Windows 11 24H2 Home and Pro Lose Monthly Security Updates
Windows 11 24H2 Home and Pro lost monthly updates on October 13, 2026, while the 26H2 enablement package is still a phased rollout.
Windows 11 24H2 Home and Pro reached the end of updates on October 13, 2026. Microsoft’s October security package, KB5127648, is the last one those editions will get. PCs that stay on 24H2 Home or Pro now miss monthly security fixes, even if they still boot.
The company wants those machines on Windows 11 26H2. That move is a small enablement package, and it is still going out in phases, so some eligible PCs have not been offered it yet.
The October 13 Patch Is the Last One for Home and Pro
Microsoft put the cutoff in the notes for KB5127648, the October 2026 monthly security update. After that package, 24H2 Home and Pro no longer receive monthly security updates or the optional non-security preview releases.
Windows 11, version 24H2 Home and Pro has reached end of updates. The October 2026 monthly security update is the last update available for these editions. Devices running these editions will no longer receive monthly security and non-security preview updates containing protections from the latest security threats.
KB5127648, Microsoft Support
The same package still serves versions that remain in servicing. On 24H2 it lands as OS build 26100.9711. On 25H2 it is 26200.9711. On 26H2 it is 26300.9711. Microsoft’s notes call it the last update available for these editions of 24H2 Home and Pro, then point people at a newer Windows 11 version.
The PC does not shut down on that date. What stops is the patch stream: security fixes, preview updates, known-issue repairs, time zone data, and technical support for that version. A laptop that only comes out for taxes or school logins will look fine, which is how machines sit unpatched.
Pro Education and Pro for Workstations share the Home and Pro date. Microsoft’s lifecycle listing also says 24H2 was the last supported version of Windows 11 SE, so those school laptops have no newer feature update to take. Windows 10 Enterprise LTSB 2016 hit the same October 13, 2026 cutoff; Microsoft’s path there is a later LTSC release, not 26H2.
26H2 Turns On Code the PC Already Has
Windows 11 26H2, the Windows 11 2026 Update, became available on September 29, 2026. John Cable, vice president of product management for Windows servicing and delivery, said eligible 24H2 and 25H2 devices move with an enablement package and a single restart.
That is the twist. 24H2, 25H2, and 26H2 share a common core and the same system files. Microsoft’s KB5121794 page says 26H2 features already arrived in monthly quality updates on 24H2 and 25H2, sitting dormant until a small master switch that activates 26H2 features turns them on. The download is closer to a monthly update than to a full reinstall.
Cable also said Microsoft is using a controlled feature rollout, and that the company may place safeguard holds on devices where it sees a compatibility issue. Availability expands over time through Windows Update. Microsoft has not published a date when every eligible 24H2 Home or Pro PC will see the offer.
On October 5, 2026, eight days before the cutoff and five years after Windows 11 first shipped, the Windows Update account posted the same end-of-updates reminder that named 24H2 Home and Pro alongside Windows 10 Enterprise LTSB 2016.
Reminder: Windows 11, version 24H2 Home and Pro, and Windows 10 Enterprise LTSB 2016, reach end of updates on October 13, 2026.

A wipe-and-load onto 26H2 is a different job from that switch. People who took the light path are flipping a version flag. People who reimaged onto 26H2 took on a new install, and early quality complaints about that route already showed up. The enablement package is the move Microsoft documented for 24H2 and 25H2 PCs that already have current monthly updates.
Home and Pro Get 24 Months of Each Release
Installing 26H2 resets the support clock. Cable said that means 24 months of support for Home and Pro and 36 months for Enterprise and Education. Microsoft’s table of supported Windows 11 versions by edition puts those clocks on specific Patch Tuesday dates.
WINDOWS 11 END OF UPDATES BY VERSION
| Version | Home, Pro end | Enterprise, Education end | OS build |
|---|---|---|---|
| 26H2 | October 10, 2028 | October 9, 2029 | 26300 |
| 25H2 | October 12, 2027 | October 10, 2028 | 26200 |
| 24H2 | October 13, 2026 | October 12, 2027 | 26100 |
| 23H2 | November 11, 2025 | November 10, 2026 | 22631 |
24H2 Home and Pro are already past that line. 24H2 Enterprise, Education, Enterprise multi-session, and IoT Enterprise keep monthly updates until October 12, 2027. A fleet report that only says “Windows 11 24H2” can hide Home and Pro boxes that just went dark next to Enterprise boxes that still have a year.
23H2 Home and Pro already lost updates on November 11, 2025. 23H2 Enterprise and Education get their last monthly security update on November 10, 2026. Enterprise LTSC 2024, which is built on 24H2, is listed through October 9, 2029.
How to Move Off 24H2 If Windows Update Is Quiet
25H2 is the quiet bridge. It has been generally available since September 30, 2025, it shares the 24H2 servicing branch, and Home and Pro on 25H2 stay in updates until October 12, 2027. A September 14, 2026 Microsoft 365 Message Center notice still told admins to move 24H2 Home and Pro devices to 25H2, two weeks before 26H2 shipped. Both versions now sit on the same Windows Update screen.
CHECK THE VERSION, THEN ASK FOR THE UPDATE
- Confirm 24H2: Open Settings, go to System, then About, and read Version under Windows specifications.
- Turn on the fast toggle: Open Settings, then Windows Update, and turn on Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available.
- Check for 26H2: Select Check for updates and install Windows 11, version 26H2 if it is listed, then restart when asked.
- Take 25H2 if 26H2 is missing: Install the Windows 11, version 25H2 feature update if that is the offer on the page, which keeps Home and Pro patched until October 12, 2027.
- Leave the toggle on: If neither feature update appears, keep the toggle enabled; Microsoft says the 26H2 offer expands over the coming months and then installs with one restart.
The enablement package needs a current 24H2 or 25H2 device. Microsoft’s KB5121794 page requires the September 22, 2026 preview, KB5124010, or a later cumulative update before the switch will apply. A PC that skipped months of updates may have to catch up on quality updates before 26H2 will even be offered.
Windows 10 Still Ships Security Fixes Through ESU
Windows 10 as a product reached end of updates on October 14, 2025. Home users who enrolled in Extended Security Updates still received an October 2026 security package. Microsoft’s consumer page says you can enroll in the consumer ESU program through October 12, 2027, and that coverage already in place continues to that date.
There is no matching ESU listing for Windows 11 24H2 Home and Pro. The consumer program is written for Windows 10, version 22H2. A 24H2 Home PC that missed 26H2 and 25H2 is simply off the monthly train. A Windows 10 Home PC that enrolled can keep getting Critical and Important security updates for almost another year.
That split will confuse people who thought Windows 11 was the supported path and Windows 10 was the one that had already died. For a home box, the question is no longer which logo is on the desktop. It is whether that specific version and edition is still named on Microsoft’s servicing table.
Safeguard Holds Can Block 26H2 on Eligible PCs
Cable said rollout holds can sit on a device when Windows Update detects a known compatibility issue. Those holds are why an eligible 24H2 PC can sit on an unsupported Home or Pro edition after October 13, 2026, even with the fast-update toggle on. The machine is waiting on Microsoft’s targeting, not on a full OS download.
WHAT WE KNOW
- The cutoff: 24H2 Home and Pro no longer get monthly security or preview updates after KB5127648.
- The intended path: 26H2 is offered as an enablement package on 24H2 and 25H2, with a controlled rollout and possible safeguard holds.
- The backup path: 25H2 Home and Pro remain supported until October 12, 2027 on the same servicing branch.
- The 2027 cert dates: Windows Update certificates expire on May 17, 2027 and June 19, 2027; 25H2 and later need no extra action, and 24H2 needs the September 2025 security update or later before June 19, 2027 to keep talking to Windows Update.
WHAT IS UNCONFIRMED
- Rollout length: Microsoft has not said when every eligible 24H2 Home and Pro device will be offered 26H2.
- Forced 25H2: Older admin notes said unmanaged 24H2 Home and Pro PCs would receive 25H2 automatically; Microsoft has not restated that force-move in the 26H2 announcement or in KB5127648.
A 24H2 Home or Pro PC that installed monthly updates through KB5127648 already has a later-than-September-2025 patch, so the 2027 certificate swap is not the immediate problem. The immediate problem is that no new security content will be published for those editions. Unsupported Windows versions that never received the replacement certificates lose Windows Update access after the 2027 expiry dates, and Microsoft’s only listed fix for those is a move to a supported release. WSUS-managed devices are outside that certificate change.
Until 26H2 shows up, the supported Home and Pro move that does not wait on the phased switch is 25H2. After that, 26H2 resets the clock to October 10, 2028 for those editions. Microsoft has not given a date for the last eligible 24H2 Home or Pro PC to receive that offer.
Frequently Asked Questions
When Did Windows 11 24H2 Home and Pro Stop Getting Updates?
Microsoft’s servicing table and KB5127648 both use October 13, 2026. The same date covers Pro Education, Pro for Workstations, and Windows 11 SE. Microsoft’s lifecycle listing says 24H2 was the last supported version for SE, so those devices have no 25H2 or 26H2 edition to join.
What Build Is the Last 24H2 Home and Pro Update?
KB5127648 raises 24H2 to 26100.9711. The same download raises 25H2 to 26200.9711 and 26H2 to 26300.9711, and it includes servicing stack update KB5127647 (build 26100.9703). Microsoft still lists a USB Audio Class 1.0 bug as a known issue in that package; some devices show Code 10, no sound, or dead volume controls, with a partial fix in the September 14, 2026 out-of-band update KB5129195.
Can a 24H2 PC Stay on 25H2 Instead of 26H2?
Yes. 25H2 Home and Pro are supported until October 12, 2027, and 25H2 is build 26200 on the same core files as 24H2. Microsoft’s September 14, 2026 Message Center note named 25H2 as the destination for 24H2 Home and Pro before 26H2 was generally available. 26H2 then buys Home and Pro a further year, through October 10, 2028.
Is There Extended Security Updates for Windows 11 24H2?
Microsoft’s consumer ESU page covers Windows 10 only. Enrollment can be free if PC settings already sync, or by redeeming 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points, or by a one-time $30 USD purchase (or local equivalent, plus tax), and one license can cover up to 10 devices through October 12, 2027. No parallel ESU SKU is listed for 24H2 Home and Pro.
Will a 24H2 Home or Pro PC Stop Working After the Cutoff?
No. Windows keeps starting and running. What ends is servicing for that version: monthly security content, preview updates, known-issue fixes, time zone updates, and Microsoft support for 24H2 Home and Pro. Callers after that date are directed to a newer Windows 11 version.
What Does a PC Need Before the 26H2 Enablement Package?
It must already run Windows 11 24H2 or 25H2, and it must have September 22, 2026’s KB5124010 (OS build 26100.9546 preview) or a later cumulative update installed. KB5121794 does not replace earlier updates; it only turns on 26H2 features already present, then requires a restart.
