The Volkswagen Group, one of the world’s largest automakers, has announced that it delivered 35 percent more all-electric vehicles to customers in 2023 than in the previous year. This impressive growth reflects the company’s commitment to the transformation of the automotive industry and the transition to a sustainable, clean-energy future.
The Volkswagen Group’s strong performance in the electric vehicle (EV) segment was especially evident in Europe, where it delivered 472,400 EVs in 2023, an increase of 34.2 percent compared to the previous year. The EV share of total deliveries in Europe rose to 12.5 percent, up from 11.2 percent in 2022. This made the Volkswagen Group the market leader in the electric car segment and helped it gain market share in Europe as a whole.
The growth in Europe was driven by the popularity of the Group’s brands and models, such as the Volkswagen ID.3, ID.4, and ID.5, the Audi e-tron and e-tron GT, the Skoda Enyaq, and the Porsche Taycan. The Group also benefited from the favorable regulatory environment and the increasing consumer demand for EVs in Europe.
Volkswagen Group Expands its EV Presence in North America and South America
The Volkswagen Group also significantly increased its deliveries of EVs in North America and South America, two regions that have traditionally lagged behind Europe in terms of EV adoption. In North America, the Group delivered 71,000 EVs in 2023, up 60.8 percent compared to the previous year. EVs accounted for 10 percent of Group deliveries in the US and Canada, up from 7 percent in 2022.
The Group’s success in North America was largely attributed to the launch of the Tesla Model Y, which became the best-selling EV in the region with 5,035 registrations in September 2023. The Model Y is a crossover SUV that offers a long range, a spacious interior, and a high-performance driving experience. The Model Y also competes with the Volkswagen ID.4, which delivered 14 units in September 2023.
In South America, the Volkswagen Group sold a total of 518,200 cars in 2023, of which 9,400 were EVs. This represents a 9.4 percent increase in total deliveries and a 12.8 percent increase in EV deliveries compared to the previous year. The Group’s growth in South America was mainly driven by the strong performance of the Volkswagen brand in Brazil, where it delivered 398,300 vehicles, including 7,800 EVs.
Volkswagen Group Continues to Drive Forward the E-Offensive with New Products and Technologies
The Volkswagen Group is not resting on its laurels, but rather continues to drive forward the e-offensive with new products and technologies. The Group plans to launch more than 70 new EV models by 2030, with the aim of achieving a 50 percent share of EVs in its global deliveries. The Group also intends to invest more than 150 billion euros in future technologies, such as battery development, charging infrastructure, software, and autonomous driving.
The Volkswagen Group’s CEO, Oliver Blume, expressed his satisfaction with the market success of the Group’s brands and models and his optimism for the future. He said, “We are pleased with the market success of our strong brands and models. It is positive that all major brands and all regions are growing. We are resolutely driving forward the transformation. In 2023, we delivered 35 percent more all-electric vehicles to customers. We are also well positioned this year with numerous attractive new products despite ongoing challenges.”
