Saudi Arabia Climbs 15 Places to 22nd in 2026 World Happiness Report

Saudi Arabia has jumped 15 places to rank 22nd in the 2026 World Happiness Report. With a strong life evaluation score of 6.817 out of 10, the Kingdom now stands ahead of the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom. This rise highlights how ongoing reforms are delivering better daily experiences for residents across the country.

The annual report, based on Gallup World Poll data from 2023 to 2025 and analyzed by the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network, surveyed people in 147 countries. Citizens rate their own lives on a scale of zero to 10. Saudi Arabia’s progress reflects real gains in living standards and a growing sense of optimism among its people.

Saudi Arabia Outshines Major Western Economies

Saudi Arabia now ranks higher than the US at 23rd, Canada at 25th, and the UK at 29th. This marks one of the most notable improvements in the report. The UAE sits just ahead at 21st with an almost identical score.

Finland once again leads the world with 7.764, followed closely by Iceland, Denmark, and Costa Rica. Nordic countries continue to dominate the top spots thanks to strong social support systems and high trust levels. Yet Saudi Arabia’s steady climb shows that rapid development in the Middle East can produce impressive results too.

Many observers point to the Kingdom’s ability to maintain economic stability while expanding social opportunities. Unlike some Western nations facing political divisions or economic pressures, Saudi Arabia has focused on practical improvements that touch everyday life.

How the World Happiness Report Calculates Rankings

The report looks at six main factors that explain differences in life satisfaction. These include GDP per capita, social support, healthy life expectancy, freedom to make life choices, generosity, and perceptions of corruption.

Saudi Arabia has shown gains across several of these areas. Strong economic growth from diversification efforts supports higher incomes. Expanded public spaces and community programs boost social connections. Health initiatives have pushed life expectancy higher, now approaching 79 years.

People feel they have more say in their futures. New entertainment options and job opportunities give families reasons to feel positive. Lower perceived corruption in daily services also plays a role in building trust.

Here are the six key factors measured in the report:

  • GDP per capita and economic opportunity
  • Strength of social support networks
  • Healthy life expectancy
  • Freedom to make personal life choices
  • Levels of generosity in society
  • Perceptions of corruption in government and business

These elements combine to create the overall score. Small improvements in multiple areas can lead to significant ranking jumps over time.

Vision 2030 Reshapes Life for Saudi Residents

The Quality of Life Program under Vision 2030 drives much of this progress. Launched in 2018, it focuses on culture, entertainment, sports, and tourism to create more fulfilling lives.

Results are visible everywhere. International tourist visits reached 115.9 million in 2024, up sharply from 41 million in 2018. New parks, events, and public spaces give families more places to gather. In 2024 alone, authorities planted over a million trees and opened 149 new parks.

Residents notice the difference in their daily routines. Ahmed Al-Dossari, a police officer in Dammam, described how life has changed. “There are more parks, events and things for families to do. People feel more comfortable going out and spending time together.”

Sara Al-Tamimi, an English teacher in Riyadh, sees the impact on young people. “There are many more opportunities now for families and young people to enjoy their time. Students talk about concerts, festivals and new places opening in the city. It creates a positive atmosphere.”

Major events like the Formula 1 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, Esports World Cup, and Riyadh Season attract millions. These experiences build national pride and create jobs in hospitality and services. Women’s participation in the workforce has also risen significantly, opening new paths for personal and family advancement.

Concrete Gains in Infrastructure and Opportunities

The changes go beyond big events. Public spaces have expanded to 6.53 square meters per person. Entertainment options have multiplied with new cinemas, festivals, and cultural venues. Sports participation is rising as the Kingdom invests in facilities and programs.

Unemployment has fallen notably since Vision 2030 began. Economic diversification creates jobs in tourism, entertainment, and technology. Young Saudis especially benefit from these shifts as they plan their futures.

Studies tracking subjective well-being show gradual improvements since the reforms started. Life evaluations have risen, and people report more positive daily emotions. The combination of better infrastructure, more leisure choices, and stronger community ties creates a foundation for lasting happiness.

Saudi Arabia is not alone in the Gulf. The UAE also performs strongly. Together, these nations demonstrate how focused national strategies can deliver measurable improvements in citizen satisfaction.

Looking Ahead to Even Brighter Days

This ranking represents more than a number on a list. It shows that millions of people feel their lives are improving in meaningful ways. Families have more time together. Young people see exciting opportunities at home. Residents take pride in their cities and their country’s direction.

The Kingdom still has work to do. Vision 2030 targets continue through the end of the decade with plans for more cultural events, better urban living, and expanded tourism. Upcoming milestones like Expo 2030 in Riyadh and the 2034 FIFA World Cup will bring even more global attention and investment.

Saudi Arabia’s rise in the World Happiness Report offers hope that deliberate policies focused on people can create real change. In a world where many countries struggle with declining satisfaction levels, the Kingdom’s story stands out as one of progress and possibility.
