DZOFILM Launches Pavo 2X Anamorphic Lenses for Super 35mm Cameras

DZOFILM, a Chinese manufacturer of cinema lenses, has recently announced the launch of its new Pavo 2X Anamorphic lenses for Super 35mm sensors. The Pavo series consists of six lenses with focal lengths ranging from 28mm to 100mm and a constant aperture of T2.1 (except for the 100mm which is T2.4). The lenses feature a 2X squeeze factor, blue or neutral coating options, interchangeable PL/EF mount, and back-focus adjustment. The lenses are priced at $5,500 USD each and are available for pre-order now.

What are Anamorphic Lenses?

Anamorphic lenses are a type of lens that compresses the image horizontally by a certain factor, usually 2X or 1.33X, to create a wider aspect ratio and a more cinematic look. When the image is projected or displayed on a screen, it is stretched back to its original shape, resulting in a wider field of view and distinctive optical characteristics such as oval bokeh, horizontal flares, and barrel distortion.

Anamorphic lenses are often used in filmmaking to create a more immersive and dramatic visual experience for the audience. Some of the most iconic films that used anamorphic lenses are Blade Runner, Star Wars, The Lord of the Rings, and Mad Max: Fury Road.

Why Choose Pavo 2X Anamorphic Lenses?

The Pavo 2X Anamorphic lenses are designed for Super 35mm sensors, which are widely used in many cinema cameras such as ARRI ALEXA, RED KOMODO, Canon C300 Mark III, and Blackmagic URSA Mini Pro. The lenses offer a 2X compression ratio, which means they can produce a 2.39:1 aspect ratio when used with a 4:3 sensor or a 3.55:1 aspect ratio when used with a 16:9 sensor.

The Pavo lenses also have two different coating options: blue and neutral. The blue coating creates more pronounced horizontal flares and cooler colors, while the neutral coating produces more subtle flares and warmer colors. The coating can be changed by the user according to their preference and creative vision.

Another feature of the Pavo lenses is the interchangeable PL/EF mount, which allows the user to switch between different camera systems easily. The lenses also have a built-in back-focus adjustment mechanism, which enables precise calibration and compatibility with different cameras or mounts.

The Pavo lenses are compact and lightweight, weighing between 1.2kg to 1.6kg and having a front diameter of only 95mm. This makes them suitable for handheld, drone, or Steadicam shooting. The lenses also have short minimum focus distances across all focal lengths, ranging from 0.8m to 1.5m, which allows for more creative framing and close-up shots.

How to Pre-Order Pavo 2X Anamorphic Lenses?

The Pavo 2X Anamorphic lenses are currently available for pre-order on the official DZOFILM website or through authorized dealers. The lenses are expected to start shipping in October 2023. The price for each lens is $5,500 USD, which is relatively affordable compared to other anamorphic lenses on the market.

The Pavo series includes six focal lengths: 28mm T2.1, 32mm T2.1, 40mm T2.1, 55mm T2.1, 75mm T2.1, and 100mm T2.4. The user can choose between blue or neutral coating for each lens. The lenses come with a hard case, front and rear caps, lens support foot, and PL/EF mount adapter.

DZOFILM has also released some sample footage shot with the Pavo lenses on various cameras. The footage showcases the anamorphic look and feel of the lenses in different lighting conditions and scenarios.
