At a recent Egypt-EU investment conference, officials highlighted Egypt’s potential in wind and solar energy, along with green hydrogen. Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly emphasized the industry’s significance for both sides, suggesting that Egypt should manufacture renewable components like solar panels, wind turbines, and electrolysers.
Grid Challenges and Financing
Despite its ambitions, Egypt faces challenges in modernizing its grid infrastructure. Unlocking investments for new projects remains a priority. The country has signed several Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) for renewable energy and green hydrogen development since hosting the COP 27 climate summit in 2022. Egypt’s goal is to export electricity to regional neighbors, but achieving this requires substantial investment and grid enhancements.
A Vision for the Future
Electricity Minister Mohamed Shaker revealed that Egypt is reviewing its clean energy targets. By 2040, the country aims for renewables to account for 58% of its power generation. This ambitious vision aligns with global efforts to diversify energy sources and reduce carbon emissions.
