Helixx reveals new EV manufacturing system with demo vehicle

Helixx, a UK-based global technology company, has unveiled a demonstration vehicle that showcases its innovative and low-cost electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing system. The company claims that its system can enable local businesses to produce EVs in as little as 180 days from an empty building.

Helixx’s vision is to create a network of mobility hubs that can produce and operate EVs for various use cases, such as delivery, construction, and ride-hailing. The company provides the materials, designs, processes, and expertise as a white-label license to its customers, who then assemble the actual vehicles using software-led production and site designs that are customised to local needs.

The company says that its system can reduce the complexity and cost of EV production, as well as the environmental impact of transportation. The system also allows for flexibility and scalability, as customers can choose from different vehicle types and sizes, and integrate their own branding and design elements.

The demonstration vehicle

The demonstration vehicle is a preview of the Helixx commercial delivery van, which is set to enter production in 2024. The van features a hybrid aluminium chassis, a central driving position, and a cube-like body that maximises interior load space. The van has a 2,100-litre capacity and a 500-kg maximum payload, which can accommodate the bulk of global shipping pallets.

The body system of the van consists of only five key structural components, which “click and bond” together for easy assembly. The company says that this reduces manufacturing costs and results in a robust and durable vehicle. The body system also follows a specific set of rules that enable replication in Helixx mobility hubs, while allowing for customer-specific modifications.

The demonstration vehicle was built using in-house 3D printing to create all of the structural and cosmetic body parts from scratch. All of the components were captured digitally, which enables rapid prototyping and testing.

The market potential

Helixx aims to target developing regions with its system, where the demand for EVs is growing but the supply is limited by infrastructure and cost barriers. The company believes that its system can empower local entrepreneurs and communities to create their own mobility solutions that are affordable, sustainable, and adaptable.

Steve Pegg, Helixx CEO and co-founder, said that the demonstration vehicle was a proof of concept that validated the global replicability of the company’s digital-first approach. He said that the vehicle transformed Helixx from a great idea into a tangible and accessible proposition.

The company plans to launch four vehicle models in 2024: the delivery van, a pick-up truck for the construction industry, an open-body passenger vehicle, and a closed-body passenger vehicle for ride-hailing fleets. The company says that it will offer subscribers access to these vehicles from USD 0.25 per hour.
