AMD has announced its new mid-range graphics cards, the Radeon RX 7800 XT and RX 7700 XT, at Gamescom 2023. The new cards are based on the RDNA3 architecture and are designed to deliver high-performance and visually stunning 1440p gaming experiences.
RDNA3 architecture and features
The Radeon RX 7800 XT and RX 7700 XT are based on the same RDNA3 architecture as the other Radeon RX 7000 series graphics cards. The RDNA3 architecture features redesigned compute units with unified raytracing and AI accelerators, second-generation AMD Infinity Cache technology and second-generation raytracing technology.
The RDNA3 architecture also supports advanced features that enhance performance and visual fidelity, such as:
- AMD HYPR-RX technology, which enables faster data transfer between the GPU and the CPU, reducing latency and improving responsiveness.
- AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution 3, which is the next generation of the popular upscaling technology that is designed to offer massive performance boosts in supported games. FSR3 includes frame generation technology, which AMD calls Fluid Motion Frames and can nearly double your frame rate. This, combined with super resolution upscaling, can provide near tripling of frame rates in titles such as Forspoken.
- AMD Anti-Lag+, which is a driver based feature to reduce latency. Anti-Lag+ works by synchronizing the CPU and GPU workloads, minimizing the time between input and output.
Radeon RX 7800 XT and RX 7700 XT specifications and performance
The Radeon RX 7800 XT and RX 7700 XT are both based on a new Navi 32 GPU, which uses a chiplet design similar to the Navi 31 on the RX 7900 XT and 7900 XTX but different to the monolithic design of the Navi 33 on the RX 7600.
The Radeon RX 7800 XT features 60 compute units and ray accelerators, which is a 29% reduction compared to the RX 7900 XT. The ROPs (render output units) see a much more significant 50% drop to 96. Game clock has seen an increase from 2000MHz to 2124MHz. Memory also sees some reductions, with the 20GB 20Gbps GDDR6 on the RX 7900 XT reduced to 16GB 19.5Gbps on the RX 7800 XT. Memory bus sees a reduction from 320-bit to 256-bit, with bandwidth dropping from 800GB/s to 624GB/s. The Infinity Cache capacity also drops from 80MB to 64MB. The RX 7800 XT has a typical board power of 263W.
The Radeon RX 7700 XT is a surprisingly small step down from the RX 7800 XT, at least as far as the GPU is concerned. It packs 54 compute units and ray accelerators and the same 96 ROPs. Game clock is a slightly higher 2171MHz. The RX 7700 XT has 12GB of GDDR6 memory with 18Gbps memory speed, 192-bit bus, and 432GB/s bandwidth. Infinity cache is 48MB. Considering the specs, the 245W board power is also not too far off the RX 7800 XT’s.
The Radeon RX 7800 XT and RX 7700 XT graphics cards also offer 16GB and 12GB of high-speed GDDR6 VRAM, respectively, and up to 50% higher memory bandwidth than the competition for high-resolution gaming. They also support advanced features that take performance and visual fidelity to the next level, such as HDMI 2.1 48Gbps and DisplayPort 2.1 54Gbps connectors with support for AV1 decoding and encoding.
The Radeon RX 7800 XT is priced at $499 and will compete against the $599 Nvidia GeForce RTX 4070. AMD claims the RX 7800 XT is on average 4% faster at 1440p than the RTX 4070. The RX 7800 XT also has 33% more memory than the RTX 4070 with a wider memory bus but the RTX 4070 is also a 186W graphics card, making it significantly more efficient than the RX 7800 XT.
The Radeon RX 7700 XT is only $50 cheaper at $449 and will only be available from board partners. It will compete against the RTX 4060 Ti 16GB, which is priced at $499. AMD claims a far more substantial 12% performance advantage over the Nvidia card for the RX 7700 XT but since it’s only $50 cheaper you may as well get the RX 7800 XT.
Availability and reviews
The Radeon RX 7800 XT and RX 7700 XT graphics cards will be available from leading board partners including ASRock, ASUS, Biostar, Gigabyte, PowerColor, Sapphire, Vastarmor, XFX and Yeston beginning September 6, 2023. The Radeon RX 7800 XT graphics cards will also be available from AMD.com beginning September 6, 2023.
