|---|
| HomePod mini 2 | $149 | October 30 | Later software update |
| Apple HomeView | $299 | November 13 | Beta in HomeView software 27.2 |
| Apple TV 4K (4th generation) | $299 | November 13 | Beta in tvOS 27.2 |
HomePod mini 2 is $149, $50 above the original mini, in pink, green, blue, white, and midnight. Kaiann Drance, Apple’s vice president of Worldwide Home Product Marketing, called out Siri AI, the new colors, and the sound in the speaker’s own release, and the company is still holding the assistant for a later update. Paired with the new Apple TV 4K, two Mini 2 units can form a four-speaker surround setup that calibrates to the room.
The fourth-generation Apple TV 4K is $299, with an A19 chip Apple rates at up to 50 percent faster CPU performance and up to 2x faster GPU performance than the previous generation. It has 128 GB of storage, three far-field microphones, Ethernet, Thread, and a remote that works with Find My. Preorders are open in the U.S. and 29 other countries and regions.
A kitchen screen that leans this hard on Siri still has to beat years of people talking past the assistant. The hardware can ship on November 13. The trust problem cannot.
Nine Camera Feeds Behind a Face Check
HomeView can recognize up to six people and give each one a Home Screen of apps and widgets. Faces include a Photos frame with Portrait-style depth, a Flow animation that reacts to motion, a Snoopy face tied to weather and holidays, a Home Modular control grid, and a Home Camera face that livestreams up to nine feeds.
PRIVACY LIMITS ON A SHARED SCREEN
- On-device faces: Face and voice data for switching users is processed in Secure Exclaves on the A18, compartments Apple says the HomeView software, apps, the user, and Apple cannot read.
- Phone as key: Messages and Calendar appear only when the camera recognizes the enrolled person and that person’s paired iPhone or iPad is present and was recently unlocked.
- Guest layer: Shared photo albums and music are open to the household, including guests, without opening personal inboxes.
- Cloud path: Siri requests run on-device or through Private Cloud Compute, which Apple says does not store the data or give Apple access.
With a supported iCloud+ plan, compatible cameras can flag people, familiar faces, pets, packages, and vehicles, and HomeView can read out a short description of a clip. Find My can show a shared location or ping a missing iPhone, AirPods case, or AirTag. The display also works with existing Works with Apple Home and Matter accessories, so the screen is a dashboard for gear people already own, not only for the new branded line.
The Home Collection Starts at $39.95
Apple Home Collection is the accessory pack HomeView is meant to drive, designed with LG Electronics and Schneider Electric and managed only through the Home app. Matthew Costello, Apple’s vice president of Hardware Engineering, said the point was to let people pick accessories with confidence. Setup is a tap on iPhone, with no extra app and no extra account, and camera footage is end-to-end encrypted so LG, Schneider, and Apple cannot read it.
Availability begins in December, with some products slipping into early 2027. Apple Retail will offer paid ADT installation in the U.S. this fall.
APPLE HOME COLLECTION PRICES
- LG Video Doorbell Wired: $249.95, dual cameras (2.5K front, full HD down), spotlight, chime through HomeView and HomePod, U.S., Canada, and the UK.
- LG Floodlight Cam: $399.95, adaptive dual floodlights and color night vision, U.S., Canada, and the UK.
- LG Outdoor Cam Plug-In: $299.95, U.S., Canada, and the UK.
- LG Indoor Cam Plug-In: $199.95, tilts up when someone checks in and tilts down when the first person comes home, U.S., Canada, and the UK.
- LG Smart Deadbolt Lock: $349.95, Ultra Wideband auto-unlock, PIN pad, hidden key slot, U.S. and Canada only.
- Thermostats and sensors: LG and Schneider Home smart thermostats at $199.95 each, room sensors at $39.95 each, U.S. and Canada only.
Each LG camera records up to 2.5K video, keeps 10 days of event history in iCloud+, and caches clips on the device if Wi-Fi drops. The lock can share guest access in the Home app, works locally over Matter and Aliro, and pairs with the doorbell so a person can see, speak, and unlock from one view. Adaptive Temperature uses the iPhone to shift heat and cooling when someone is home, winding down, or away, and Clean Energy Guidance in the contiguous U.S. can move HVAC to cheaper, cleaner hours on a compatible utility plan.
Kihyun Jung, LG Electronics’ executive vice president, called the work a co-created home. Olivier Blum, Schneider Electric’s CEO, pointed at climate control and energy use. The sensors in HomeView, HomePod, and HomePod mini can feed those thermostats, which is the quiet reason Apple put a humidity chip in a $299 screen.
HomeView preorders opened October 13 in the U.S., the UK, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and India, with Singapore following on October 15 at 9 a.m. and South Africa listed through authorized resellers. The Mini 2 reaches stores October 30. The display and the new Apple TV 4K follow on November 13, and the locks and cameras start landing in December. The first Apple smart display will spend those weeks as a FaceTime panel, a nine-up security board, and a CarPlay speaker that still opens Safari when someone wants a show.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does Apple HomeView cost?
Both the tabletop HomeView and the wall-mounted HomeView are $299 in the U.S. The tabletop box includes a 1.5 m USB-C cable and a 30W adapter, while the wall model ships as the panel only, so the Schneider Home mount, cable, and a 20W or higher adapter are extra.
Does Apple HomeView have an App Store?
No. There is no on-device store and no way to sideload a random iPhone app. Small iOS widgets and Live Activities can appear on the display when Apple treats them as suitable, which is a separate path from full apps and is why a timer or a now-playing card can show up even when Netflix cannot.
What iPhone or iPad do you need for HomeView?
Any iPhone on iOS 27.2 or later, or any iPad on iPadOS 27.2 or later, can complete setup and enroll a user. Personal context, including reading a friend’s song rec in Messages, still needs a paired Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone or iPad with Siri AI on, and up to six household members can be enrolled, each with an Apple Account on that same software floor.
When does Apple HomeView go on sale?
Stores get HomeView on November 13 after preorders that opened October 13 in most listed markets. Singapore preorders open October 15 at 9 a.m., and the HomePod mini 2 reaches shelves first on October 30, so a speaker hub is available more than two weeks before the screen.
Can HomeView show security cameras and lock the door?
Yes. The Home Camera face can livestream up to nine feeds, and the display controls locks, lights, blinds, and thermostats already in the Home app. The new LG deadbolt and the two partner thermostats are sold only in the U.S. and Canada, while the LG cameras and doorbell also go on sale in the UK, with some Collection items slipping from December into early 2027.
