The Junior European Judo Championships will kick off tomorrow in The Hague, Netherlands, with eight GB judoka eager to showcase their skills and talents. The four-day competition will feature some of the best young judoka from across Europe, competing in various weight categories and a team event.
GB Team Features Medal Contenders and Debutants
The GB team consists of four men and two women who have been selected for the individual event, as well as an extra male and female judoka who have joined the team for the final day of the competition. The team features a mix of experienced and debutant judoka, who have all proven themselves at national and international level.
Among the medal contenders are Lewis Fryer (Rush Judo; Laurie Rush) in the -60kg category and Charlotte Jenman (Tonbridge JC; Ben Urban) in the -52kg category. Fryer enters as 6th seed and has won gold at the Kaunas Junior European Cup and silver at the Birmingham Junior European Cup this year. Jenman is a 2022 Cadet European Championship bronze medallist who has also claimed silver at the Kaunas Junior European Cup and gold at the Birmingham Junior European Cup this summer.
Other judoka who have impressed this year are Luke Davies (Ealing JC; Jo Crowley) in the -73kg category, Daniel Ede (Westcroft JC; Andrew Ede) in the +100kg category, and Anya Hassan (Middlesbrough JC; Garth Illingworth) in the -78kg category. Davies is seeded 7th and has competed across the globe, winning gold at the Lima Junior Panamerican Cup, silver at the Sarajevo Junior European Cup, and bronze at the Tunis Junior African Cup. Ede has won back-to-back bronze medals at the Kaunas and Birmingham Junior European Cups, while Hassan has narrowly missed out on medals at the same events but bounced back with bronze at the Paks Junior European Cup.
The team also includes Eryk Neumann (Hardy Spicer 83; Fitzroy Davies) in the -73kg category, who has won bronze at the Kaunas Junior European Cup, as well as Jacob Callaghan (Destination Judo; Colin Woods) and Ellie Gilbert (SKK; Peter Blood), who have been selected for the team event.
