Samsung C&T Launches Operations for Riyadh Metro, Pioneering Saudi Arabia’s Public Transit

Samsung C&T’s construction division has officially commenced operations for the Riyadh Metro, marking a monumental milestone in Saudi Arabia’s infrastructure development. As the first public transportation system in the kingdom, the Riyadh Metro spans six lines over 176 kilometers, positioning it among the world’s largest metro projects.

A Grand Opening Ceremony at the Riyadh Royal Palace

The grand opening of the Riyadh Metro took place on November 27 at the Riyadh Royal Palace, attended by members of the Saudi royal family and officials from the Riyadh Royal Commission (RCRC). King Salman bin Abdulaziz officially declared the metro open, symbolizing the project’s significance to Saudi Vision 2030. This visionary plan aims to diversify the Saudi economy and enhance the quality of life for its residents through extensive infrastructure and technological advancements.

Phased Launch of Metro Lines

Operations for lines 1, 4, and 6 began on December 1, with lines 2 and 5 set to start on December 15, and line 3 scheduled for January 5 of the following year. This phased approach ensures a smooth transition and allows for adjustments based on initial operational feedback.

Line 4, 5, and 6: Connecting Key Riyadh Landmarks

Samsung C&T, in collaboration with Spanish construction firm FCC, spearheaded the construction of lines 4, 5, and 6. These lines collectively extend 70 kilometers, include 29 stations, and feature 24 kilometers of viaducts. Key destinations connected by these lines include King Khalid International Airport and the King Abdullah Financial District, pivotal areas for both domestic and international travelers.

Advanced Construction Technologies Drive Success

Samsung C&T implemented cutting-edge construction technologies to ensure the successful completion of the Riyadh Metro. Notable among these are:

  • Full Span Launching Method (FSLM): This technique involves pre-fabricating bridge segments off-site for on-site installation, significantly speeding up the construction process and enhancing precision.
  • World Record Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM): The project achieved a world record by utilizing a TBM with a 9.8-meter diameter for the construction of line 5, enabling efficient and rapid tunneling through Riyadh’s challenging underground terrain.
  • Automated Driverless System: The entire metro system operates using an automated, driverless system, promising increased safety, reliability, and efficiency in daily operations.

Aligning with Saudi Vision 2030

The Riyadh Metro is a cornerstone of Saudi Vision 2030, aimed at transforming Riyadh into a modern, sustainable city with a robust public transportation network. The metro is expected to:

  • Stimulate the Regional Economy: By creating thousands of jobs and boosting local businesses, the metro contributes to economic diversification and growth.
  • Reduce Travel Time: Efficient transit options will significantly cut down commute times, enhancing productivity and quality of life for residents.
  • Enhance Quality of Life: With improved accessibility and reduced traffic congestion, the metro system is set to make Riyadh a more livable and environmentally friendly city.

Overcoming Challenges with Expertise and Innovation

Constructing one of the world’s largest metro systems presented numerous challenges, including logistical complexities, environmental considerations, and the need for seamless integration with existing infrastructure. Samsung C&T’s expertise and innovative approach were instrumental in overcoming these hurdles.

Collaborative Efforts with FCC

The partnership with FCC brought together international expertise and local knowledge, ensuring that the project met both global standards and regional requirements. This collaboration facilitated the efficient management of resources, timely completion of construction phases, and adherence to stringent safety protocols.

Future Expansion and Global Ambitions

Building on the success of the Riyadh Metro, Samsung C&T plans to expand its infrastructure and power plant ventures across various regions, including the Middle East, Southeast Asia, and Australia. The company aims to leverage the experience gained from the Riyadh Metro project to undertake more ambitious infrastructure projects worldwide.
