OnePlus Open: A foldable phone with a huge camera bump and a hefty price tag

OnePlus is set to enter the foldable smartphone market with its upcoming device, the OnePlus Open. The company has been teasing the launch of the Open for a while, but now we have a clear look at the design and the rumored price of the device, thanks to some leaked renders and reports.

OnePlus Open design: A faux leather back and a massive camera island

The OnePlus Open will reportedly come in two color options: a faux leather black and a glass green. The device will have a 6.31-inch outer screen and a 7.8-inch flexible main screen sourced from BOE. Both screens will have AMOLED panels with 120Hz refresh rate and high resolution.

The most striking feature of the OnePlus Open is the huge camera bump on the back, which houses three cameras and a Hasselblad logo. OnePlus has partnered with the Swedish camera maker for its flagship phones, and it seems the Open will also benefit from some custom filters and tuning from Hasselblad.

The renders also show a side-mounted fingerprint scanner, a USB-C port, and a speaker grille at the bottom. There is no visible headphone jack or SIM tray on the device.

OnePlus Open specs: A Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset and up to 16GB of RAM

The OnePlus Open will be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset, which is the latest flagship processor from the chipmaker. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 has a 3.36GHz octa-core CPU and an Adreno 740 GPU, along with support for 5G, Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.2, and NFC.

The device will also have up to 16GB of LPDDR5X RAM and 256GB of storage, according to the reports. The battery capacity of the OnePlus Open is said to be 4805mAh, which will support 100W fast charging. The device will run on Color OS 13.1 based on Android 13, which is the same software that powers Oppo phones.

The camera department of the OnePlus Open will consist of a 48MP main camera, a 48MP ultra-wide camera, and a 64MP telephoto camera with 3x optical zoom. The device will also have two selfie cameras: a 32MP one on the outer screen and a 20MP one on the main screen.

OnePlus Open price and launch date: A $1,699 phone launching on October 19

The OnePlus Open will reportedly cost $1,699 in the US market, which is only $100 less than the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5, which is currently the most popular foldable phone in the world. The price of the OnePlus Open in India is expected to be below Rs 1,20,000, which is still quite expensive for most consumers.

The device is said to be launching on October 19, which is just a few days after Qualcomm unveils its next-generation Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset. This means that the OnePlus Open will soon be outperformed by other flagship phones that will use the newer processor.

The OnePlus Open will be available in the US and Europe, but not in Germany due to a patent dispute between Oppo and Nokia. It is not clear if the device will launch in other markets like China or India.
