Israel Heat Wave Pushes Hospitals as Fires Loom

Israel enters a four-day extreme heat wave on Friday with peaks forecast near 47°C (116°F) in northern valleys and the Sea of Galilee region, dry air that heightens fire danger, and UV levels that hit the extreme category on the coast. The Israel Meteorological Service calls it the season’s most significant and prolonged event.

IMS director Dr. Amir Givati warned of very low humidity and the resulting fire concern while temperatures climb six degrees above seasonal norms in the hardest-hit inland zones.

The Forecast Hits Hardest Inland

Peak heat arrives from the north. The Galilee, Golan Heights and Jordan Valley take the brunt, while the coastal plain stays humid and sticky. Relief is not expected until Tuesday.

Givati told Ynet the wave would scorch the Galilee and Golan. “There will also be dry winds and very low humidity, which means we are concerned about fires during these days. Every cigarette butt that is thrown away becomes dangerous when strong winds begin.”

At Ein Gev on the Sea of Galilee a lifeguard manager described the water already feeling “like stepping into soup” by midday. Resorts remain fully booked.

Europe’s Toll Arrives as Context

The Israeli event follows a record-smashing European heat wave in late June that produced around 1,000 additional deaths in France over three peak days alone. Public Health France recorded daily deaths jumping past 1,200-1,400 against a normal baseline near 900-1,000, with 85 percent of the excess among people 65 and older. Germany set new daytime and nighttime records, wildfires broke out in munitions-contaminated forests, and police in Berlin used water cannons to cool crowds.

A World Weather Attribution study found the European extremes would have been virtually impossible five decades ago and are now 200 times more likely. The same climate ratchet is visible in Israel’s recent summers. Egypt’s heat wave that eased this week showed the regional pattern still active.

United Nations projections warn the planet is likely to shatter hottest-year records in the next five years. The World Meteorological Organization projects rapid Arctic warming as well. Locally the dry northern winds arriving with this wave turn every spark into a threat that last year’s events already illustrated.

Who Feels It First

The Health Ministry has told the public, especially the elderly, children, pregnant women and people with chronic disease, to avoid sun exposure, skip unnecessary exertion, drink water constantly and stay in air-conditioned or well-ventilated spaces. Never leave children, elderly or disabled people in an unattended vehicle without air conditioning. The same rule applies to animals.

According to the World Health Organization, heat stress is a leading cause of weather-related deaths and worsens cardiovascular disease, diabetes, mental health conditions and asthma while raising accident and some infection risks. Heatstroke is a medical emergency.

Dr. Khaled Atalla, director of emergency medicine at Galilee Medical Center in Nahariya, said extreme heatwaves “can rapidly deteriorate into a life-threatening situation.” Last August’s similar wave produced multiple heatstroke cases.

Hospitals Already Carry Extra Days

The temperature numbers grab attention. The quieter load lands on the health system. A new Taub Center study covering 2010-2023 found heat stress drives clear jumps in emergency visits and longer stays for the very conditions that make people most vulnerable.

In high-heat-stress weeks, ER visits rose about 41 percent for lung disease diagnoses, 28 percent for kidney disease and 18 percent for cardiovascular disease compared with lower-stress weeks. The strongest links appeared for respiratory and kidney problems. A one-unit rise in the heat-stress index added roughly 5,500 excess hospital days per year across the diseases examined. Women’s length of stay increased more than men’s at every temperature step.

We are used to peaks of hospital visits in the winter because of influenza, rather than in the summer.

Maya Sadeh, who led the study, made that point while calling for extra staffing and beds during extreme heat. Between 2014 and 2025 an average two-unit rise in summer heat stress is estimated to have cost the system about NIS 380 million ($127 million) over a decade, mainly from longer stays. Affluent central-district patients sought ER care at higher rates, possibly because air conditioning use reduced acclimatization or because hospitals sit closer.

The Taub Center findings on excess hospital days show Israel’s already high bed-occupancy rates leave little slack. Policymakers must treat summer peaks as they treat winter flu waves. WMO guidance on extreme heat risks stresses the same multi-sector preparation.

Dry Winds Raise the Fire Stakes

Low humidity and northern dry winds turn the heat wave into a fire-weather event. The Nature and Parks Authority has banned lighting fires in nature reserves and national parks except in designated areas and may close some hiking trails. The Israel Electric Corporation asked the public to stay vigilant, report tree branches near power lines or fires near electrical facilities to the 103 hotline, and treat every hazard seriously.

Givati’s warning was blunt: every small spark can become a major fire under these winds. Past July and August events already forced firefighters into residential edges and forest margins. Power demand for air conditioning will climb at the same moment the grid faces heat stress on transformers and lines. That pressure sits on top of Israel’s power grid already under strain from rapid growth in high-demand sectors.

Records From Last Summer Still Stand

This wave is not arriving in a vacuum. August 2025 produced a national high of 49.7°C at Kibbutz Gilgal in the Jordan Valley, a new local record, along with 49°C-class readings near the Sea of Galilee and multiple station records elsewhere. Overnight lows at Sodom failed to drop below 36.6°C, another extreme. The all-time mark of 54°C from 1942 still stands, but modern measurement shows summers growing more consistently hot. 2024 was already Israel’s hottest summer on IMS records since 1950.

Those recent peaks produced heatstroke deaths and stretched emergency services. The current forecast sits just below those absolute highs yet lasts longer and arrives with the same dry-fire combination. Adaptation is visible in widespread air conditioning, yet the Taub data show the health system still absorbs measurable extra load.

Friday’s start therefore tests both public habits and institutional slack. Temperatures will fall by midweek. The hospital-day and fire-risk accounting will continue after the thermometers drop.
