EgyptAir Opened Penalty-Free Refunds That the War Outlasted
EgyptAir waived cancel fees on grounded Gulf and Levant flights until 15 March 2026, then moved many of those tickets into credits as the 13-city halt ran on.
EgyptAir told passengers on cancelled Gulf and Levant flights they could reclaim fares without penalty until 15 March 2026. The national carrier posted that waiver on 2 March, after it had already grounded service from Cairo to 13 cities.
The cash offer was real, and it was short. Several of those cities still had no EgyptAir metal when the deadline passed, so the later settlement was credits, reroutes, and a refund queue the airline itself timed in working days.
A Two-Week Refund Window on a 13-City Halt
On 2 March 2026, EgyptAir said travellers hit by the cancellations could move a trip to the same city with no change fee until 15 March 2026. Anyone who wanted out could cancel through the original seller, the website, a company office, or an authorised agent, with no cancellation fee, subject to the ticket’s own rules.
That was not a general sale. The airline tied the waiver to flights already knocked out by the wave of cancellations, and it kept pointing people to the same phones: 1717 from an Egyptian mobile, 090070000 from a landline, and +971 4 230 6666 or +966 12 229 7777 from abroad.
Captain Ahmed Adel, chairman and managing director of EgyptAir Holding Company, was running the file from the crisis room at the Integrated Operations Control Center. The public line was safety. The practical effect was a calendar: book a new date by 15 March, or take the money, or sit on a ticket for a city that might not be open.
Thirteen Cities Went Dark on 28 February
The halt began on 28 February 2026, the day the United States and Israel struck Iran and several neighbouring countries closed airspace. EgyptAir’s own statement named 13 points from Cairo, until further notice.
THE GROUNDED EGYPTAIR CITIES
- Kuwait: Kuwait City.
- United Arab Emirates: Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Sharjah.
- Qatar and Bahrain: Doha and Bahrain.
- Saudi Arabia: Qassim and Dammam.
- Iraq: Erbil and Baghdad.
- The Levant and Oman: Amman, Beirut, and Muscat.
Cirium, the aviation analytics firm, counted 4,218 flights scheduled to land in Middle Eastern countries that Saturday and 966 cancellations, 22.9 percent of the inbound list, a figure that rose above 1,800 once outbound flights were added. EgyptAir was one carrier among many. Its problem was concentration: those 13 names are the Gulf and Levant network that feeds Cairo’s connecting bank.
Kuwait Tickets Outlived the Refund Deadline
The waiver treated 13 unequal cities as one file. Dubai and Dammam started to move first. Kuwait, Doha, Bahrain, Beirut, and Muscat did not.
THE RESTART DATES EGYPTAIR ACTUALLY POSTED
- 6 March 2026: Extra outbound round trips go on sale to Dubai and Dammam, bookable on the website, the call centre, sales offices, and agencies.
- 9 March 2026: One daily flight to Sharjah and two daily flights to Dubai resume, the airline said, after talks with Gulf civil aviation authorities.
- 10 March 2026: One daily Abu Dhabi service resumes, coordinated with the airport.
- 15 March 2026: The fee-free same-city change and penalty-free cancel window closes.
- 10 April 2026: EgyptAir says it has restarted one daily flight each to Sharjah, Dubai, and Riyadh, and two daily flights to Abu Dhabi, Dammam, and Amman. Riyadh was not on the original 13-city list. Erbil and Baghdad are set for one daily flight each from 14 April. Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain, and Lebanon still need permits.
- 17 June 2026: Direct Cairo-Kuwait flights resume as MS610 and MS611, one a day, through Terminal 4 at Kuwait International Airport, after a later strike on the airport forced another pause.
By 15 March a Dubai passenger could, in principle, use the free change onto the 9 March frequencies. A Kuwait passenger could not. Tickets left “open” on a closed airport produced no cancel event, so the advertised refund never triggered. Call centres and the Kuwait office were already hard to reach in the first week of March, which is why a cancellations and refunds rebooking guide mattered more than the date on the press note.
After 15 March, Credits Did the Work
The 15 March window did not end the cancellations. On 16 May 2026 EgyptAir published updated rules for cancelled EgyptAir flights that reached back to 28 February and forward to 20 April 2026, and to 23 June 2026 for Kuwait.
Refunds are allowed with no refund fees for passengers holding confirmed bookings on cancelled EGYPTAIR flights.
EgyptAir, Important Notice to Customers, 16 May 2026
Cash was only one line. The same notice let an individual turn the full ticket into an electronic miscellaneous document for later travel, through a sales office or the call centre, and it let that passenger change to a city outside the Middle East or the Gulf. Group money was handled apart.
WHAT EACH TICKET TYPE ACTUALLY GOT
| Path | Who it covered | What EgyptAir offered |
|---|---|---|
| Penalty-free cancel | Cancelled individual tickets, via the original seller, posted 2 March until 15 March 2026 | Fare back, no cancel fee, ticket rules still apply |
| Free same-city change | The same cancelled individual tickets, until 15 March 2026 | New date, original destination, no change fee |
| Later no-fee refund | Cancelled flights from 28 February to 20 April 2026, Kuwait through 23 June 2026 | Refunds with no refund fees |
| EMD credit | Individual tickets on suspended flights | Full value held for future EgyptAir travel |
| Reroute | Individual tickets on suspended flights | A city outside the Middle East or the Gulf |
| Group transfer | Deposits and issued group tickets on cancelled flights | Value moved to a future group booking, domestic or international |
| Still-operating flights | Bookings EgyptAir had not cancelled | Changes allowed, fare rules and any fare difference apply |
That table is the second bill. The March note sold a refund. The May note conserved cash for anyone who had not already been paid, and it parked group inventory in a future season.
Egypt Kept Its Airspace Open
EgyptAir could not fly into closed Gulf and Levant airspace. Egypt’s own sky stayed open. The Ministry of Civil Aviation said so on 28 February, and it put every Egyptian airport on maximum alert while it prepared to take diversions.
Civil Aviation Minister Sameh El-Hefny ran that watch from the ministry operations room with the Cairo Air Navigation Center and the airline’s control centre. On 28 February, Cairo International Airport took 12 diverted international flights. Sphinx, Alexandria, Hurghada, Sharm El-Sheikh, and Luxor together took 10 more, according to ministry operations data.
THE 28 FEBRUARY SPLIT
- EgyptAir network: 13 named cities from Cairo halted until further notice.
- Egyptian airports: 22 diverted airliners landed (12 at Cairo, 10 at five other fields).
- Regional inbound: Cirium logged 966 cancelled arrivals out of 4,218 scheduled, 22.9 percent.
- ICAO: Secretary-General Juan Carlos Salazar later praised Egypt for keeping airspace open and airports on high alert.
Other airlines used Egyptian airspace as a bypass. EgyptAir, sitting at the same hub, still had to refund or rebook the very routes that make Cairo a regional connector. The flag carrier ate the passenger file. The FIR collected the overflights.
How Do You Get an EgyptAir Refund?
Use the channel that sold the ticket. Website bookings go through EgyptAir’s online refund form. Office, call-centre, and agency tickets go back to that office or agent. The airline says a completed online request can take up to 21 working days to process, and it warns the wait can run longer when volumes are high, before the card company even posts the credit.
Filing the form cancels the reservation. People who paid with Fawry or Valu, or who reissued onto a different card, are told to visit an EgyptAir office instead of using the web form. Same-day tickets are another trap: the airline bars refunds and cancellations on the day the ticket or EMD is issued.
Passengers who mailed a request in early March were still chasing it in late April. A working-day clock that starts after a silent Kuwait office is not a two-week story. It is a spring of unpaid fares on cities that had not resumed.
Group Deposits Rolled Into Future Bookings
Individual travellers could, at least on paper, take cash until 15 March and again under the May notice. Groups could not. EgyptAir said deposits and issued group tickets on cancelled flights could be moved to a future group booking, in Egypt or abroad. That is inventory, not a refund.
Authorised agents sat in the middle, because the airline would only process a cancel through the original seller. Tour operators holding spring Gulf series then held undated credit in a market where Kuwait needed a mid-June restart and Doha, Bahrain, and Beirut were still waiting on permits in April. The passenger with a single website booking had a form. The operator with 40 names had a future file.
Kuwait shows how long that file could run. EgyptAir had talked about a 1 June return, then cancelled again after an Iranian strike on Kuwait International Airport, then restarted on 17 June through Terminal 4. The 15 March refund date was already three months behind that aircraft.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which EgyptAir Tickets Cannot Use the Online Refund Form?
Tickets paid with Fawry or Valu must be taken to the nearest EgyptAir office, and so must a refund when the ticket was reissued on a different credit card from the one that first paid. The web form is built for bookings bought on egyptair.com, one booking per form, filed from the same country used at reservation.
Can You Refund an EgyptAir Ticket on the Day You Buy It?
No. EgyptAir bars refunds and cancellations on the same day travel documents are issued, for both tickets and EMDs, with its usual conditions on top. Wait until the next day, then use the original seller or the online form if the fare rules allow it.
Do You File the Online Refund From the Same Country as the Booking?
Yes. The airline tells customers to submit the online refund form from the same country selected during the reservation. A form filed from another country is the kind of mismatch that sends people back into the call-centre queue.
What Happens to the Booking After You Submit the Online Refund?
EgyptAir cancels the reservation automatically once the auto-refund finishes or once the online form is in. Ancillary services bought as separate EMDs are not in that click; those have to be cancelled at an office or by email, and they follow their own rules.
The 15 March waiver put a date on a war EgyptAir did not control. Passengers who used it got out. Everyone else inherited a May credit regime, a 21-working-day clock, and, on Kuwait, a 17 June aeroplane.
