Larian Studios, the developer behind the critically acclaimed Baldur’s Gate 3, has teased that they are working on a new game. In a video posted on IGN, the studio’s founder Swen Vincke revealed that they have a “big surprise” for their fans, but did not give any details about what it is.
Vincke said that the studio is “very busy” with Baldur’s Gate 3, which launched in August 2023 for PC and PS5, and is coming to Xbox later this year. He also said that they are still working on patches and updates for the game, as well as adding new content and features.
However, he also hinted that they have something else in the pipeline, saying that they have “a lot of ideas” and that they are “always thinking about the next thing”. He said that they are “not ready to talk about it yet”, but that they will “make a lot of noise” when they do.
What could the new game be?
Larian Studios is known for making role-playing games with deep stories, rich choices, and immersive gameplay. Their previous titles include the Divinity: Original Sin series, which was praised for its co-op mode, turn-based combat, and dynamic world.
Baldur’s Gate 3 is their most ambitious project yet, as it is based on the Dungeons & Dragons franchise and is a sequel to the classic Baldur’s Gate games from the late 1990s and early 2000s. The game features a vast and diverse world, a complex and branching narrative, and a multiplayer mode that allows up to four players to adventure together.
The game is also one of the first to use the Stadia platform, which allows players to stream the game from the cloud without needing a powerful PC or console. The game also integrates with Twitch, allowing viewers to vote on the choices that the streamer makes in the game.
Given the success and popularity of Baldur’s Gate 3, it is possible that the new game that Larian Studios is working on is a spin-off or a related title set in the same universe. Alternatively, it could be a completely new IP that explores a different genre or setting.
When will we know more?
Vincke did not give any timeframe for when the new game will be announced or released, but he did say that they are “very excited” about it and that they hope that their fans will be too. He also thanked the players for their support and feedback, saying that they are “the reason why we do this”.
He also said that they will continue to support Baldur’s Gate 3, which is still receiving regular updates and improvements. The latest patch, which was released in September, added a new epilogue scene for one of the characters, as well as a magic mirror that allows players to change their appearance in-game.
