Woman, 61, Left in Debt After Falling for Egyptian Toyboy She Met Online

A 61-year-old British woman says she now faces mounting debt after calling off an engagement with a man 35 years her junior whom she met on TikTok. What began as an online romance turned into travel, gifts and heartbreak that left her both emotionally and financially strained.

How Their Unlikely Love Story Began on TikTok

British chef Jacqueline Dube met the young Egyptian pastry chef on a TikTok live stream while she was chatting with family online. The 26-year-old man joined the group livestream, complimented her looks and soon after they began messaging privately. Over months of WhatsApp chats, the pair developed what Jacqueline believed was a deep emotional connection despite the 35-year age gap and more than 2,500 miles separating the UK and Egypt.

She said the early interactions made her feel seen and wanted. “I thought he saw me for who I was,” she told reporters, recalling how he repeatedly professed his love. The young man told her he was attracted to older women and soon he had also introduced her to his family via video calls long before they ever met in person.

The Trips, Proposal and Growing Doubts

After communicating online for 16 months, Jacqueline felt compelled to meet him in person. In September last year she flew to Egypt to visit him and his family for eight days. During that first trip they spent time together, shared meals, boat trips and even intimate moments, according to her account. As she became closer to him and his relatives, she began to imagine a future together.

A second visit followed a few months later. During that trip he proposed marriage, and the couple began discussing wedding plans. Flowers, a limo greeting and celebration moments welcomed her on arrival. At that point Jacqueline felt they were on a clear path toward life as a married couple.

But when she returned home to the UK, reality set in. She began to question the sustainability of the relationship given the cultural differences, long distance and the financial toll of repeated flights, accommodation and gifts. It was only then she calculated that she had spent around 4,000 pounds over the course of the relationship.

Financial Impact and Emotional Fallout

Upon bringing up her financial concerns with her then partner, the relationship quickly disintegrated. Jacqueline says the focus on money caused tension and ultimately led her to end the engagement. She now says she feels “in debt” and struggles to pay her bills after spending savings and taking on extra costs for trips and presents.

“I’m in debt. I’ve not been able to pay my bills,” she said. She added that her attachment to the man developed after being on her own for a decade, and that she wanted to prove her critics wrong. But now, she sees advice from friends and family in a different light, acknowledging she may have ignored warnings.

Jacqueline also admitted she still feels emotional pain. “I still cry thinking I’ll never see him again,” she said, highlighting the emotional cost of investing in an international relationship that didn’t materialise into a stable future.

Perspectives and Wider Social Conversation

Stories of online relationships crossing borders and generations are becoming common in the age of social media, especially on platforms like TikTok where users of all ages can interact. Egypt, in particular, has a vibrant and youthful digital population with many social media creators engaging audiences globally.

However, experts often caution about the risks of long-distance online romances. Without meeting early in person or discussing shared goals and expectations, misunderstandings can grow. Financial disparity in cross-border relationships can also create complex dynamics, where one partner’s resources and expectations differ significantly from the other’s.

Critics on social media have also debated the nature of such relationships, with some suggesting that individuals may be drawn into emotional or financial vulnerability when seeking companionship online. Others argue that age gaps should not automatically be framed as problematic, and that genuine connections can exist despite differences.

A Cautionary Tale for Online Romances

Jacqueline’s experience serves as a reminder of how powerful emotions can shape decision-making, especially when someone feels lonely or undervalued. Despite her heartfelt belief in the relationship, the emotional investment came with real-world consequences that she now must face.

Her story highlights the need for careful consideration before committing financially or emotionally to relationships formed primarily online across vast distances. It also underscores how social media platforms can bring people together in unexpected ways, both positive and negative.
