The Windows 11 Photos App Still Privileges OneDrive
Windows 11 Photos now shows iCloud next to OneDrive, but Moments, recaps, and On this day still work only with OneDrive libraries.
Microsoft began rolling a rebuilt Windows 11 Photos app to Insiders on October 15, 2026, putting PC, OneDrive, and iCloud pictures in one Gallery. Moments, seasonal recaps, and On this day still work only with OneDrive photos, and everyone else waits until later in 2026.
Giorgio Sardo, vice president for Microsoft Store and Windows Apps, framed the work as a faster way to find a library, edit a favorite shot, and move through the app. The new Photos experiences on Windows 11 replace the Gallery, the editor, and the viewer at once.
The iCloud Path Still Needs a Second Install
The headline is a single grid. Photos and videos on the PC, in OneDrive, and in Apple iCloud show up in one Gallery, with browse-by-date, people, albums, favorites, and filters for where a file lives. Device copies stay usable offline, and a OneDrive sign-in is not required to see local files or iCloud.
iCloud does not appear by itself. Microsoft points people to iCloud for Windows in the Microsoft Store, then to Apple’s own steps to set up Photos in iCloud for Windows. Shared Albums stay in the separate iCloud Shared Albums app, so family trip dumps still leave Photos.
Phone camera rolls take a Microsoft path if they are going to OneDrive. Sardo tells people to turn on Camera Backup in the OneDrive mobile app on iOS or Android, after which those shots show up on the phone, in a browser, and in Photos on Windows. That is a second setup, not a free lunch from the iPhone’s own library.
WHERE A PHOTO CAN GO
| Job | Local PC | OneDrive | iCloud |
|---|---|---|---|
| Show up in Gallery | Yes | Yes | Yes, after Apple’s app |
| Use without a OneDrive sign-in | Yes | No | Yes |
| Moments, recaps, On this day | No | Yes | No |
| Shared albums inside Photos | Albums in Photos | Albums in Photos | iCloud Shared Albums app |
| Phone backup into this Gallery | Copy files yourself | Camera Backup in OneDrive mobile | iCloud Photos on the phone |
The grid is real. The privileges inside it are not even.
Peaceful Moments, OneDrive Only
Sardo’s Gallery copy spends its warmth on OneDrive. Moments scans that library for themes, names them, and surfaces them through the year. The example Microsoft gives is Peaceful Moments, a quieter slice of a trip or an ordinary scene you would not have searched for. At the end of a season, OneDrive builds a recap on its own. Each memory plays as a slideshow you can watch, share, or save as a video. On this day pulls shots from the same date in past years.
Our focus is simple: help you rediscover and organize your collection, give you more capable tools for your favorite shots, and make the everyday experience faster.
Giorgio Sardo, Vice President, Microsoft Store and Windows Apps, Windows Experience Blog
Rediscovery, in that post, is a OneDrive feature list. iCloud photos can sit in the same Gallery, take the same people filter, and join an album you make by hand. They do not get the automatic memory machine. People search is the other funnel: pick OneDrive and a face, or two friends together, and skip the rest of the library. Natural-language search takes a line like “a family picnic by the lake” or “sunset at the beach.” On supported hardware, improved Windows Search also reaches photos in the local Pictures Library, with limits on supported file types and languages.
Jeff Teper, Microsoft’s EVP for Apps and Agents, posted the same day that the new Photos app was “fast, fun with PC, OneDrive, and iCloud files,” and tagged OneDrive. That is the honest product map. iCloud is a source. OneDrive is the product.
Meet a Gallery That Looks Like the Web
Microsoft rebuilt the editor from the ground up with WinUI 3 and calls it a native Editor. It calls the viewer a redesigned native Viewer. The Gallery is “all-new” and “fast, beautiful.” Native never lands on that third pillar in the announcement.
That wording is the giveaway. In July 2026 Microsoft said OneDrive Photos was already generally available, and that Windows Insiders in the Experimental channel were previewing its gallery as Photos (Preview), the same underlying experience rather than a second app. The October 15, 2026 Photos post now sells a unified Gallery with OneDrive’s Moments language on top. The Editor and Viewer got a native rewrite. The Gallery still looks like a web canvas riding next to those tools, which is why the screenshots feel like a OneDrive site dropped into a WinUI shell.
Sardo posted the rollout himself the same afternoon.

Windows already tried this split in 2024, when Photos moved off UWP onto the Windows App SDK and kept a WebView2 path for the shared editor used with OneDrive. The 2026 native Editor is a retreat from that web editor. The Gallery looks like the other half of the same bet, still waiting for the same treatment.
What Microsoft Clocked in Its Own Tests
Speed is the other pitch, and it is four different measurements, not one leap. Footnote 1 on Sardo’s post says the Editor and Viewer figures come from controlled tests on Windows 11 PCs, x64 and ARM64, against Photos Version 2026.11060. Actual results vary by device. Navjot Virk, corporate vice president for Windows Experiences, published a separate Windows 11 post the same day with a fifth number for launching the whole app.
MICROSOFT’S PHOTOS SPEED CLAIMS
| Part of the app | Claim | Baseline |
|---|---|---|
| Editor launch | 25% faster | Photos Version 2026.11060 |
| Viewer start | 15% faster on average | Photos Version 2026.11060 |
| HEIC in the Viewer | up to 30% faster | Photos Version 2026.11060 |
| Photos app launch | up to 20% faster | Separate Windows 11 post, not the 2026.11060 note |
Virk wrote that the Photos app now launches up to 20% faster and that the viewer opens pictures with less clutter. Do not fold that 20% into the Editor’s 25% or the Viewer average of 15%. They are not the same test write-up.
Relight Expands Beyond Copilot+ PCs
The editor is grouped around four jobs, which is the first time Photos has sounded like a tool rather than a strip of sliders. HDR color and contrast stay in the file while you edit. HEIC and WebP can be edited and saved in those formats, including shots from an iPhone. Repair uses an updated model: circle or brush an object, and Photos tries to take it out. Microsoft’s own caption uses a bag in the foreground as the demo.
THE FOUR EDITOR GROUPS
- Crop: Framing, composition, aspect ratio, and new social-network templates so a post size is a preset rather than a guess.
- Enhance: Light, color, and Relight, which places up to three lights, sets color, and aims them at one focus point, with a golden hour preset.
- Repair: Fixes and object removal with the newer model, using a circle or a brush on the thing you want gone.
- Stylize: Looks that change the feel of a picture after the technical pass.
Relight is the feature with a past. On May 6, 2025, Virk introduced it as a Copilot+ PC tool in Photos, with the same three lights, follow-focus, brightness, intensity, and one-click presets. Sardo now says Microsoft is expanding Relight to all Windows 11 devices. That is a widening, not a finished ship. If a machine still lacks it, the post already warned that the rollout is still moving.
File Explorer’s New Fast Path to a Photo
Double-click a picture in File Explorer and Windows now opens the new viewer instead of dragging you through the full Gallery. That is the change most people will feel before they ever connect iCloud. The layout keeps edit, print, and share close, adds arrow-key walking, and puts remaining commands in one menu. HDR viewing is improved. SVG files open. An information button shows the file name, date, camera details, a map when location data exists, a color histogram, and visual search.
Those extras stay out of the way until you ask. The 15% faster start on average, and the up to 30% faster HEIC path, are why Microsoft is willing to make this the default window from Explorer. It is also why the native label sits on the viewer and not on the Gallery. One is a fast local window. The other is a library product.
How to Add iCloud Photos on Windows 11
Windows Insiders on Windows 11 can install the latest Photos update, open Gallery, and connect OneDrive, or install iCloud for Windows and sign in with an Apple Account. Feedback goes through Feedback Hub with Win + F, under Apps, then Photos. Sardo also posted an aka.ms link for that bucket. There is no Insider channel named in the post, and no calendar day for machines outside the program beyond later in 2026.
HOW PHOTOS GOT HERE
- June 2024: Photos leaves UWP for the Windows App SDK, with retail rollout from version 2024.11050.3002.0, and keeps a WebView2 path shared with OneDrive.
- May 6, 2025: Relight ships for Copilot+ PCs, with up to three lights and presets.
- July 2026: Microsoft says OneDrive Photos is generally available and that Experimental Insiders are seeing its gallery as Photos (Preview), the same underlying experience.
- October 15, 2026: The rebuilt Gallery, native Editor, and native Viewer start rolling to Windows Insiders, with iCloud in the grid and Moments still on OneDrive.
The install list is short. The conditions are not.
WHAT WE KNOW
- Insider start: The rebuild began reaching Windows 11 Insiders on October 15, 2026.
- OneDrive extras: Moments, seasonal recaps, and On this day run on OneDrive photos only.
- iCloud gate: Apple’s iCloud for Windows app is required, and Shared Albums stay outside Photos.
- Native split: Microsoft calls the Editor and Viewer native and does not use that word for Gallery.
WHAT IS UNCONFIRMED
- Everyone else: No day is set for all Windows 11 PCs beyond later in 2026.
- Gallery stack: Microsoft has not said whether Gallery is WinUI 3, WebView2, or both.
- Relight on a given PC: Expansion to all Windows 11 devices is in progress, not finished on every machine.
The Gallery will look generous on a mixed Apple-and-Windows desk, because the iPhone shots finally sit next to the PC folder. The memories, the recaps, and the “on this day” bump still live where Microsoft can meter them, on OneDrive, until a later build says otherwise.
