Panasonic S5 II and S5 IIx: The New Full-Frame Mirrorless Cameras with PDAF

Panasonic has unveiled its latest full-frame mirrorless cameras, the LUMIX S5 II and S5 IIx, at the Consumer Electronics Show 2023. These are the first LUMIX cameras to feature Phase Detection Auto-Focus (PDAF), a technology that promises faster and more reliable focusing performance for both photo and video shooting.

What is PDAF and why is it important?

PDAF is a type of autofocus system that uses dedicated pixels on the sensor to measure the phase difference between two images of the same subject. By comparing the phase difference, the camera can determine whether the subject is in focus or not, and adjust the lens accordingly. This method is faster and more accurate than contrast detection autofocus (CDAF), which relies on finding the point of maximum contrast in the image.

CDAF has been the main autofocus system used by Panasonic in its LUMIX cameras for years. While it works well for still photography, it has some limitations for video recording. CDAF tends to hunt for focus, causing unwanted pulsing or wobbling effects in the background. It also struggles in low-light or fast-moving situations, where contrast is low or changing rapidly.

PDAF solves these problems by providing continuous and smooth autofocus tracking for video recording. It also works better in low-light and high-speed scenarios, where CDAF may fail or slow down. PDAF is widely used by other camera manufacturers such as Canon, Sony, and Nikon, and has become a standard feature for professional video production.

What are the other features of the S5 II and S5 IIx?

The S5 II and S5 IIx are not just about PDAF. They also offer many other features that make them attractive options for hybrid shooters who want to capture both stills and videos with high quality. Some of these features are:

  • A new 24.2-megapixel 35mm full-frame CMOS sensor that delivers high-resolution images with rich colors and details.
  • A new imaging engine that supports 6K 10-bit 4:2:0 or 4K 10-bit 4:2:2 video recording options with various frame rates and formats.
  • A new heat dispersion method with a built-in fan and heat sink that enables non-stop 4K recording without overheating.
  • A claimed dynamic range of 14+ stops with V-Log/V-Gamut and support for real-time LUTs for in-camera color grading by uploading your own LUTs to the camera directly.
  • A new image stabilization system that combines 5-axis Body IS and 2-axis lens-based OIS for photos and videos. Video also gets an Active IS mode that optimizes the correction ratios by determining the status of camera shake.
  • A dual native ISO system that allows switching between two ISO settings for optimal noise performance in different lighting conditions.
  • A 9fps AFS/7fps AFC burst mode with mechanical shutter and 30fps AFS/AFC with electronic shutter for capturing fast action.
  • A 48kHz/24-bit internal microphone recording and 96kHz/24-bit with external microphone for high-quality audio capture.
  • A full-sized HDMI port that supports 4K/60p output with HDR.
  • A 3680K dot OLED viewfinder and a 3.0-inch fully articulating 1840K dot touchscreen for comfortable framing and monitoring.
  • A USB-C port that supports charging, data transfer, tethering, and streaming.
  • A splash and dust-resistant magnesium alloy diecast body that is durable and lightweight.
  • A dual-band Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity for wireless control and sharing.

The main difference between the S5 II and S5 IIx is that the latter offers some additional features for advanced video production. These include:

  • RAW video output over HDMI to compatible external recorders such as Atomos Ninja V+ or Blackmagic Video Assist 12G HDR.
  • All-intra and ProRes recording on SSD via USB-C port for higher bitrates and quality.
  • Wired and wireless streaming options for live broadcasting via RTMP/RTMPS protocols or LUMIX Sync app.
  • USB tethering option for remote control and preview via LUMIX Tether for Multicam software.

When and how much are the S5 II and S5 IIx?

The Panasonic LUMIX S5 II is priced at $2000 and will be available this month. The LUMIX S5 IIx is priced at $2200 and will be available in May 2023. Both cameras are compatible with the L-Mount system, which offers a wide range of lenses from Panasonic, Leica, and Sigma.

The S5 II and S5 IIx are the latest additions to Panasonic’s full-frame mirrorless lineup, which also includes the S1, S1R, S1H, and S5. These cameras are designed to meet the diverse needs of photographers and videographers who want to capture high-quality images and videos with a compact and versatile system.
