Samsung’s flagship smartphone series, the Galaxy S, has been known for its curved displays since the Galaxy S6 Edge in 2015. However, a new leak suggests that the upcoming Galaxy S24 Ultra may break this tradition and opt for a flat screen instead.
According to a leak by tipster OnLeaks, who shared unofficial renders of the Galaxy S24 Ultra and the Galaxy S24 Plus, the top-of-the-line model will no longer feature a curved display. Instead, it will have a 6.8-inch LTPO AMOLED panel with a slight curve on the glass edges.
The reason for this change is not clear, but some possible factors could be:
- Curved displays are more expensive and difficult to produce than flat ones.
- Curved displays are more prone to accidental touches and glare issues.
- Curved displays may not offer any significant advantage in terms of user experience or functionality.
Some users may prefer the flat screen design, as it offers a more comfortable grip and a simpler look. However, some fans of the curved display may be disappointed by this decision, as they may see it as a unique feature of Samsung’s flagships.
What Else to Expect from the Galaxy S24 Ultra
The leak also reveals some other details about the Galaxy S24 Ultra, such as:
- It will have a Snapdragon 8 Gen3 chipset, up to 16GB of RAM, up to 2TB of storage, and a 5,000mAh battery with 45W fast charging support.
- It will have a quad rear camera setup with a new ISOCELL HP25X 200MP primary sensor, a 50MP periscope lens with 5x optical zoom and a 10MP telephoto lens with 3x optical zoom.
- It will have a 12MP selfie camera, an in-display fingerprint scanner, an IP68 water and dust resistance rating, and an S-Pen integration.
- It will have a titanium frame, a UWB antenna, and a peak brightness of over 2,200 nits.
The Galaxy S24 Ultra is expected to be launched in early 2023, along with the Galaxy S24 and the Galaxy S24 Plus. The latter two models will have similar designs but smaller screens and lower specifications.
How the Galaxy S24 Ultra Compares to Its Rivals
The Galaxy S24 Ultra will face tough competition from other flagship smartphones in the market, such as:
- The iPhone 15 Pro Max, which is rumored to have a 6.7-inch OLED display with ProMotion technology, an A16 Bionic chip, up to 1TB of storage, and a triple rear camera setup with improved optical zoom and night mode.
- The Oppo Find X6 Pro, which currently holds the record for the brightest display with 2,500 nits of peak brightness. It also has a 6.7-inch OLED display with adaptive refresh rate, a Snapdragon 888+ chipset, up to 16GB of RAM, up to 512GB of storage, and a quad rear camera setup with a 50MP primary sensor and a periscope lens with 10x optical zoom.
- The Huawei P60 Pro Plus, which is expected to have a 6.9-inch OLED display with QHD+ resolution and 120Hz refresh rate, a Kirin 920 chipset, up to 16GB of RAM, up to 512GB of storage, and a penta rear camera setup with a 200MP primary sensor and a periscope lens with 20x optical zoom.
The Galaxy S24 Ultra will have to prove its worth by offering superior performance, camera quality, battery life, and user experience than its rivals. It will also have to justify its price tag, which is likely to be higher than $1,000.
