Netflix to launch new Saudi comedy series next month

Netflix, the global streaming giant, has announced that it will release a new original comedy series from Saudi Arabia next month. The series, titled AlRawabi School for Girls, is a six-episode show that follows the lives of a group of teenage girls at a prestigious school in Riyadh.

A story of friendship, revenge and empowerment

The series is created and written by Tima Shomali and Shirin Kamal, two female filmmakers from Jordan who have previously worked on successful web series such as FemaleShow and Shankaboot. The show is directed by Shomali, who also stars as one of the main characters.

The plot revolves around a bullied girl who decides to take revenge on her tormentors with the help of her friends. However, she soon realizes that things are not as simple as they seem, and that friendship and loyalty are more important than vengeance.

The show aims to portray the challenges and aspirations of young women in Saudi Arabia, as well as their humor and resilience. Shomali said in a press release: “AlRawabi School for Girls is a show that is very close to my heart, not only because it reflects a lot of personal experiences that myself and my co-writer have been through, but also because it highlights the issues that young girls face in the region through comedy and drama.”

A milestone for Saudi entertainment industry

The series is the second original production from Saudi Arabia by Netflix, after the thriller Whispers, which was released in June 2020. The streaming service has been expanding its presence and content in the Middle East, especially in Saudi Arabia, where it has partnered with local production houses and talent.

The show is also a milestone for the Saudi entertainment industry, which has been undergoing a rapid transformation in recent years. The country has lifted its ban on cinemas, allowed women to drive, and hosted international events such as concerts and sports tournaments. The government has also launched initiatives to support and promote local filmmakers and artists, such as the Saudi Film Festival and the Red Sea International Film Festival.

The series is expected to attract both local and global audiences, as it showcases a different side of Saudi culture and society. Shomali said: “I hope that AlRawabi School for Girls will resonate with audiences worldwide, especially young girls who can relate to these characters and see themselves represented on screen in a powerful way.”

The series will premiere on Netflix on September 12, 2023. The trailer can be watched [here].
