Viking Unveils Newest Ship for Egypt’s Nile River Cruises

Viking has just launched its latest venture into the heart of Egypt with the Viking Amun, a new ship set to sail along the iconic Nile River starting in September. The 82-guest vessel marks an exciting milestone for the cruise line, offering a luxurious and immersive way to experience Egypt’s rich history.

A New Era for Nile River Cruises

On April 21, 2025, Viking celebrated a major step in its Egypt expansion with the float-out of the Viking Amun at the Massara shipyard in Cairo. This significant event signals the ship’s move to the final stage of construction, where it will undergo outfitting and interior work before its debut later this year. Viking, renowned for its world-class river and ocean cruises, has crafted the Viking Amun with the same high standards that define its fleet, blending modern luxury with the timeless allure of Egypt’s ancient wonders.

“We believe Egypt is one of the world’s most captivating destinations, and we’re eager to share its magnificence with even more travelers in the years ahead,” said Viking Chairman and CEO Torstein Hagen during the float-out ceremony. The Viking Amun will join an expanding fleet of Viking ships that have brought a new level of comfort and style to Nile River cruising.

Viking Amun: A Ship Designed for Adventure and Comfort

The Viking Amun, which will accommodate 82 guests in 41 staterooms, is designed with the signature Scandinavian elegance Viking is known for. Its distinctive square bow and indoor/outdoor Aquavit Terrace—one of Viking’s signature features—offer stunning views of the Nile and surrounding landscapes. These elements reflect the ship’s commitment to providing travelers with a premium experience, blending modernity with the region’s ancient charm.

The Viking Amun is identical to its sister ships, including the Viking Osiris, Viking Aton, Viking Sobek, and Viking Hathor. Together, these vessels will make up a fleet that continues to grow, with Viking planning to add five more ships to its Egypt fleet in the next two years. By 2027, Viking will have a total of 12 ships on the Nile River, further solidifying its commitment to this culturally rich region.

The Pharaohs & Pyramids Itinerary

The Viking Amun will host passengers on Viking’s popular 12-day “Pharaohs & Pyramids” itinerary, one of the most comprehensive journeys through Egypt’s ancient sites. Guests will begin their adventure with a three-night stay at a first-class hotel in Cairo, where they will have the chance to explore some of Egypt’s most iconic landmarks. These include the Great Pyramids of Giza, the Sakkara necropolis, the Mosque of Muhammad Ali, and the Grand Egyptian Museum, home to countless artifacts from Egypt’s ancient past.

After soaking in the historical splendor of Cairo, travelers will fly to Luxor, where they’ll visit the awe-inspiring Temples of Luxor and Karnak. Following their time in Luxor, they will board the Viking Amun for an eight-day roundtrip cruise on the Nile River. The itinerary includes unforgettable excursions to the tomb of Nefertari in the Valley of the Queens and Tutankhamen’s tomb in the Valley of the Kings. Guests will also have the opportunity to visit the Temple of Khnum in Esna, the Dendera Temple complex in Qena, and the majestic Abu Simbel temples in Aswan, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

A standout feature of this journey is a visit to a colorful Nubian village, where passengers can immerse themselves in local culture, interacting with the community and even visiting a traditional elementary school. The itinerary concludes with a final night in Cairo, where travelers can reflect on the rich experiences they’ve had while exploring this extraordinary region.

Expanding Viking’s Nile Fleet

The Viking Amun is just one part of Viking’s broader strategy to enhance its presence in Egypt. With the addition of five new ships by 2027, the company aims to offer even more luxury options for travelers looking to explore the mysteries of Egypt in style. The company’s growing fleet reflects the increasing demand for Nile River cruises, as tourists seek to immerse themselves in the region’s fascinating history while enjoying the comfort and service Viking is known for.

By combining intimate exploration with world-class service, Viking’s fleet is set to redefine what it means to cruise along the Nile. With a focus on luxurious accommodations, expert guides, and an all-inclusive experience, Viking aims to bring Egypt’s ancient past to life for travelers in a way that’s both enriching and relaxing.
