Galaxy S24 design leaks reveal flat edges and familiar camera layout

Samsung’s next flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S24, is expected to launch in January 2024, but we already have a good idea of what it will look like thanks to some leaked renders and videos. The images show a design that is very similar to the Galaxy S23, with a few minor changes.

Flat edges and no camera bump

One of the most noticeable changes in the Galaxy S24 design is the adoption of flat edges, similar to the iPhone 12 and Samsung’s own foldable phones. This gives the phone a more angular and sleek appearance, but it might also affect the ergonomics and comfort of holding the device. The Galaxy S23 had curved edges that made it easier to grip.

Another change is the elimination of the camera bump on the back of the phone. The Galaxy S23 had a prominent protrusion that housed the three rear cameras, but the Galaxy S24 has a flat back with the cameras slightly raised. This might make the phone more stable when placed on a flat surface, but it also means that the cameras are more exposed to scratches and dust.

The camera layout is also slightly different, with the LED flash now placed between the first and second camera, instead of next to the first one. The cameras themselves are rumored to have the same resolution as the Galaxy S23: 50-megapixel main, 12-megapixel ultrawide, and 10-megapixel telephoto with 3x optical zoom.

Similar display and button placement

The Galaxy S24 is expected to have a 6.17-inch display, which is slightly larger than the Galaxy S23’s 6.1-inch screen. The resolution is likely to be 1080p, with a peak brightness of 2500 nits. The display will have a hole-punch cutout for the selfie camera, which is rumored to be 10-megapixel.

The button placement is unchanged from the Galaxy S23, with the power button and volume rocker on the right side of the phone. There is also a UWB antenna on the right side, which can be used for precise location tracking and data transfer. The bottom of the phone has a USB-C port, a SIM card slot, a microphone, and a speaker.

No major changes in performance and battery

The Galaxy S24 is expected to be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor in the US, which is likely to offer improved performance and efficiency over the Snapdragon 888 that powered the Galaxy S23. However, in other markets, Samsung might use its own Exynos processor, which could have different performance characteristics.

The battery size of the Galaxy S24 is reportedly rated at 4,000mAh, which is the same as the Galaxy S23. The maximum fast charging speed is also unchanged at 25W. It is unclear if Samsung will offer wireless charging or reverse wireless charging features on the Galaxy S24.

Early launch date and possible colors

Samsung usually launches its flagship phones in February or March, but this time it might launch them earlier than usual. According to leaker Ice Universe, Samsung will unveil the Galaxy S24 on January 18th, 2024, along with the Galaxy S24+ and Galaxy S24 Ultra.

The colors of the Galaxy S24 are not confirmed yet, but some leaks suggest that it will come in black, white, green, and purple variants. The renders show a glossy finish on the back of the phone, but it is possible that Samsung will offer different finishes or textures for different colors.
