The American University in Cairo Launches Cybersecurity Program Amid Growing Digital Threats

In a forward-thinking move to address the rising demand for cybersecurity experts, The American University in Cairo (AUC) has launched a new cybersecurity program within its Department of Computer Science and Engineering. This addition aligns with global needs for professionals who can protect digital infrastructure from the increasing number of cyberattacks and security breaches. The program comes as part of AUC’s commitment to adapting its academic offerings to meet the evolving demands of both the local and international job markets.

New Academic Offerings to Meet Market Demands

Professor Sharif Ali, Chair of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, emphasized the program’s relevance to today’s job market. He noted that, alongside the newly launched cybersecurity specialization, AUC had already introduced specializations in embedded systems and artificial intelligence over the past two years. These offerings are designed to prepare graduates for high-quality, competitive jobs across industries that are increasingly reliant on advanced technology.

  • Specializations Offered:
    • Cybersecurity
    • Embedded Systems
    • Artificial Intelligence

Ali pointed out the growing need for cybersecurity professionals in key sectors such as transportation, healthcare, and communications, stressing that the shortage of specialists is becoming a critical issue as the entire digital infrastructure requires safeguarding.

Dual Master’s Program with Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen

In addition to the cybersecurity initiative, AUC has expanded its international academic cooperation by welcoming the first cohort of students in a dual master’s degree program in political science, developed in collaboration with Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen in Germany. This unique program offers students the opportunity to earn a degree accredited in both Germany and the United States.

The program not only enhances academic collaboration between Egypt and Germany but also provides students with rich, cross-cultural experiences. Students will alternate their studies between the two institutions, complete internships, and engage in language studies in both Arabic and German.

  • Program Highlights:
    • Dual degree accredited in both Germany and the U.S.
    • Semester abroad and internships
    • Focus on language studies: Arabic and German

The launch of this program comes after a decade of cooperation between the two universities, strengthening academic and cultural ties between the two countries.

A Step Forward in AUC’s Academic Innovation

The introduction of the cybersecurity program, along with the dual master’s degree, is a clear reflection of AUC’s strategic approach to education. By responding to current and future market needs, AUC is positioning its graduates to thrive in industries that are undergoing rapid digital transformations. This, in turn, will contribute to the global workforce by providing highly trained professionals in critical areas of technology and international relations.

With the rapid development of technology and the ever-increasing threats to digital infrastructure, AUC’s latest initiatives are set to play a key role in shaping the future of Egypt’s—and the world’s—technological landscape.
