Motorola’s New Phone Concept Can Bend and Wrap Around Your Wrist

Motorola, a subsidiary of Lenovo, has unveiled a new concept for a smartphone that can bend and wrap around the user’s wrist like a bracelet. The device, which was showcased at the Lenovo Tech World 2023 event in Austin, Texas, features a flexible display and wrist-wrapping capabilities, as well as some innovative features powered by artificial intelligence.

The phone, which Motorola calls an “adaptive display concept”, has a 6.9-inch FHD+ pOLED plastic display that can be bent and shaped into different forms depending on the user’s needs. When laid flat, the phone runs the full Android experience, just like any other smartphone. When folded into an upright position, the phone can stand on its own and run a more compact version of Android on a 4.6-inch display. And when wrapped around the wrist, the phone transforms into a wearable device that can show notifications, time, and other information on its external display.

Motorola says that this adaptive display concept further extends the display and mechanical advancements found in its foldable and rollable devices across both smartphone and PC categories. The company claims that the phone is designed to offer maximum convenience and versatility to the users who are always on the go.

A Phone That Can Match Your Style

The phone also boasts some interesting features that are powered by artificial intelligence. One of them is a generative AI model that allows the users to customize their phone’s appearance according to their preferences and outfits. For example, the users can take a photo of their clothing and have their phone automatically adjust its background color and pattern to match their style. The phone can also generate unique wallpapers and themes based on the user’s mood, location, or occasion.

Another feature is a smart assistant that can help the users with various tasks and queries. The assistant can recognize the user’s voice and gestures, as well as provide contextual information and suggestions based on the user’s behavior and preferences. The assistant can also control other smart devices that are connected to the phone, such as lights, speakers, or cameras.

A Phone That Is Still a Prototype

The phone that Motorola revealed at the Lenovo Tech World 2023 event is still a prototype and not a final product. The company has not announced any plans to release it to the public or reveal its specifications, price, or availability. The phone is also not the first of its kind, as Motorola had previously demonstrated a similar concept at the Lenovo Tech World 2016 event, but it did not gain much attention or traction at the time.

The phone also faces some challenges and limitations that need to be overcome before it can become a viable product. For instance, the phone requires a metal band to be worn on the wrist to secure it in place, which may not be comfortable or convenient for some users. The phone also needs to ensure its durability and reliability when it comes to bending and folding repeatedly. Moreover, the phone needs to offer a compelling value proposition and user experience that can justify its novelty and innovation.
