Godzilla Minus One: The King of Monsters Returns in New Toho Film

Toho Studios, the original creators of Godzilla, have released two new TV spots for their upcoming film Godzilla Minus One. The film is set to hit theaters on December 1, 2023, and will mark the first new Toho Godzilla film since 2016’s Shin Godzilla. The TV spots are short, but they tease more of Godzilla’s arrival in the city and the destruction he causes. In one of the spots, Godzilla can be seen transforming a bit, with a glowing blue spike popping out of his tail in the heat of action.

Godzilla Minus One is written and directed by Takashi Yamazaki, who is known for his work on the live-action adaptations of Parasyte and Lupin III. The film features music by Naoki Sato, who has composed scores for films such as Rurouni Kenshin and Kingdom. The cast includes Ryunosuke Kamiki, Minami Hamabe, Yuki Yamada, Munetaka Aoki, Hidetaka Yoshioka, Sakura Ando, and Kuranosuke Sasaki.

Godzilla Minus One depicts a postwar Japan facing a new threat

The film’s story is set in a postwar Japan that has been devastated by World War II. Japan faces a new threat in the form of Godzilla, who emerges from the sea and wreaks havoc on the nation. The film’s title refers to the fact that Godzilla brings Japan from nothing (zero) into the negative (minus one). The film will explore how Japan deals with this unprecedented crisis and how it affects its people, politics, and culture.

According to Yamazaki, the film will be a realistic and grounded depiction of Godzilla, similar to Shin Godzilla. He said that he wanted to show how Godzilla would affect the modern world and how humans would react to him. He also said that he wanted to pay homage to the original 1954 Godzilla film, which was also a reflection of Japan’s postwar situation.
