Omoda, a new automotive brand from China, has announced its launch in the UK with a family SUV that runs on electricity. The Omoda E5 is a stylish and spacious crossover that offers a range of 280 miles and a fast charging capability. The brand aims to appeal to a younger generation of drivers who care about sustainability and innovation.
The Omoda E5 is the electric version of the Omoda 5, which was unveiled at the Qatar motor show in October 2023. The Omoda E5 features a 61kWh battery that powers a 204bhp front-mounted electric motor. The SUV can accelerate from 0 to 62mph in 7.6 seconds, matching the performance of the Lexus UX 300e. The Omoda E5 also boasts a high-speed charging capacity of 110kW, which means it can recharge from 0 to 80% in just 30 minutes.
The Omoda E5 has a sleek and aerodynamic design, with a distinctive front grille, a rear spoiler and modified side wings. The SUV also comes with a sunroof, 18-inch alloy wheels and adaptive ambient lighting. The interior is spacious and comfortable, with a leather steering wheel, dual-zone climate control and two wireless phone chargers. The Omoda E5 also features two 10.25-inch display screens, one for the infotainment system and one for the digital instrument cluster. The SUV supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, as well as Omoda’s own smart voice assistant.
Omoda: A new brand with a global vision
Omoda is a new brand from Chery Automobiles, China’s most prolific automotive export company. Chery has sold more than 450,000 vehicles across Asia, Australia, Africa, Latin America and the Middle East in 2023. Omoda is Chery’s fashion-focused and EV-biased brand, which aims to expand its global presence and reach new markets. Omoda has already launched in 15 countries across Eastern Europe, Central and South America, and Southeast Asia, achieving cumulative global export sales of more than 147,000 vehicles.
Omoda’s vision is to create a connection with its UK user base, by offering them stylish, smart and sustainable vehicles. The brand’s ambition is to support a younger generation of drivers in embracing the concepts of new Lifestyles of Health and Sustainability (LOHAS). Omoda believes that electric vehicles are not only a means of transportation, but also a way of expressing one’s personality and values. Omoda also cares about the environment, and has signed a strategic memorandum of understanding with the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). This partnership aims to synergise resources and contribute significantly to global green and sustainable development.
Omoda E5: Pricing and availability
The Omoda E5 is expected to go on sale in the UK in March 2024, along with the petrol-powered Omoda 5. The Omoda 5 will start from £24,000, making it one of the cheapest cars in its segment. The Omoda E5, however, will cost significantly more, at around £45,000. This price tag will put it in direct competition with other electric SUVs, such as the Toyota bZ4X and the Nissan Ariya.
Omoda has already secured over 50 retail sites across the UK, through a network of retail franchise partners, including Listers, Arnold Clark and Greenhous. These sites will provide sales and service for Omoda customers, from Cornwall to Scotland. Omoda’s Network Development Manager for the UK, Cullum Goodson, said: “We’ve been really encouraged by how enthusiastic retailers have been to work with us. We knew from the outset having a physical retail presence would be a key part of our approach in the UK, and with over 50 sites already confirmed pre-launch we’re exactly where we want to be.”
