Israel records highest number of road fatalities in November 2023

Israel witnessed a surge in road accidents and deaths in November 2023, with 29 fatalities and 1,372 injuries reported across the country. This is the highest monthly toll since January 2020, when 30 people were killed in traffic incidents. The main causes of the accidents were speeding, distracted driving, and alcohol consumption.

According to the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA), speeding was the most common factor in fatal crashes, accounting for 40 percent of the deaths. The NRSA said that many drivers ignored the speed limits and drove recklessly, especially on highways and intercity roads. The NRSA also noted that some drivers used radar detectors to evade police enforcement.

The NRSA launched a campaign in November to raise awareness about the dangers of speeding and to increase the presence of traffic police on the roads. The campaign included billboards, radio spots, and social media posts with the slogan “Slow down, save lives”. The NRSA also urged drivers to use cruise control and speed limiters to prevent excessive speeding.

Distracted driving and alcohol consumption also contribute to accidents

Another major cause of road accidents was distracted driving, which involved the use of mobile phones, navigation systems, or other devices while driving. The NRSA said that distracted driving reduced the driver’s attention and reaction time, and increased the risk of collisions. The NRSA advised drivers to avoid using any devices while driving, and to pull over if they needed to make a call or check a message.

Alcohol consumption was also a significant factor in road accidents, especially during weekends and holidays. The NRSA said that alcohol impaired the driver’s judgment, coordination, and vision, and made them more prone to errors and violations. The NRSA warned drivers not to drink and drive, and to use alternative modes of transportation if they had consumed alcohol. The NRSA also collaborated with the police and the health ministry to conduct random breath tests and blood tests on drivers suspected of driving under the influence.

NRSA calls for more action and cooperation to reduce road fatalities

The NRSA expressed its concern and sorrow over the high number of road fatalities in November, and called for more action and cooperation from all stakeholders to reduce the carnage on the roads. The NRSA said that it was working on several initiatives to improve road safety, such as upgrading the infrastructure, enhancing the education and training of drivers, and implementing new technologies and regulations.
