Google Wallet Adds Irish and Italian Passports, Not Boarding Rights
Google Wallet is adding Irish and Italian ID passes before official EU wallets ship, but those passes still cannot replace a paper passport.
Google Wallet is showing Ireland and Italy as ID pass options on Android, while its help page still names five countries. The drop arrived with a new bell-shaped notification feed, and both are coming through a server-side rollout, so many phones still lack them.
The pass is a digital ID built from a physical passport, not a boarding document. Google’s own rules still tell holders to keep the booklet, and that gap is the whole product in Europe right now.
Ireland and Italy Appear as ID Pass Options
On 21 October 2026, the ID pass flow in Google Wallet began offering Ireland and Italy as passport regions. The options sit under Add to Google Wallet, then IDs and personal info, then ID pass, the same path used in older markets.
The two countries join a list that already included Brazil, Singapore, Taiwan, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Google has not posted a matching product blog for this pair, and the change is still limited, which is why some accounts see the new regions and others do not.
That quiet pattern matches earlier expansions. The company announced ID passes based on passport information for Singapore, Taiwan, and Brazil on 28 April 2026, days after the choices had already started to show up in the app. Ireland and Italy are following the same path: the phone updates first, the paperwork later.
In early June 2026, at Money 20/20 Europe in Amsterdam, Google said ID passes would reach some European Union countries by the end of summer, and named Italy among them. The summer window slipped. The Irish and Italian rows are landing in late October instead, still as a gradual switch rather than a day-one launch.
Google’s Help Page Still Lists Five Countries
Open Google’s public ID pass help page and the supported-region list stops at Brazil, Singapore, Taiwan, the United Kingdom, and the United States of America. Ireland and Italy are not on it. The help article is otherwise current: it describes NFC, face video, TSA rules, and on-device storage.
That lag is the tell. This is not a rebuilt Wallet. It is a server flag turning on a passport reader that already existed, country by country, while the public document trails the binary.
WHERE ID PASSES STAND NOW
| Region | When Google dated it | Travel use |
|---|---|---|
| United States | Announced 12 September 2024 | TSA domestic flights |
| United Kingdom | Announced 29 April 2025 | Not TSA, not immigration |
| Brazil | Announced 28 April 2026 | Not immigration or travel |
| Singapore | Announced 28 April 2026 | Not immigration or travel |
| Taiwan | Announced 28 April 2026 | Not immigration or travel |
| Ireland | Appearing in the app, 21 October 2026 | Not on the help list; not immigration |
| Italy | Appearing in the app, 21 October 2026 | Not on the help list; not immigration |
The five older rows are what Google will still defend in writing. The two new rows are what a subset of Android phones will actually offer if you tap ID pass today. Until the help page moves, treat Ireland and Italy as preview switches, not a finished national launch.
The Italian State Wallet Does Not Store Passports
Italy already ships a government wallet. IT-Wallet lives inside the public IO app and, by 17 February 2026, had 10.1 million activations. The documents it holds are the ones the Italian state already digitised: driving licences, health cards, and disability cards.
A passport is not on that list. Google’s ID pass fills the empty slot with a private credential derived from the booklet’s printed page and its security chip. It is not IT-Wallet, it is not certified as an EU Digital Identity Wallet, and it does not travel with the legal weight of the paper passport.
Ireland is further back. Its Government Digital Wallet is still a citizen-facing pilot, built on MyGovID and the Personal Public Service Number, while the state transposes the EU identity rules. Into that gap, Google is dropping a passport reader that any Android 9 phone with NFC can try, once the server flag arrives.
The European Commission’s own framework leaves a door open. Member states may offer wallets issued by public authorities or by recognised private entities. Google is acting like a private wallet before that recognition is settled, and before most capitals have a certified app of their own.
What an ID Pass Can Do
An ID pass is a digital ID made from a valid passport, stored on the phone, and shown over NFC or a QR code. Google says it is for identity and age checks in apps and at readers that accept it. It is not a government-issued ID, and it is not a stand-in for the booklet you already carry.
An ID pass isn’t an official form of identification or a replacement for your physical documentation, so keep your physical ID with you as needed.
Google Wallet Help, Create or manage your ID pass
The same help page is blunt about geography. For non-US regions, ID passes cannot be used for immigration or travel. Only a pass built from a US passport works at TSA, and only for domestic flights. An Irish or Italian booklet in Wallet is, for now, an age and identity token for places that ask for one, not a border pass.
Setup is the same flow in every live country, and you can create an ID pass with a passport if your phone is on Android 9 or higher, has NFC, and has a screen lock. Bluetooth and Nearby devices must be on when you present it. You can hold only one ID pass, on one device. The pass is encrypted on the phone, not in the Google Account, and you cannot export it with Takeout.
HOW TO ADD AN ID PASS
- Open Wallet: Tap Add to Google Wallet, then ID, then ID Pass, then Continue.
- Pick the region: Choose the passport country, read the terms, and tap I agree.
- Scan the page: Photograph the info page and confirm the data the app reads back.
- Read the chip: Hold the phone to the front cover, back cover, or photo page until NFC finds the chip.
- Record your face: Shoot the short video, pick automated matching or a human review, then submit.
Automated face matching builds numeric face templates from the live video and the passport photo, then compares them. Google says that path can finish in seconds. A manual review usually takes no more than 30 minutes. After the check, Google says it deletes the face templates and other biometric data. A notification lands when the pass is ready.
If the chip will not read, the help page says to drop the phone case, lay the passport flat, and move the back of the phone slowly across the covers and the photo page. US chips sit inside the back cover. UK chips sit in the front cover. Other booklets vary. Lose the phone, and you can delete the pass from the app or from myaccount.google.com. Google also publishes a block form if you think someone else used your booklet to mint a pass.
Alan Stapelberg, group product manager for Google Wallet, has described the design as selective disclosure: only the details a checker needs, not the whole identity file. That is the pitch for pubs, apps, and account sign-ins. It is also why the pass can look useful in Dublin or Rome even while a border officer still wants the paper.
TSA Accepts the Phone and Still Wants Paper
The United States is the only market where the same credential has a named airport job. TSA says travelers can use a Digital ID at more than 250 airports through Apple Wallet, Google Wallet, Samsung Wallet, or a state app. You scan a QR code or tap the phone on a reader. TSA says it sees only what it needs to confirm who you are.
The same TSA page still requires a physical backup. All passengers must carry an acceptable compliant physical ID for verification. Google’s help page repeats the split: a US passport ID pass can stand in at supported TSA checkpoints if you lack a REAL ID licence, and you still travel with the booklet.
TSA FIGURES FOR A US PASSPORT
- Digital ID airports: More than 250 checkpoints accept a phone ID from Google Wallet and other approved apps.
- Touchless ID airports: TSA PreCheck Touchless ID runs at 65 airports, a separate facial-comparison lane.
- Airline reach: After the 24 June 2026 Google tie-in, that Touchless ID path works with more than 100 PreCheck airlines.
- Paper rule: TSA still tells every passenger to carry a physical ID, even when the phone works.
Google became the first digital wallet partner for Touchless ID on 24 June 2026. Atri Chandramouli, a Google Wallet product manager, wrote that the ID is encrypted and stored on the phone, and that Wallet shares it with TSA only after the traveler opts in and unlocks the device. P.J. Linarducci, vice president of product management for consumer payments at Google, said the tie-up helps PreCheck travelers move faster at checkpoints.
None of that stack exists for an Irish or Italian ID pass. Those passes can use the same NFC and QR machinery in Wallet. They do not get a TSA reader, and they do not get a European border reader either. The US file is the proof that a passport in Wallet can do airport work when a government plugs it in. Europe has not plugged it in.
A Bell Icon Sits Next to Your Profile
The other half of this update is easier to miss and closer to how Wallet will actually feel. A bell icon now sits in the top-right of the home screen, beside the profile switcher. Tap it, and a feed opens with updates about items stored in the app.
Google Play services v26.40, dated 12 October 2026, listed an in-app message center for Wallet, along with receipt scanning and cleaner merchant names on payment alerts. The bell is that message center made visible. Because the switch is server-side, installing the latest Play services is not enough; Google still has to turn the icon on for the account.
A live ID pass already depends on a notification. After you submit the face video, Wallet tells you when verification finishes. Parking that alert, and later alerts about passes, tickets, and cards, in one in-app feed is how a static card stack starts to behave like an inbox for documents that expire, fail a check, or need a fresh tap.
The feed does not make an Irish passport valid at a gate. It does make Wallet the place you look when a stored item changes state, which is the habit Google needs if ID passes are going to sit beside boarding passes and payment cards instead of in a dead folder.
The Official EU Wallet Is Due in December
Regulation (EU) 2024/1183, the eIDAS 2.0 update, has been in force since 20 May 2024. The Commission says member states must provide EU Digital Identity Wallets by the end of 2026. A Commission reply dated 8 September 2026 put the legal date at 24 December 2026: at least one certified wallet per country. Private firms that must use strong user authentication have until 24 December 2027 to accept those wallets when a customer asks.
Italy is the rare capital with a national app already in wide use, and even that app leaves the passport out. Ireland is still in a pilot. Several other states are late. Google is not waiting for the certified wallet to exist before it mints a passport-based pass that looks, on a phone, like the real thing.
THE ID PASS TIMELINE
- 12 September 2024: Google says a US passport ID pass is coming to Wallet, with tests at select TSA checkpoints, and warns that the digital ID is not a replacement for physical ID.
- 29 April 2025: Google says UK residents will be able to create ID passes from UK passports, and notes that UK passes are not eligible at TSA.
- 28 April 2026: Alan Stapelberg announces passport-based ID passes for Singapore, Taiwan, and Brazil, plus Aadhaar credentials on the device in India.
- 2-4 June 2026: At Money 20/20 Europe in Amsterdam, Google says ID passes will reach some EU countries by the end of summer, with Italy in that first group.
- 24 June 2026: TSA and Google launch PreCheck Touchless ID in Wallet, at 65 airports, with Google as the first wallet partner.
- 12 October 2026: Play services v26.40 lists an in-app message center for Wallet.
- 21 October 2026: Ireland and Italy start to appear as ID pass regions, and a bell icon begins to open the new notification feed.
People who already added a Singapore pass asked the obvious next question, which still has no new answer: if immigration will not take the phone, what is the pass for. An Indian user asked when a passport pass will sit next to Aadhaar. Someone else replied to the Android sighting by naming Greece. The country list is the product’s growth lever. Each drop is a flag, then a wait for a government reader that may never come.
Until a European checkpoint accepts that NFC tap, an Irish or Italian ID pass is a verified copy of a booklet you still have to pack. The bell will tell you when the copy is ready. The officer will still want the original.
