Samsung Galaxy A55 to feature Exynos 1480 with AMD graphics

The Samsung Galaxy A55 is expected to be the next mid-range smartphone from the Korean giant, and it may come with a powerful chipset that has not been officially announced yet. The Exynos 1480, which is rumored to be the successor of the Exynos 1380, has been spotted on Geekbench, revealing some of its key specifications and performance.

According to the Geekbench listing, the Exynos 1480 (S5E8845) is an octa-core processor with four high-performance cores clocked at up to 2.75GHz and four efficiency cores running at up to 2.05GHz. The chipset is based on the ARMv8 architecture and scored 1,180 points in the single-core test and 3,536 points in the multi-core test. These scores are notably higher than the Exynos 1380, which powers the Galaxy A54 and scored 1,108 and 2,797 points, respectively.

The most interesting aspect of the Exynos 1480, however, is the GPU. The chipset is said to feature the Xclipse 530 GPU, which uses the AMD RDNA 2 graphics technology. This is the same technology that is used in the flagship Exynos 2200, which debuted in the Galaxy S23 series in Europe. The Xclipse 530 GPU should offer a significant boost in graphics performance compared to the Mali GPUs in previous Exynos chips, and it could even support ray tracing in games, though this is still speculative.

Samsung Galaxy A55: A mid-range gaming powerhouse?

The Exynos 1480 is rumored to power the upcoming Galaxy A55, which could be a mid-range gaming powerhouse with its AMD graphics. The Galaxy A55 is also expected to have a 6.5-inch FullHD+ OLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate, a 50MP main camera, and 25W fast charging. The design of the phone has been leaked in renders, showing a familiar look with some refinements, such as flat sides on the metal frame.

The Galaxy A55 is likely to be launched in early 2024, along with other Galaxy A-series phones that may also use the Exynos 1480 chipset. Samsung has not confirmed the existence of the Exynos 1480 or the Galaxy A55 yet, but the Geekbench listing suggests that they are already in the testing phase and could be announced soon.
