Bitcoin’s Bounce From $81,017 Follows Yields and Oil
Bitcoin bounced from $81,017 to $84,074 as the 10-year yield eased toward 5.19% and WTI slipped to $92, after an $811.8 million long flush and before CPI.
Bitcoin bounced from $81,017 to $84,074 on October 13, more than 3%, after leveraged longs were wiped out overnight. The rebound tracked a drop in the U.S. 10-year yield toward 5.19% and a slip in WTI crude to $92, with Wednesday’s CPI still ahead.
Corporate treasury buying and a confirmed Russia-Ukraine ceasefire are the easy labels on the tape. The mechanical sequence is a long flush, a rates-and-oil relief bounce, and a test of the 50-day moving average into inflation data.
Monday Flushed $811.8 Million in Longs
CoinGlass said crypto futures liquidations ran to $811.8 million over 24 hours, and 84.5% of that book was longs. The largest print on the recorded feeds was a $9.7 million bitcoin long on Binance, closed at $81,772.8 at 23:06 UTC on October 12.
That is the opposite of a short-squeeze story. Forced selling hit buyers who were already long into the low, then a smaller burst of short covering showed up only after the bounce was underway. Ethereum led several of the next-largest long closes, which is why ether, solana, and XRP still looked heavy while bitcoin snapped back.
FORCED CLOSES BY UTC DAY
| UTC day | Longs closed | Shorts closed | Total |
|---|---|---|---|
| October 12 | $354.1 million | $68.1 million | $422.2 million |
| October 11 | $46.6 million | $89.6 million | $136.2 million |
| October 8 | $846.0 million | $100.1 million | $946.1 million |
The recorded Oct. 12 long liquidations on 11 venues show the same tilt: $354.1 million of longs against $68.1 million of shorts. October 8 was a larger long wipeout, so this week’s $81,017 low was a second flush, not a one-off.
The 10-Year Gave the Bounce Its Air
U.S. 10-year yields fell toward 5.19% on Tuesday, extending a retreat from last week’s 5.365% peak, the highest since 2002. The dollar index eased toward 102.35 after tagging 102.607, an 18-month high. WTI traded at $92, down 1.86%, while Brent was $105.06, down 1.49%.
THE MACRO TAPE ON OCTOBER 13
- 10-year yield: Toward 5.19%, off a 5.365% peak.
- Dollar index: Near 102.35, off 102.607.
- WTI crude: $92 a barrel.
- Brent crude: $105.06 a barrel.
Those four numbers are the channel bitcoin actually traded through. A lower 10-year and a softer dollar reduce the hurdle rate on an asset that pays no coupon. Cheaper oil, if it sticks, takes heat out of the inflation print that arrives Wednesday. Bitcoin behaved like a high-beta rates trade, the same frame as a high-beta bet on a credit break, not like a coin that had just received a peace dividend.
Spot bitcoin ETFs had already leaked about $681 million in the October 5 to 9 week. The bounce did not start with fresh spot demand. It started when yields and oil gave leveraged books room to cover.
Trump’s Oil Talk Did Not End the War
President Donald Trump said both Vladimir Putin and Volodymyr Zelenskiy want a deal to end the war in Ukraine, then added that “they don’t know how.” He also said China and Russia are not helping Iran because “They have too much to lose, and we would know about it.” The White House rapid-response account posted the remarks on October 13.

Prices are coming down and as soon as the war ends, which will be very soon with Iran, the oil will drop like a rock
Donald Trump, Rapid Response 47 post, October 13, 2026
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said the ceasefire talk had caught him by surprise. Russian strikes on Ukrainian energy sites continued, with at least six facilities hit in one round of attacks. Moscow had not publicly signed the energy truce Trump described, and Saudi-Houthi fighting still sat over the same oil tape.
Oil can fall on a headline. A barrel at $92 is still expensive against a 2025 close of $57.46. Until physical supply actually rises, bitcoin is pricing a hope about energy, not a settlement.
Strategy Bought 250 Coins Above This Dip
Strategy Inc, the Tysons Corner bitcoin treasury firm led by executive chairman Michael Saylor, bought 250 bitcoin last week, not into Monday’s $81,017 print. The company announced the lot on October 12 for purchases made from October 5 to October 11.
THE OCTOBER 12 TREASURY UPDATE
- The lot: 250 bitcoin funded with $21.0 million from MSTR stock sales and $0.5 million of cash, $21.5 million in all, about $86,000 a coin.
- The week before: 334 bitcoin for $28.7 million at $85,838.8, in an October 5 8-K covering October 1 to 4.
- Holdings: 848,000 bitcoin as of October 4, then 848,250 after the 250-coin add.
- Cash stack: A $4.88 billion USD Reserve and $640.5 million of USD Cash as of October 11, plus $192 million of STRC preferred bought back.
That bid was booked above this week’s low. Weekly size also shrank, from 334 coins to 250. Remaining capacity on the preferred repurchase program was $354.8 million, with $1.0 billion still authorized for MSTR stock buybacks. Strategy is still a holder of more than 4% of the 21 million cap. It was not the buyer of the $81,017 wick.
Binance Funding Is Positive Again
Binance funding flipped back positive as soon as the bounce got going. The BTCUSDT perpetual’s eight-hour rate was +0.0082% on October 13, about 8.9% annualized. Longs are paying shorts again.
BINANCE BTCUSDT FUNDING PRINTS
| Settlement (UTC) | Eight-hour rate | Annualized |
|---|---|---|
| October 13, 8:00 a.m. | +0.0083% | +9.1% |
| October 11, 12:00 a.m. | -0.0027% | -3.0% |
| October 7, 8:00 a.m. | -0.0037% | -4.0% |
Negative funding showed up in several settlements from October 5 through October 11, with the weakest print at -0.0037% on October 7. The 30-settlement average is still only +0.0016%, or about 1.7% annualized. Open interest on that contract was $7.85 billion, up 0.02% over 24 hours, with $14.50 billion of volume. Leverage came back as a modest long-pay rate, not as a 3% explosion in open interest.
When shorts pay longs, a squeeze has fuel. When longs pay shorts after a bounce, that fuel is already spent. The $84,074 print arrived with the second regime in place.
A 4-Hour Outside Bar Hit After the Selloff
Cheds Trading, the CMT-track analyst who posts as @BigCheds, flagged a 4-hour outside bar with bullish engulfing after the selloff. An outside bar is a candle that takes out the prior candle’s high and low. A bullish engulfing after a dump is a reclaim, not a breakout.
$BTC massive 4H outside bar with bullish engulfing
Cheds Trading (@BigCheds), October 13, 2026
The 50-day moving average sat under that reclaim, which is why the $81,017 low looks neat on a daily chart. The first run at $84,074 already faded, and bitcoin later traded near $83,446 on the Binance mark. A hold in the high $82,000s is what would show that buyers absorbed the flush into CPI. A path toward $90,000 only comes back if that zone holds. The wick off $81,017 does not, by itself, reopen it.
Desks that mapped the drop from the mid-$86,000s into the low $80,000s are sitting out the print rather than chasing the outside bar. That is the sane read of a 4-hour pattern that still has Wednesday’s number in front of it.
Why Wednesday’s CPI Can Unwind the Bounce
Wednesday’s U.S. CPI is the next scheduled shock. Headline inflation is expected to rise 0.6% on the month, largely from energy, with core at 0.2%. The year-on-year figure is seen at 3.6%, up from 3.4% in August. Thursday brings PPI and retail sales. The federal funds target was 3.75% to 4.00% as of October 9, and last week’s 5.365% 10-year already priced a hawkish path.
THE WEEK AROUND THE $81,017 LOW
- October 5 to 11: Strategy adds 250 bitcoin at about $86,000 a coin, above this week’s low.
- October 11: Binance BTCUSDT funding prints -0.0027% at midnight UTC.
- October 12: Longs dominate liquidations; bitcoin trades down to $81,017; Strategy publishes the 250-coin update.
- October 13: Price reaches $84,074; the 10-year yield eases toward 5.19%; WTI trades at $92.
- October 14: September CPI is due, with 0.6% headline and 0.2% core in the consensus.
WHAT WE KNOW
- The low: Bitcoin bounced from $81,017 to $84,074 after CoinGlass’s $811.8 million 24-hour flush, 84.5% longs.
- The channel: The 10-year yield moved toward 5.19% and WTI to $92, with the dollar off an 18-month high.
- The bid that missed: Strategy’s 250 coins were bought October 5 to 11, not at the wick.
WHAT IS UNCONFIRMED
- The ceasefire: Neither Kyiv nor Moscow has signed the energy truce Trump described, and strikes on power sites continued.
- The 50-day: A daily hold through the CPI window is still open. A hot core reading can send the 10-year back toward 5.278% resistance and pull the dollar toward 102.607 again.
A soft core at 0.2% or below would give the 10-year room toward 5.081% and keep oil’s dip working in bitcoin’s favor. A hot core would restore the hurdle rate that broke longs on October 12. The $84,074 high is a relief print on a 5.19% 10-year and a $92 barrel, taken after an $811.8 million long flush, with Strategy’s last coins still booked near $86,000.
