CES 2024: How Asia is leading the way in flying cars, baby tech and AI

CES 2024, the world’s largest consumer technology expo, is underway in Las Vegas, showcasing the latest innovations and trends in various sectors. Among the thousands of exhibitors, many are from Asia, demonstrating their prowess and potential in fields such as flying cars, baby tech and AI. Here are some of the highlights from the Asian participants at CES 2024.

One of the most eye-catching and futuristic products at CES 2024 is the flying car, or more precisely, the electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) vehicle. Hyundai, the South Korean automaker, unveiled a prototype of its new eVTOL, called the SA-1, which it plans to launch commercially by 2028. The SA-1 can carry up to four passengers and fly at speeds of up to 290 km/h, with a range of 100 km. Hyundai is collaborating with Uber Elevate, the ride-hailing giant’s aerial mobility division, to develop a network of skyports and air taxis.

Another contender in the flying car market is Xpeng, the Chinese electric vehicle maker. Xpeng presented a flying capsule for two people, called the Kiwi Go, which it claims can fly autonomously and safely in urban environments. The Kiwi Go is designed to be compact, lightweight and low-noise, and can be controlled via a smartphone app. Xpeng said it has conducted over 15,000 test flights in China and plans to launch the product in select markets by 2026.

Baby tech gets smarter and cuter with LG and Samsung

For parents who want to keep an eye on their babies and toddlers, CES 2024 offers a range of smart and cute devices that can monitor, entertain and educate their children. LG, the South Korean electronics giant, introduced a wearable device for babies, called the LG Baby Care, which can track the baby’s temperature, heart rate, sleep quality and activity level. The device can also play soothing sounds and music, and alert the parents if the baby is crying or in distress. The LG Baby Care can be attached to the baby’s clothing or crib, and can be paired with a smartphone app or a smart speaker.

Samsung, another South Korean electronics giant, showcased a robot companion for kids, called the Samsung Buddy. The Samsung Buddy is a spherical robot that can roll around, interact with the child, and display various expressions and animations on its screen. The robot can also teach the child basic skills, such as colors, shapes and numbers, and play games and stories with them. The Samsung Buddy can also connect with other smart devices, such as TVs, cameras and lights, and act as a remote control or a security camera.

AI gets more creative and generative with AWS and Siemens

Artificial intelligence (AI) is not only getting smarter and faster, but also more creative and generative, as demonstrated by some of the products and services at CES 2024. AWS, the cloud computing arm of Amazon, and Siemens, the German industrial conglomerate, announced a partnership to bring generative AI to various industries and applications. Generative AI is a type of AI that can create new and original content, such as images, text, music and code, based on existing data and models.

AWS and Siemens are integrating Amazon Bedrock, a service that offers a choice of high-performing foundation models from leading AI companies via a single API, with Mendix, a low-code platform that is part of the Siemens Xcelerator portfolio. This will allow more customers to build, scale and supercharge their applications with the power of generative AI on AWS. Customers can select the generative AI model that best suits their specific use case and quickly and securely incorporate that model into their applications. This will make software development simpler, faster and more efficient, allowing users to incorporate generative AI functions in just a few clicks.

These are just some of the examples of how Asia is leading the way in flying cars, baby tech and AI at CES 2024. The event will continue until January 14, with more announcements and demonstrations expected from the Asian participants and others.
