How to use Google RCS Messages on your iPhone with Beeper App

Google’s Rich Communication Services (RCS) is a messaging protocol that offers enhanced features such as end-to-end encryption, read receipts, typing indicators, and emoji support. It is widely available on Android devices, but not on iPhones, as Apple prefers its own iMessage service. However, thanks to a third-party app called Beeper, iPhone users can now enjoy RCS messaging with their Android friends and family.

What is Beeper?

Beeper is an app that consolidates 15 chat platforms, including Google Messages with RCS, iMessage, WhatsApp, Slack, Messenger, Telegram, Instagram, and more. It allows you to access all your messages in one place, and switch between different networks seamlessly. Beeper also supports cross-platform notifications, search, and encryption.

How to get RCS support on iPhone with Beeper?

Beeper recently updated its official changelog page to show that the app now supports Google Messages + RCS. This makes Beeper the first RCS chat app for iPhone. However, the feature is still in beta, and there are some known issues and limitations. For example, you need an Android phone with an active mobile number to enable RCS on Beeper. You also need to sign up for a waitlist and wait for about 45 days before you can download the app.

Here are the steps to get RCS support on iPhone with Beeper:

  • Sign up for the waitlist by heading to the official website. Enter your name, email id, preferred chat network, country, and phone number.
  • Once the wait is over, you will receive the Beeper download link for the desktop app. Install the app and follow the on-screen instructions.
  • Select Google Messages as a chat network from the list. You will need to scan a QR code with your Android phone to link your Google account and phone number.
  • After all the setup, you can connect to Android contacts and start a chat using RCS features.

What are the benefits of RCS messaging?

RCS messaging offers several benefits over traditional SMS services. Some of them are:

  • You can send and receive high-quality photos and videos without any compression or quality loss.
  • You can see when someone is typing or has read your message.
  • You can use emoji and stickers to express yourself better.
  • You can create group chats and add or remove participants easily.
  • You can share your location or contact information with a tap.
  • You can chat over Wi-Fi or mobile data without any extra charges.

What are the drawbacks of RCS messaging?

RCS messaging is not without its drawbacks. Some of them are:

  • Not all carriers or devices support RCS messaging. You may need to check with your service provider or device manufacturer if they have enabled RCS on their network or device.
  • Not all messaging apps support RCS messaging. You may need to use Google Messages or Beeper to access RCS features.
  • RCS messaging is not fully secure or private. Although Google claims that it encrypts your messages in transit, it does not offer end-to-end encryption like WhatsApp or Signal. This means that Google or your carrier may be able to access your messages under certain circumstances.
