Strengthening Jordan’s Workforce with New Vocational Training Program
In a significant move to address the growing demand for skilled labor in Jordan’s contracting and construction sector, a new partnership has been formed between the Vocational Training Corporation (VTC) and MID Contracting Company. The two parties have signed a cooperation agreement aimed at qualifying and employing 700 Jordanians, contributing to the sector’s continued growth while creating sustainable job opportunities for local youth.
The signing ceremony, attended by Khaled Bakkar, the Chairman of VTC and Minister of Labour, and Alaa Masri, General Manager of MID Contracting, represents a crucial step toward bridging the skills gap in Jordan’s labor market. This agreement is not just about employment—it’s about equipping the future workforce with the technical skills needed to thrive in a rapidly evolving industry.
Meeting the Demands of a Growing Industry
Jordan’s contracting sector has long been a cornerstone of the nation’s economy, providing vital infrastructure and driving economic growth. However, as the industry expands, so does the need for a specialized workforce. According to Bakkar, this partnership is directly in response to the sector’s growing need for skilled labor. He emphasized that the sector is not only vital to the nation’s development but also critical to reducing unemployment among Jordanian youth.
“The empowerment of Jordanian youth to receive the required skills is a fundamental pillar of the Economic Modernisation Vision and a national priority,” Bakkar stated, highlighting the government’s focus on equipping young people with the tools they need to succeed.
This initiative is more than just a jobs program; it’s part of a broader strategy to modernize the economy and reduce unemployment. Bakkar underscored the importance of collaboration with the private sector to create a more sustainable labor market, which aligns with Jordan’s long-term economic goals.
Practical, Skills-Based Training for Future Workers
The training program, designed in collaboration with MID Contracting, will focus on both theoretical and practical learning. The first phase of the program will last six to eight weeks, where trainees will receive foundational knowledge in areas such as public safety, work site management, and other essential skills required in the contracting field.
Following the theoretical portion, participants will move on to hands-on training at the work sites of MID Contracting. This real-world experience will ensure that trainees are well-prepared to enter the workforce with the skills and confidence needed for success.
Ahmad Gharaibeh, Director General of the VTC, explained that this partnership is part of the corporation’s ongoing efforts to modernize its training programs and align them with industry needs. “This agreement represents a practical model of our commitment to connecting training directly with employment opportunities,” Gharaibeh said, adding that the VTC is continuously working to develop partnerships with leading companies across various sectors.
A Long-Term Investment in Human Capital
Alaa Masri, General Manager of MID Contracting, emphasized the company’s investment in Jordanian human capital through this initiative. “This partnership is a true investment in the national workforce,” Masri stated. By training Jordanian youth to high standards, the company aims to raise the quality of projects in the sector and boost the competitiveness of the construction industry both locally and regionally.
The agreement highlights a commitment to developing a workforce that can not only meet the current needs of the industry but also contribute to its future growth. The training will cover a wide range of skills, ensuring that graduates are equipped with the technical expertise required to meet the challenges of modern contracting and construction projects.
Expanding Training Facilities Across Jordan
To support this initiative, the VTC will provide equipped training centers in the governorates of Balqa and Zarqa, ensuring that the program is accessible to a wide range of Jordanians. The VTC will also deploy qualified trainers and provide logistical support to ensure the training is of the highest standard.
This collaboration is a significant step toward a more sustainable and competitive contracting sector in Jordan. By linking training directly to employment opportunities, it is hoped that this initiative will not only provide immediate job opportunities but also contribute to the long-term development of the country’s workforce.
