Netflix Games sees a surge in popularity thanks to GTA trilogy

Netflix Games, the streaming giant’s gaming division, has reported a threefold increase in user engagement in 2023, largely driven by the addition of the Grand Theft Auto trilogy to its library. The company said that GTA was its most successful launch to date, with some customers signing up for Netflix just to play the games.

Netflix Games, which launched in 2022 as a free feature for Netflix subscribers, has been steadily adding more titles to its platform, including popular indie games like Hades, Dead Cells, Braid, Death’s Door and Katana Zero. It also developed its own games based on its original shows, such as Money Heist and The Dragon Prince.

The company said that it was pleased with the progress of its gaming division, despite it being small and not yet material relative to its film and series business. It expressed its intention to broaden its offerings and continue to invest in the gaming space.

GTA trilogy boosts Netflix Games engagement

The biggest boost for Netflix Games came in December 2023, when it added the Grand Theft Auto trilogy to its service. The trilogy, which consists of GTA III, GTA: Vice City and GTA: San Andreas, is widely regarded as one of the most influential and successful video game franchises of all time.

Netflix said that GTA was its most successful launch to date in terms of installs and engagement, with some customers signing up for Netflix just to play the games. The company did not disclose how many people downloaded or played the trilogy, however.

The GTA trilogy was also released on other platforms, such as PC, consoles and mobile devices, in November 2023, but it faced criticism for its poor graphics, bugs and performance issues. Netflix said that it worked closely with Rockstar Games, the developer of the GTA series, to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience for its users.

Netflix sees a strong growth in subscribers

Netflix Games was not the only reason for Netflix’s success in 2023. The company also reported that it added 13.1 million subscribers in the last three months of the year, the highest number since the pandemic-driven growth in 2020. The total number of Netflix subscribers around the world is now 260 million.

The company attributed its strong performance to its diverse and high-quality content, such as Squid Game, The Witcher, The Crown, Bridgerton and The Queen’s Gambit. It also announced that Squid Game season 2 would be released sometime in 2024.

Netflix said that it was confident in its ability to compete and grow in the streaming market, despite the increasing competition from rivals such as Disney+, Amazon Prime Video, HBO Max and Apple TV+.
