Honor Play 50 Plus: A Budget-Friendly 5G Smartphone with a Massive Battery

Honor, the former sub-brand of Huawei, has launched a new entry-level 5G smartphone in China, called the Honor Play 50 Plus. The device boasts a 6.8-inch 90Hz display, a 50MP dual camera setup, up to 12GB of RAM, up to 256GB of storage, and a huge 6,000mAh battery. The Honor Play 50 Plus is the successor of the Honor Play 40 Plus from last year.

A Large and Smooth Display

The Honor Play 50 Plus features a 6.8-inch IPS LCD panel with a punch-hole design. It offers a Full HD+ resolution of 1080 x 2400 pixels, a 90Hz refresh rate, a 20:9 aspect ratio, and up to 850 nits of brightness. The display supports HDR10 and DCI-P3 color gamut, and has a screen-to-body ratio of 90.5%. The device comes preinstalled with the Magic OS 7.2-based Android 13.

A Powerful Processor and Ample Memory

The Honor Play 50 Plus is powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 6020 chipset, which is an octa-core processor with four Cortex-A76 cores clocked at 2.4GHz and four Cortex-A55 cores clocked at 2GHz. The chipset also integrates a Mali-G57 MC3 GPU and a 5G modem that supports both SA and NSA networks. The device offers up to 12GB of LPDDR4X RAM and up to 256GB of UFS 2.1 storage. It also supports memory expansion via a microSD card slot.

A High-Resolution Camera and a Depth Sensor

The Honor Play 50 Plus sports a dual camera system on the back, consisting of a 50MP primary sensor with an f/1.8 aperture and phase detection autofocus, and a 2MP depth sensor with an f/2.4 aperture. The rear cameras support AI scene recognition, night mode, portrait mode, HDR, panorama, time-lapse, slow-motion, and video recording up to 4K at 30fps. On the front, there is an 8MP selfie camera with an f/2.0 aperture and fixed focus.

A Massive Battery and Fast Charging

The Honor Play 50 Plus packs a whopping 6,000mAh battery that supports 35W fast charging via a USB-C port. The device also supports reverse charging, which allows it to charge other devices using a USB-C to USB-C cable. According to Honor, the battery can provide up to 18 hours of video playback, up to 15 hours of gaming, or up to 10 hours of web browsing on a single charge.

Other Features and Availability

The Honor Play 50 Plus comes with other features such as dual speakers with Hi-Res audio support (wired and wireless), a side-mounted fingerprint scanner, face unlock, dual SIM, Wi-Fi 802.11ac, Bluetooth 5.1, GPS, NFC, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. The device measures 166.7 x 76.5 x 8.24mm and weighs 199 grams. It comes in four colors: Magic Night Black, Mo Yuqing (green), Star Purple, and Streaming Silver.

The Honor Play 50 Plus is priced at CNY1,399 (~$195) for the variant with 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. The price of the variant with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage is yet to be revealed. The device is currently available for purchase in China through Honor’s official website.
