Samsung’s 45% Fold8 Jump Rides an Apple Search Spike
Samsung says Galaxy Z Fold8 and Fold8 Ultra sales in Europe are up 45% in nine weeks, citing a search spike that landed the week Apple unveiled iPhone Duo.
Samsung said on October 22 that Galaxy Z Fold8 and Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra sales in Europe rose 45% in the nine weeks after the August 7 launch. The company compared that pair with Galaxy Z Fold7 sales a year earlier and released no unit counts.
Samsung also cited a 460% jump in Google searches for its foldables in the week of September 6 to 12, the same window in which Apple unveiled the iPhone Duo.
The 45% Figure Puts Two Phones on One Side
The percentage comes from Samsung’s UK newsroom, which described “exceptional demand” for the two new book phones and reported a 45% increase in sales across Europe. The footnote is plain: the comparison uses Fold7 sales in the equivalent weeks of 2025.
Samsung’s own headline rounds that same 45% to “almost 50%”. In September the company had gone further. Its Belgium newsroom said on September 10 that combined Fold8 and Fold8 Ultra sales in Europe sat 50% above Fold7 after the first month on sale.
Nine weeks is a longer window than that early snapshot. August 7 plus 63 days lands on October 9, so the 45% covers the stretch through early October, then was published on October 22. The later figure is still a gain. It is also a slower one than the 50% Samsung posted when the phones were new.
WHAT THE 45% COUNTS
- The pair: Galaxy Z Fold8 and Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra are added together, then set against one Fold7.
- The gap: Fold8 Ultra is a new Ultra book phone, so 2026 has an extra model the 2025 baseline did not.
- The silence: Samsung did not split the two Fold8s, and it did not publish units or revenue.
- The missing Flip: Galaxy Z Flip8 is named in the Z8 series and left out of the sales boast.
A bigger range selling more is not the same as either new Fold beating Fold7 on its own. Until a tracker prints Europe units, the record is Samsung’s percentage, not a public volume.
Search Spiked 460% the Week of the iPhone Duo
Samsung treated Google traffic as a second proof point. Searches for Samsung foldables rose more than 260% in September against August, across a 32-market list that runs from Germany, the UK and France through the Nordics, the Baltics, the Balkans, Greece and Ukraine.
The sharpest week was September 6 to 12, up 460% against August 30 to September 5. Apple unveiled the iPhone Duo on September 9, inside that week. Samsung’s October 22 note never names Apple, the Duo, or the event at Apple Park.
That omission does not make the search spike fake. It does change what the spike measures. People who had never looked at a folding phone typed after Apple put one on a stage, and a share of those queries landed on Samsung, which had already been selling Fold8 and Fold8 Ultra for a month.
Apple advertised the category. Samsung already had a passport-style Fold8 in European shops, so a Duo-week searcher could buy a similar shape without waiting for Apple’s queue.
THE FOLDABLE AUTUMN IN EUROPE
- July 22, 2026: Samsung unveils the Z8 series in London, adding Fold8 Ultra beside Fold8 and Flip8.
- August 7, 2026: Sales begin in select markets, including the UK.
- September 9, 2026: Apple unveils the iPhone Duo at Apple Park.
- September 6-12, 2026: Samsung foldable searches jump 460% against the prior week.
- September 10, 2026: Samsung says combined Fold8 and Fold8 Ultra sales in Europe sit 50% above Fold7.
- October 16, 2026: Apple opens Duo pre-orders; online delivery estimates slip to late January 2027.
- October 22, 2026: Samsung updates the Europe claim to 45% over nine weeks.
- October 23, 2026: Apple lists in-store Duo sales, with online orders still pointing at January.
The search curve and the sales curve are not the same thing. A 460% week of curiosity can lift a 45% sales line without turning foldables into a mass product. Samsung still has not said how many Fold8 units that 45% represents.
What Separates Fold8 From Fold8 Ultra
The two-against-one math is easier to defend once the shapes are on the table. Fold8 is not a renamed Fold7. Samsung built it around a wider cover screen and a 4:3 main display, a short, wide book meant for messages on the outside and reading, video and games on the inside. At 201g it is the lightest Galaxy Z Fold the company has shipped.
Fold8 Ultra keeps the tall book that Fold7 buyers already knew, with an 8-inch main display and a 6.5-inch cover. It is Galaxy’s slimmest Z Fold yet at 4.1 mm when unfolded, 8.9mm folded, and 215g. The Ultra also carries the 200MP main camera, a 50MP ultra-wide, a 10MP telephoto, and a 5,000 mAh battery.
Apple’s Duo uses that same short, wide book idea. Samsung put Fold8 on sale on August 7. Apple showed its version on September 9. For six weeks the only passport-style foldable a European buyer could actually walk out with was Samsung’s.
UK recommended prices sit just under Apple’s 256GB Duo listing of £1,999. Samsung’s launch note put £1,699 for the 256GB Fold8, which is £300 below that Duo price, with Fold8 Ultra at £1,899.
UK LAUNCH PRICES AND SCREENS
| Phone | In the 45% | 256GB UK RRP | Open screen |
|---|---|---|---|
| Galaxy Z Fold8 | Yes | £1,699 | 4:3 book, 5.5-inch cover |
| Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra | Yes | £1,899 | 8-inch book, 6.5-inch cover |
| Galaxy Z Flip8 | No | £1,149 | Clamshell, FlexWindow cover |
| iPhone Duo (256GB) | Rival | £1,999 | Passport-style book |
512GB and 1TB Fold8 trims are £1,869 and £2,209. The matching Ultra trims are £2,069 and £2,409. Flip8’s 512GB trim is £1,319. Apple priced the Duo from $1,999 in the United States.
Flip Buyers Moved Up, iPhone Buyers Came In
The October 22 note is a Fold story wearing a Z8 series headline. Flip8 is in the photos and the AI copy, then drops out of the sales line. That is consistent with a search boom tied to Apple’s book foldable, not to a clamshell.
Samsung still used Flip8 in September, when it published Smart Switch figures for August 7 through September 8. Those numbers are about who switched, not about how many phones left the warehouse.
SMART SWITCH, AUGUST 7 TO SEPTEMBER 8
- Rival Flip buyers: 20% of Galaxy Z Flip8 buyers came from a competing brand, and Samsung said many of them were on a foldable for the first time.
- Flip to Fold: Three times as many Galaxy Z Flip owners moved up to Fold8 as had moved to Fold7 a year earlier.
- iPhone to Z8: iPhone users who came across to the three Z8 phones via Smart Switch rose 60% against the same stretch after the Z7 launch in 2025.
- Pre-orders: On August 7 Samsung said pre-orders for the new lineup were up more than 30% on the previous generation, with Graphite leading Fold8 and Fold8 Ultra.
A 60% rise in iPhone switchers is a rate, not a share of total sales. Samsung did not say what fraction of Fold8 buyers used to carry an iPhone. The figure still sits next to the later search spike: some iPhone owners looked at a foldable after Apple blessed the idea, then bought the Samsung that was already on a shelf.
Software is the other pitch Samsung did name. Now Brief adds security and privacy cards. Now Nudge can keep a chat and the next step, a calendar slot or a saved place, side by side on the inner screen. Gemini Intelligence can run across 40+ apps, and Gemini Notebook is built for split view on the inner panel. Every Z8 buyer also gets a six-month Google AI Pro trial. None of that appears in the 45% footnote.
Fold7 Already Cleared 250,000 in Western Europe
The year-ago baseline was not a weak one. Fold7 went on sale in July 2025 and, according to Counterpoint Research’s Weekly Smartphone Tracker, sold over a quarter of a million units in Western Europe in its first four weeks. That was more than double Galaxy Z Fold6 in the same stretch, and almost 70% above Galaxy Z Fold4, which had been Samsung’s best Fold in the region.
Counterpoint also said no other brand’s book or clamshell had sold as many in Western Europe in a first month. Associate Director Jan Stryjak tied that jump to thickness, weight, cameras and Galaxy AI, after years of smaller yearly tweaks.
After years of iterative upgrades, the Galaxy Z Fold7 is a major step forward, and Samsung has finally closed the gap on the competition. It is Samsung’s thinnest and lightest book-type foldable yet, and with its improved camera module and advanced Galaxy AI features, the brand seems to have finally brought foldable smartphones to the mass market.
Jan Stryjak, Associate Director, Counterpoint Research, September 11, 2025
If Fold7 already cleared 250,000 in four weeks in Western Europe, a 45% lift on a nine-week Europe-wide Fold pair is a high-base problem as much as a triumph. Samsung is asking to be measured against a phone Counterpoint had already called its fastest Fold in the region. Beating that line with two SKUs is still a beat. It is a different claim from “Fold8 alone is the new record.”
Independent trackers have not published a matching Europe unit count for Fold8 and Fold8 Ultra. Until they do, the 250,000 Fold7 month is the last public volume sitting next to Samsung’s new percentages.
iPhone Duo Launch Day Meets a January Queue
Apple opened iPhone Duo pre-orders on October 16. Delivery estimates on the online store moved to late January 2027 within minutes, across colours and capacities. Apple priced the phone from $1,999 for 256GB, in Star White and Night Sky, and set October 23 as the in-store date.
Apple put a name on the wait. After the slip, the company said demand for its first foldable had been “nothing short of extraordinary,” and that it would keep taking online orders while it tried to get phones into buyers’ hands.
The pre-order demand for iPhone Duo, our first foldable iPhone, has been nothing short of extraordinary. We are working hard to get this revolutionary new product into customers’ hands as quickly as possible, and we will continue accepting orders online.
Apple, October 18, 2026
Greg Joswiak, Apple’s senior vice president of marketing, said on October 22 that the company had not shipped the whole run through pre-order and would have phones in stores, including the Fifth Avenue shop in New York. Limited walk-in stock on October 23 does not clear a January online queue. It also does not put Duo volume into the nine weeks Samsung just scored.
So the autumn splits in a lopsided way. Samsung can count Fold8 and Fold8 Ultra units it has already sold, including the new 4:3 Fold8 that looks like the phone Apple just taught Europe to search for. Apple can count pre-orders it cannot fill until 2027, plus whatever a store still has in a drawer on launch day.
Online Duo orders still point to January. Until those boxes arrive, the foldable Samsung is counting in Europe is the one people can take home.
