The University of Sydney has achieved a remarkable feat in the latest Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2024, placing 60th in the world and third in Australia and New Zealand. The prestigious ranking evaluates more than 1,900 universities from 108 countries and regions across five pillars: teaching, research quality, research environment, international outlook and industry.
A strong performance in research quality and industry
The University of Sydney’s highest ranked pillar was research environment, which measures the quality and quantity of research outputs, as well as the reputation and income of the institution. The University moved up from 62nd to 54th internationally in this pillar, scoring especially highly on research quality, which is assessed by research strength, excellence and impact, and by citation impact.
The University also achieved a high score for its industry pillar, which reflects the relevance of its research to new patents and the income generated from industry collaborations. The University’s score in this pillar jumped from 73.2 to 97.7, indicating a strong alignment between its research and the needs of the society and economy.
A leader in sustainability and arts and humanities
The University of Sydney has also demonstrated its excellence in various disciplines, ranking among the world’s top 50 universities for more than 30 subjects. In particular, the University is ranked first in Australia and seventh in the world for sustainability, according to the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2024. This reflects the University’s commitment to addressing the global challenges of climate change, social justice and environmental degradation.
The University is also ranked first in Australia and 12th in the world for arts and humanities, according to the US News & World Report Rankings 2023. This showcases the University’s strength in disciplines such as classics and ancient history, English language and literature, modern languages, philosophy and sociology.
A consistent performer in other global rankings
The University of Sydney has maintained its position as one of the world’s leading universities in other reputable rankings as well. The University is ranked equal 19th globally in the QS World University Rankings 2024, jumping 22 places from last year. The University is also ranked 54th in the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) 2022 and 28th in the US News & World Report Rankings 2023.
The University’s Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Professor Stephen Garton, said he was proud of the University’s achievements and thanked the staff and students for their contributions.
“These rankings are a testament to our dedication to excellence in teaching and research, as well as our engagement with industry and community partners. They also reflect our vision to create a better future for everyone through education and innovation,” he said.
